My friend's beautiful deep red 1-year old Saddlebred mare, affectionately named Baby Xena, cast in her stall Wednesday night some time between 10 PM and 6 AM. Everyone that she talks to about it doesn't give her a good prognosis at all. Vet says it's a broken humerus in her front left. I'm hoping for a miracle! But if not, please at least pray for my friend; she's having an even harder time with this than I am. These mares are her family!

Regardless of how this plays out, I'm starting a line of Saddlebreds in honor of Baby Xena and my friend's other Saddlebred mare, Duchess, who she rescued from slaughter and came to her with a broken knee that she didn't know anything about let alone the fact that it wasn't treated properly at the time of occurence over 6 years ago. D is just as sweet as Xena. But D is currently having a custom brace made to help make her more comfortable which hopefully will arrive some time next week.

I hope they can XRay and get a plan of action in place!!

Is the broken knee an actual break or just problematic?  Broken knees even with a brace are ouchies.

Poor ladies!

The knee is broken. She's been in even more pain since last week than she has been previously. But her and the OTTB mare tend to go at each other over the fence all the time too so that definitely isn't helpful.

So unfortunately Z didn't make it. She spiraled quickly late yesterday afternoon to the point that she was eating her own leg. She was euthanized at 5 PM last night. :( But my friend cut some of her tail to create a keepsake. But please pray for my friend. It's the second horse she's had to put down this year but the first that was actually hers. Z was her dream baby horse. She's not doing well. I know you all understand how she's feeling.
