so I'm getting a horse soon! :)))

I'm going to be paying for it myself so I did have a few questions about what you guys pay out to own a horse.

how much do you guys spend per month on grain?
what about hay?
miscellaneous costs?

I want to make sure it's feasible that I'm able to pay for it myself before I commit fully.

thank you! :)

Hi, friend ^^I'm assuming that you'll be keeping your horse on your own property? (Since you're talking about grain/hay costs). I board my jumper, but I'll leave the costs below anyway.Necessities--Board is $630 a monthHis meds are $68 a monthHis feet are $200 every six weeks (I use an expensive farrier...changing that soon x.x)His wormer is $50 every three monthsNon-necessities-Lessons are $200-350 every monthI pay probably about $100 on new/replacement/repairs for tack every monthA little bonus-My horse is allergic to vaccines, so I get a break on that every six months xDLet me know if I forgot anything xD

Thank you! :) I'll be keeping it at my house, so I won't need to pay board like that or anything. Omg $200 for farrier? :/ That's just insane! Lol I think when I had a horse (which was like 5 years ago) it was around $50 for the farrier to come to my house and for the shoes as well... it was pretty cheap but there's not a lot of people who keep shoes on their horses around here. I wonder how much hay and grain costs? I didn't buy it for my last horse so I do not recall how much was spent...

I know, right? The farrier I used for my filly (and who I will hopefully be switching back to) charged $50 for a trim. Shoes will naturally be more, but I highly doubt it will be as high as $200.I do know that hay has recently gone up (at least in my area) because the past few seasons have been so dry.

I have someone here that has hay for $3 per square bale. I know they eat at least a few values a week... the horse I'm looking at is a 17 hh thoroughbred gelding so I expect it to eat a little more than another horse.haha I'm just so excited! I miss having horses so bad!

Hi! So happy for you that you are getting a horse!! $3 per square bale is insanely cheap (at least compared to what I'm use to paying) so I'd jump on that real fast! I currently have three horses and a mini donkey and they are all kinda fat and eat a bunch. All of them eat Select from Southern States grain and the horses get almost 2 scoops twice a day and the donkey gets 1 twice a day (like I said they are fat and spoiled) I normally get five-six bags of feed per week just to make sure I always have enough (especially during the colder months) and that runs around $60 a week. They also get a bunch of hay because we don't have a lot of grass right now but we buy that in bulk so I can price it exactly. Your vet bills will really depend on your vet and horse. Its a lot cheaper if you can trailer your horse and take him/her to the vet because vets charge an arm and a leg for farm visits! Not too sure where farrier bills run now a days because we shoe our own horses (a great thing to learn) Hope this helped!!! -Appy

I have 3 1/2 horses.. I have them on my property. feed is about 800 a month. my farrier lives across the street from me, and I only get the front feed done, so its 40 bucks a horse. and for all the meds and what not that I need I always go to the local vet supplies store for shots, dewormer. etc. so that usually cost the price of the object.around here, I think its about 17-20 bucks a bale, bag of whatever. you can always shop around and find the best price and quality in town.

I ended up getting hay for $3 a bale :) feed is $25 for 100 pounds here. It's definitely a LOT less for me to feed it seems like.

Hey! I have horses at home and I thought I'd throw my two cents in for you for long term costs:You need to worm them every 2 months, rotating out the kind of wormer each year so they don't build an immunity - it's about $15 a tube.Hay here because of the drought is close to $20/bale for the good stuff, but in luckier areas or better crop years it can be found for $2-$5/bail.Grain is between $15-$20 per 50 lb bag at tractor supply and you'll need a new one once a month or so if you only have one horse.Shots are about $200 per year if we have the vet do them (usually we give our own shots). And our farrier comes to us and is $75 every 6 weeks for two horses.I think that's really it.
