Can somebody explain the whole "backup" concept to me? Do people on here only want 1 or 2 offspring for an animal? I'm just a little confused. :)

People generally only keep one offspring for themselves for continuing their line. There's no inbreeding allowed in the coding, so you can't line breed. People generally only do either one breeding, or they'll do a backup or two for any number of reasons. If there's a market for that breed they may sell them, some people are looking for specific gendered offspring, etc.

Most people only have 2-3 offspring. To keep lines more "sacred" I guess you could call it haha. So if you want to share your lines you can breed backups. Before people would breed a backup incase the final breeding was sterile. We have since removed the steriles from the game, so you don't need to worry about that anymore.Β

So most people will breed at 20 for horses and 15 for dogs. I personally like to breed on Sundays, it's easier to remember plus then my lined animals age with store ones. If I were to sell a foal/pup I would breed at 18 for horses and 13 for dogs.Β

Hope this helps :)

I also do backups just in case I don't get the correct gender I want for a perfect lined pair. ☺

This is such great information! I didn't realize HP got rid of the sterile coding. Glad it's not an option any more. I also didn't realize that they didn't allow inbreeding. This makes it much easier! I was always nervous about accidentally inbreeding my lines. :-P

I only breed backups if the breed is in demand. If it isn't, I wait for people to approach me and ask for a backup at least a few weeks in advance. For example, some of my retired Finnhorses have 2 offspring, and some only have the one foal I kept to continue the lines.

Out of curiosity, how does the game's coding prevent inbreeding? Is there a pop-up notification that says the 2 animals can't be bred together, or something else?
