So I'm not even sure how to word this in a way that makes sense, but I'll do my very best.

Background to the question: I am interested in a retirement breeding of my Norwegian Elkhound Line.

I want to use one of my 12th generation females - https://horsephenomena.com/dogs.php?id=86946.

I'd like to breed her to my 1st generation male - https://horsephenomena.com/dogs.php?id=63600.

The problem is that the 1st generation male is the great great grandpa (7 generations back) of the 12th generation female.

At what point is an animal considered to be "inbred" on HP?

I know that in RL, as long as there is plenty of seperation through mamy generations than it is not an issue at all.

At what point do you consider the inbreeding to devalue the animal?

Is there a certain timeframe, or number of generations, you'd like to see in order for the inbreeding to not devalue the animal?

*For example, I do not agree with inbreeding animals in which they share a relative within 1-4 generations. However, I feel that if there is at least 5 generations separating the "inbreeding", then it doesn't impact the value.

What are your thoughts on this?

Well, this is a personal question I guess, but this is my opinion.

I don't like to inbreed.
I retirement bred a mare out of some really good lines, and discovered that in the way back of those there was a same father or mother. I deleted the horse, and retirement bred another 1 instead. This was a stallion, so I changed the gender. I am just obsessed with clean and pure lines. I also avoid retiring animals , and therefore have 2000 of them on the retirement.
I'd be devastated if Ididn't check the lines too well, and after a while figured out that there was a inbreeding. I'd delete the animal for that.

But thats just me.

I'm also completely against inbreeding on here. Personal choice. You could always train a new store male to retirement, then do a retirement breeding with the chosen female.

I can understand why you would want to pair those two, so that you have impressive starting points AND a high gen, but I agree with the others that I am unfavorable of inbreeding on this game. It's just so common that most animals have only one mate, and that lines are kept clean.

I played another game where points, color, and conformation determined the value of the horse, and after 4ish generations we tolerated inbreeding to keep the conformation and colors of certain lines how we wanted them, but I felt dirty even doing that lol.

You could use a diffrent female like https://horsephenomena.com/dogs.php?id=65923 and breed to the 12th gen to keep the generation and easily train the offspring higher than 3mil with privates!

oop I just noticed both the links you posted are males

If it's so far back I personally do not see an issue. I am in the process of recreating my Thoroughbreds actual pedigree and we all know they have inbreeding. One stallion is bred to two separate mares in the first generation, I won't technically have inbreeding in this case but the same names will show up couple times if you look far enough back.

It's down to personal preference.

In my opinion, what makes it bad is that it's an online game with literally an infinite number of animals. You can totally just pop a new one into existence at any time. In real life you breed for traits. Since we only breed for points, and you can get that on any animal, we can be choosier than in real life. Each animal CAN have an "ideal" mate, there's no need for in-breeding.

Personally I don't see an issue with inbreeding once it's 4-5 generations past. It happens IRL, so it isn't somehow unrealistic. Yeah it "looks pretty" to have lines that are completely diverse and "pure," but it's not exactly true to life. It's a personal choice though so I'd say go with your gut. :)

In order to even see the inbreeding that far back people would need to go through the whole pedigree, I personally only look at the first page of a pedigree if buying outside lines.

Like Maha said, if you're keeping for yourself then it probably doensn't truly matter anyways. If I were a breeder of that breed and looking to buy if I didn't see the inbreeding on the first page of the pedigree I wouldn't care.

I am also not a fan of inbreeding and will avoid it where I can.  The reason for this is I want to keep my lines as valuable as possible because there could come a day when I will *maybe* want to sell some lines to the public.  However, if they are your private lines and you never plan on selling them to the public, then inbreeding them, as Maha said, should not matter.

It will all come down to your preference and your long term outlook and goals for your animals :)

I believe HP has a code to prevent inbreeding, but only on the first three generations (which is the parts of the pedigree we can see). I don't like it on the game, and I have a LOT of isues with it within the TB and AQH worlds in real life, primarily because some TB pedigrees look like rainbows they have so much inbreeding which absolutely can cause to massive health issues, including weaker bone structure and all that.

On the game I think that it's so easy to avoid, you should when possible. Mistakes happen but that's just for my lines. If you're not ever planning on selling those lines it really doesn't matter what anyone else says or thinks.

I have no opinion on the actual inbreeding, but for what it's worth, HP will stop you from inbreeding through great grandparents, I believe.

Thanks for the clarification Sam! I knew the game had some sort of system in place.

Thanks everyone for your input. I do not have any current plans of selling the lines, but I am open to selling some in the future. I do not believe there are any active breeders so it is not really an issue right now.

That being said, I'm not a fan of inbreeding either (and I have never done it on here) but I was curious since the idea popped into my head.

After some research I have found the pair that I will be breeding.

4th generation - https://horsephenomena.com/dogs.php?id=63114 - Highest Pointed of the breed (5.4 mill)

5th generation - https://horsephenomena.com/dogs.php?id=85115 - from a different line (2.1 mill)

I'm excited to revive these lines. Thank you everyone for your input!

I'm also against it . My old Malamute lines had an inbreed from a twin i somehow missed and i let the whole line go i pretty sure it was like 7-8 generations in i was devestated ... i learned i need to be more vigilent on who i breed with who
