Alot of you know me from chat, and alot of you have messaged me for advice, so I thought it would be cool to sort of lead a guides discussion here about horses and their care. Of course you can always chime in with your questions and I'll answer ;-)

The first subject on my mind right now is "How much is too much?" This can have many meaning to many different horse people so let me explain.

I recently got a rescue horse who was a walking bag of bones with HORRID feet. Every day I go out there, twice when I feed, and pick, soak, and dress her feet. A friend of mine(More on her later on the topic) says I do too much to my horses, and horses that high maintenance aren't worth having.

I go out and brush all my horses every day to stimulate the oils in their coat, and get that unsightly dirt off... I'm very vain when it comes to my furbabies. I don't ride all the time due to my recent physical health, but I make sure each horse gets individual attention an a daily basis.

I know every new crack in those hooves, I know every new spot, cut and scrape on their body. People say I do too much. I say I don't do enough.

I take on lost causes because I can afford them. I know many of us don't have 60k for a new horse. I make sure to get great stock that needs nursing. All my horses, short of my Stallion and Filly, were FREE (and I got conformation temperament and bloodlines. Yes my free horses have papers.). One was a Chronic rearer and failed wp horse, One is an injured ottb, One was a skinny hard keeper who had been neglected, and the last, she's a neglected track pony who a farrier did no favors. With my track record with what I bring home, Its no wonder I'm anal with them all.

I feel I don't give them the time they deserve and feel bad at times I profit off of them via lessons, foals, shows and onsite leases.(No More Off Site leases for me).

Now, just for contrast. I leased my older been there done that mare to a friend. She promised to care for her how I would. Little did I know that ment turning her out in a field, not graining, and riding the you know what out of her. She's the exact opposite of me. I learned, if a horse comes up lame, it leaves. Prime example is her horse who need attention on her hind legs. (I personally believe she's suffered a mechanical founder) This girl just leaves her in the field when that mare needs soaked/cold hosed for swelling, maybe a epson salt soak. BUT she can't be bothered to even pick the horses feet. All her horses are ribby and my mare came back in not so good condition (I went and got her as soon as I saw) This girl beileves that horses are not happy unless they are being ridden, but at the same moment says they live wild, they don't need their feet picked out, they dont need hay or grain.

Now with these two, I'd say extremes in mind, I want to see what comes to your mind. Think about both people and both ways. I want to know what you feel is too much, too little or even what is just right. Add in what you do with your horses. Tell me I'm an overbearing horse mommy ;-)
