How do you choose a breed?

I'm curious about how people decide to breed this or that type of horse or dog on here. Obviously your main is your favorite, I'm guessing? And then what about extra breeds? Is it just your faves or will you factor in other aspects, like popularity? Are you likely to buy a backup from other people's lines to start a new breed? |

When I first joined HP I kind of cruised around chat and watched other players, saw what they bred. I wanted a dog breed, and something not too popular. Everything else I've gotten has either just been people talking about the breed in chat, or I just happened to come across it and went "ooh that sounds fun" |

I always choose my dog breeds off of dogs that come into my work (I work at a veterinary hospital), dogs that have impacted me over multiple occasions, etc. I go off of the temperment of the breed irl and put that into what I want to breed into the game. Horse breeds I choose off of what appeals to me the most and what I would like to own if I had the ability to do so. |

I started Paints because I'd never done them before on HL and I wanted to try out a more "popular" or "challenging" breed rather than picking a niche one with few or no breeders active. I added Cleveland Bays because they were my favorite on HL in the day, then added Oldenburgs purely because S.pace was selling her entire set. I added Pembroke Corgis because I love the breed irl and then expanded into Cardigan Corgis because of the Regina pup being available. ;) I plan on starting French Bulldogs soon because they're my IRL favorite breed (and a breed I hope to own in the near future IRL!) |

I started off with New Forests, Highlands and GSDs as they are my favourite breeds plus I have at least one of each in RL. The ACDs came along because I was looking for a breed and Siib dangled them in front of me :D Zombie Paints because they're kewl. Arabs because I love them. SEAs because they're popular. AQH because they're popular so can sell backups. DW because they were for sale. Welsh ponies because the plan was to do all 9 British Natives but I appear to have deviated from them. |

MFT's - I started them in honor of my friend who originally introduced me to HL. She bred MFT's on HL and I picked them up here and 18 generation later...here I am. Palominos - I started cuz they're one of my favorite horse colorings - even tho they're not technically a breed shhh Australian Shepherds - cuz they're peeeertty Siberian Huskies - cuz I own a Hoosker Bernese Mountain Dogs - my FAVORITE dog breed!!! ♥ Dobermans - another breed I love and hope to own someday Pintaloosas - cuz they're peeeertty and I wanted to breed Paints but also didn't cuz everyone else does and there's no challenge for me with them. :P Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs - also peeeertty Flametas - cuz they cool. also peeeertty. FIRE! Alaskan Malamutes - another, bigger floofer Norwegian Fjords - because they're peeeertty and I also love Norway and I'm 50% Norwegian. ♥ of all the peeeertty horses, I want one of these the mostest.

I typically go with breeds that mean something to me in real life. |

This time around, I wanted to give breeding non-rare breeds a try so I tried to pick breeds that had a moderate amount of breeders. I'm only on the first gen though so we'll see if I can stick with them, I did revive one of my rare breeds though but it's only cause it's my main project lines. |

I only have one breed, Lhasa Apsos. I've personally owned two of them and both have been very special to me. I bred Aussies in the past, mostly because they're pretty looking, ha. I've never done horses on HP, but if I did it would probably be Andys or Warlanders. |

I like the rare ones, but also the ones that I have a personal connection to. My Spanish Anglo Arabs I picked randomly. I wanted something that needed a revitalization. When I came back I picked them back up. My Dutch Shepherds happen to be rare but I chose them because my RL dog was a Dutchie mix. |

I tend to really stick with the rare breeds since those last longer with me. Every time I start a new breed I go through all the horses and dogs and make a list of which have little to no breeders then I typically pick from that list I bred 5 generations of rat terriers purely because I was the only breeder My Florida Cracker horses are special because I'm a Floridian and I just love that connection |

I've started and stopped playing HP a few times, usually the breed I'd start was something I kinda liked or thought was cool at the time. Currently I'm on Unicorns, which I love. I started Marwaris - they're my second favorite breed, but lost motivation. Arabians aren't a breed I particularly like but their crosses are kinda nice, but I don't wanna do them anymore either! So next up is my all-time favorite, Akhal-Tekes, which I think will stick. So, I usually choose breeds I think are kinda cool at the time, but the only ones to last are ones I absolutely love :P |

Well I sort of have a problem and just start every breed that I fancy hahaha (see my page...) I obiously love drafts so I have a bunch of them, but a ton of other breeds that I like too, either based on working with them, the disciplines they generally train in, or just the way they look. I also like having ones on here that I'd love to have in real life but never could (I mean, really that's all of them, but an example would be some rare breeds like Train du Nords) |

We've had loaves in the family for years (I've not owned one personally, but family members have). My best friend also owned a loaf who was sadly put to sleep last month, but he was such a character and such a beautiful dog. I just love the breed! I also breed Irish Draughts, and I chose this breed because when I do eventually get back in the saddle, I'll be getting an Irish Draught. Perfect for fence hopping over the countryside and XC/SJ alike. |

Well, my favorite breed (Georgian Grande) is actually not my main... I do adore Knabs, they're my second fave, and I started them before I started Georgian Grandes. I had a big project and then I decided I wanted to have a gorgeous multi-miller line with every gen achieving.. multi-million points lol. So I'm sticking with Knabs. Plus, Knabs are a more popular breed than Georgian Grandes so that's a draw for me. My other breeds have literally just been my favorites, and then random breeds that just snag my interest. For example, I started breeding the only active line of Neapolitan Mastiffs after watching Harry Potter and wondering what kind of breed Fang was (in the movies.. in the book, he was a kind of boar-hound). I started Imperial Sport Horses because the name is elegant and fantastic (and the coloring is drool-worthy). Suffolk Punches are precious to me because of the breed's real-life history/struggle. I started Weims, Zombie Paints, and Belgian Warmbloods because they were popular and I love to latch onto some popular breeds (just as much as I love being the only breeder of some rare breeds lol). |

bwahaha yes I'm gonna have to add Imperial Sport Horses to my list soon too, for the appearance alone! |
