How Do You Think?

Okay, time for a weird brain-bending discussion!

Joel and I have talked about it before, which promted me to bring it up with mods yesterday, and it was interesting! So now because I'm curious, I'm bringing it here!

So, in the course of a normal day, do you think in images, spoken words, or some other way?

For me, I think almost exclusively in spoken word. I'm contantly having a conversation with myself. For example, if I'm thinking about my plans for dinner my thoughts will go something like this:

"Okay, I need to make dinner, so what do I want to make? There's chicken in the fridge." [flash of image of fridge] "So I should make that, maybe kung pao chicken," [flash of still images from the last time I made kung pao chicken and kung pao brussels sprouts] "Joel thought it was too salty though, so maybe I will add water" [flash of image with water coming from a faucet] "I don't know. But I need to get peanuts out" [flash of peanuts in pantry] "And I'll have to buy soy sauce, so I need to go to the store before 5 so I can start making dinner before Joel gets home" [flash of Joel getting home]

It's like a constant conversation up there. Like I'm talking to myself and narrating my own life. And I do see images, but they're usually flashes of still or mostly still images for a few seconds, and if I'm imagining how something should look I can think in pictures, or like if I'm mentally walking myself through something, like how to get somewhere or what something looked like.

A lot of the time, though, it's just spoken words. Sometimes the flash of image won't have anything to do with what we're even talking about.

If it's a specific memory, I do remember it in images, for whatever that is worth. I'm just talking about every day type of thought patterns here!

Whereas Joel and my sister and a lot of the mods say they think more like a movie clip which is hard for me to imagine!

So, how do you think?

I would say I have a running dialogue going with like occasional background photos or scenes in my mind. Like if I replay a conversation in my head, I hear the words but also see the scene as well. Yeah, the little voice in my head talks about 1,000x more than I ever talk in rl hahaha

Yes! That's a much shorter way to describe how I think too :P. Obviously I talk a lot, haha. Most of the time I can't shut up, especially online.

This is interesting to think about!

I'm a really quiet person but I'm usually always talking to myself, singing a song, or daydreaming in my head.  So for me it would be more spoken words than images.

Usually images! I get in trouble sometimes because I can daydream so vividly and sort of zone out of reality and into my own =P Though if I'm writing something or just occasionally for whatever random reason I'll think in words, but most of the time images.

It helps a lot with making art, but the downside is if I can't get something to look like what it does in my head - it's very frustrating!!

I think like a movie.  Like I vividly see what I'm thinking about but also hear the dialog too.  It's like I'm dreaming all the time I guess? haha

For me, it depends on what I'm thinking. If I'm just planning dinner, I'll look at what we have or what's available in the store and then I'll see images of food that I can make. Lately I'm trying to have grocery lists on hand once I've decided what I'm cooking for the next few days. But if I'm editing a work-related text, I think solely in words. If it was some kind of fictional, creative writing piece, then I guess it would be words and images, if I did write stories lol

I am basically the same as Tron! I was trying to think of a way to put it but she described it perfectly lol

I would say Tron's description is very accurate to mine as well.

This is weird.... I think both probably. I do think in words a lot... but pictures too, it's just almost always accompanied by words... and... I dunno, I never really thought about it before? Lol. I do a lot of art stuff and I'll have the perfect picture of what I want in my head, and the drawing never comes out right! Very frustrating...

As I have a somewhat photographic memory. I think in images.

So like What should I make for dinner. I imagine opening the fridge and going through all the contents. I can tell you whats, in there and on what shelf.

With things like studying, Most people will remember the facts. I will remember that they were written on page 94 for that rainbow coloured text book, the title was in a blue colour there were 3 paragraphs and the information I want is in the 3rd paragraph and I can visualise the whole page and zoom into the information.
