Has anyone ever built their own yard-fence* before? Was it worth it? Did it hold up? How long did it take?

*Sorry, I don't know what else to call it, haha. As in not horse or livestock fencing, but for your backyard.

Our yard isn't fully fenced (needs a fence on one side, and two gates), and I'd love to actually do something about that this year, but we have half an acre (in the city, haha, we got lucky and found a house that was built right where one development met another one and there was not enough space to fit two houses in each space so instead 3 of the houses got HUGE yards!), so having a fencing company do it is probably cost-prohibitive.

Also, I'm thinking we're looking at a 6 foot privacy fence, but it doesn't really matter. The only reason we would want to do that is that is what most of the neighboring houses have that have a shared side with our yard have, so it would match. Kind of. Because they're not even all the same color.

And asking our neighbor, who's yard would also end up being fully fenced if we put a fence down that one side, isn't an option because they won't even wave back at me, let alone talk to me. So.

That is my yard! So the left side has privacy fencing, the back has a different privacy fence on half and chain link on the other half, and then the right side is what we're needing fenced, haha. If that helps shed some light on the situation and why I don't really care about the type of fencing :P.

They are called privacy fences 😉

Not hard to do, especially if you have a air compressor nail gun

rent a ditch witch one day to do your fence posts

DONT set in concrete, they never drain right and end up rotting the wood. Or if you do, do half dirt half concrete fill

make sure your boundaries are set prior to doing above

watch YouTube. We are going to be doing the entire yard this summer supposedly

Make sure to check with the county where exactly your property lines are and if there are any easments.  Other than that I've never personally built a wooden fence so I don't have a lot of pointers. The only fencing I've built has been metal and wire with posts in concrete.

I'd go with a privacy fence. We have a chainlink here and I hate it especially with our neighbors' fence charging agressive turds for dogs.
I haven't done anything with wood, but I've also done the t-post & wire set up before. I also helped put up this vinyl fence and it was a ginormous pain in the butt.
I'd suggest getting pre-treated wood so it'll last longer, a tad more expensive, but worth it from what others have told me. You're lucky your yard is mostly flat so keeping your fencline level wouldn't be too much of an issue. Best of luck!

The boundary lines still have survey stakes in them so we're good there :).

We DO have an easement on the yard to get to the utility boxes, but so does everyone else. The boxes are actually on our neighbor's property, but they built their fence around them so you have to use our yard to get to them. Buuttt that's not our problem, that's their problem. Also, the fence probably wouldn't be locked anyway so they could still just walk back there if they need to.
