Hey all, sorry for this, but I was wondering what you all thought about the foal pointage system. I myself put more effort into the stallions with tickets and shows, etc. (See Smoke Rings in the Dark). That's kind of the way, from what I've seen in drafts for our shows, that we look for breedings, etc. It's a stud fee for a reason, as you're wanting to breed to the stud, not the other way around. Course it does go both ways I suppose, I think the percentage points for a foal should either a) Be the same for mares and stallions, or there should be point priority for the stallion and not the mare. Thoughts? If I make no sense, let me know, or ignore. lol. ~Chip |

I do agree that it's odd that the majority of points are passed from the mare, not the stallion. I always thought that it would be the most from the stud. That's at least the way I thought it was until I heard other players talking about it in chat... |

I agree--before I knew more points came from the mares, I always put more effort into stallions. I come from a TB background, and you have whatever mares you have and look for the best stallions. |

I understand where you're coming from and your train of thought on this. However, there is actually a reason behind it.The reason more points come form the mare is because that way mares are actually worth something on the game, since so many games are stallion focused and mares really aren't worth much of anything since they can't be put up for breedings as easily and like that. And also because actually, if you think about it in terms of realism, more of a real-life foal's success in it's life DOES come from the mare (she carries it, brings it up, etc.) whereas the stallions responsibility stops at breeding, so it would make sense for more points to come from the mare on the game. Since the healthier and better off a mare, the better of the foal will probably be.Either way, the point difference that they gain from the dam versus sire is negligible (It's only a 1% difference. For those that don't know the breeding formula it's 4% of the mares points + 3% of the stallion's points. It's the same for dogs.) so you probably wouldn't even notice much of a difference if it were changed. |

Thanks for putting that into perspective, Sam! |

Here's an example, showing the actual numbers that it would be. So imagine that you had a very typical breeding scenario; one parent (in this case we'll say the mare) had 1,100,000 points, and one parent (in this case we'll say the stallion) had 1,150,000 points. In which case your foal points would look like this:Current Formula: 78,500 points at birth.Swapped Formula (giving priority to the stallion): 79,000 points at birth.Equal Points from Both Parents: 78,750 points at birth. As you can see, the difference in points is next to nothing. Even if you give one parent preference when training, the points still are not that different. Since you said you mostly give stallions preference, I did the points that way in the next example, but you could apply the math giving the mares preference just as easily:Imagine you have a stallion with exactly 1,400,000 points and a mare with exactly 1,000,000 points.Current: 82,000 points at birth.Swapped: 86,000 points at birth.Equal: 84,000 points at birth. And finally, imagine you did a project pair, and you gave a significant preference to the male, so he was bred at 5,000,000 points, but you only trained the mare to 3,000,000 points. This would give you the following numbers:Current: 270,000 points at birth.Swapped: 290,000 points at birth.Equal: 280,000 points at birth. In all of these examples, I gave the stallion a point preference over the mare, but in reality, the stallion is not always pointed higher than the mare, some people train their mares higher on purpose and sometimes it just happens that way. So in these examples where there is a CLEAR preference for the stallion, the point differences are still not that much, which means that in a "real life scenario" where the stallion may or may not be higher pointed than the mare, the average foal points would probably not change at all if we were to change the breeding formula.Plus, for the reasons started in my last post, there are other reasons it is the way it is. I just wanted to actually do the math. |

(I'd love to see a "lease a mare" system put in place, so you can get a foal from someone else's mare as easily as you can from their stallion, but obviously there are other things that need to be done on HP first. :P ) |

*agrees with Adranth*It would make it easier when people ask me if they can borrow a breeding from a mare to one of their lonely stallions... |

broodmares (what adranth said "lease a mare") would be awesome! I know a couple people that actually do that in real life here in vegas. There mares are open for breedings lol so its the other way around then breeding with a stallion and then you wait to get your foal after its born. |
