You find yourself alone on a street lined on each side by adjoining industrial garages without windows. Their solid doors are all closed, and windy twilight is setting in. The hair on the back of your neck begins to stand up as you realize this is the same setting as in a most upsetting dream you’d once had, in which you’d thrown rocks at a defenseless black dog as he whimpered and tried to escape you, but there were no lanes he could duck into. You had awoken in a cold sweat, horrified that you could do such a cruel thing, even in a dream!

But now, you wish you were dreaming this time, as the same dog materializes ahead of you. Except now, he has grown into a large, strong wolf. As he snarles at you, red rays gleam from his eyes and begin to burn into your skin. So you turn, and see an angel beckoning at the other end of the street. You race for the angel gliding toward you, hoping against hope you will reach safety before the wolf reaches you, but you hear him getting closer, and his eyes burn deeper into your back.

In what seems a panicked eternity, you do reach the angel, but as his wings close around you, you see red begin to glow from his eyes. As the wolf leaps into the angel, they become one, to encompass you, and you realize...

this time you were the one with no escape.

The floorboards creaked and groaned under her weight as she slowing made her way across the rundown porch. Stopping, she eased her hand towards the ajar door, and with a creak it eased open. Hesitating, she looked up at the full moon that drifted in and out of the dark clouds casting shadows across the yard as the crisp wind whistled through the dead trees that seemed to reach with claw-like limbs as if to grab her. An owl hooted somewhere off in the distance. Goosebumps littered her expose arms making her wish she thought to wear a jacket.

Slowly walking through the doorway she glanced around at the shadows and spider webs clinging to every corner and surface, Amanda shivered but moved further into the dark room with boarded up windows. Hearing a noise to her left she spun in that direction only to see a large rat scurrying into a hole in the wall. Breathing a sigh of relief, Amanda turned back around just as a skeletal hand clamped strongly onto her shoulder.

Screaming she scrambled away from the hand and spun around to find no one there. The eerily quietness of the house started to frighten her. Then out of the corner of her eye she saw a shadow move. With a gasp she whipped her head in that direction. Finding nothing she glanced around again. Still nothing. But then, in the corner a dark shape rose up, a skeleton hand reaching towards her. With a blood-curdling scream she fled from the house into the darkness.

“Lisa, are you daydreaming again?” Jeremy’s voice snapped Lisa back to reality. Lifting her head up she looked him over. As usual the man was drop dead gorgeous from the glow of his aqua blue eyes to the toes of his Justin boots. Everything in between was a bonus.

Lisa rolled her eyes in an attempt to play it cool. “Daydreaming is better than being here anytime” It really was. It was Halloween day and she was stuck at school decorating for the haunted house. She only agreed to it because Jeremy was running the show. She watched as his lifted his white cowboy hat and ran his hand through his thick black hair. Something she dreamt of doing for the past two years.

“Well Lisa I need you to help me in the back with some of the decorations. I have everyone else in the halls rigging the lockers to fly open.” Jeremy spoke in a voice that was both soft and in a way demanding but the crooked smile he gave her always chased away any doubts she had about him. She stood from her desk and began following Jeremy to the back room.

Further and further they walked until before she knew it they had descended the stairs to the schools boiler room. A chill raced up her spine forcing her to cringe and wrap her arms around herself in hopes or eradicating the creeping cold. “why are we down here? Didn’t we put the boxes in the science room?” she turned around to look at Jeremy only to find he was no longer there.

Heavy arms wrapped around her from behind as she felt a sharp pain in her neck. Too stunned to scream she said nothing.  Too paralyzed by fear she didn’t move until the grip loosened and she was turned around to face Jeremy whose eyes glowed in the darkness and his smile flashed revealing two long canines that she realized were fangs. “Welcome to my world Lisa” were the only things she heard before everything went black…….

She rode through the forest. From what, she did not know. She only felt an immesurably evil force advancing upon her. As she nudged her horse faster, out of the corner of her eye she saw dozens of glowing gold eyes. In terror, she turned and kicked her horse harder until he was drenched in sweat.

Remember

We are Fear

Suddenly, she was thrown from her saddle, as her horse dropped dead to the ground. The eyes grew brighter as they realized what happened. She looked to her horse in sorrow, and with tears in her eyes and terror in her heart, she stumbled up and started to run away.

All around her, she could see the golden eyes moving around her while they formed a circle around the horrified girl. As she slowed, she noticed that they were hulking dogs, as large as a man and made of a dull gold that shone just as much as it dimmed in the shadows.

Timeo

"Why do I hear words of a dead language, unless you are things of death?" she accused as they haunched and glowed.

Fortes fortuna juvat. The dogs shimmered in cruel humor

Unfortunately, your bravery won't help you here, for we are the Kings of Kings

It was then that she realized, but it was far too late.

I was riding the waves on my surfboard without a care in the world, when I heard huge rumbling like a monster wave larger than I’d ever encountered.  As it curled over me, I saw it was gelatinous and thick with translucent pastel sparkles, then there was blackness.

I became aware that I was awakening, but could not see in the pitch blackness. I could feel oozy goo all around my body, even over my mouth and nose. I realized suddenly that I was not breathing, nor did I need to.  I could move my arms and legs in the goo, very slowly, but freely, and my feet were not on the ground, although I was upright.

Suddenly light blazed instantaneously throughout. Though gel completely enclosed my eyes and ears, I could hear strange squealing sounds. I was looking through pristine clear glass at other people in various sports outfits.  Each was in separate glass cylinders suspended stationary in their own spot of air,  shifting in slow motion in their perfectly clear gel.

Alarmingly, I saw brightly colored translucent octopus-like creatures floating around us, large and small in family-like groups. As they touched the button on my jar, a moving 3-d image of me surfing in my new bikini played for them. My neighbour’s button played a dancing image of her in the same tutu she was forever preserved in.

In horror, I realized this alien zoo would also be my eternity, but I could only scream on the inside.

The night my father died I was so frightened.   My heart hammered in my chest like a mad wild thing trying to break through the cage of flesh and bone.  He was very old when he got the challenge    Two dark shadows reared against the sky brothers unholy unheard of twins who almost killed their dam upon entering the world.   Their hooves tore at his chest and sides battering like iron fists. Blood streamed from rents in the skin on his neck and shoulders.    He ran for the shadows of the cool dark woods no peace to be found.  The wraith wolves tore the meat from his noble bones his screams were silenced in a watery gurgle of his last breath.    True carnage reigned in the herd.  The brothers flailed at my aunts and mother killing foals still nursing .  Sweet grasses coverd with slimey gore.  The evil brothers gathered my mother and aunts and drove them onward.  I was overlooked frozen in the bushes.  The wolves sated by blood and glory paid me no attention to small form shivering in the bushes.  I was small barely weaned outcast.  Not accepted by the bachelor bands I was unwanted grazing in the fringe scrub area alone and unprotected.  A flame burned inside me.  I ran and turned until my lungs burst:  flailed and screamed at the sky.  White in the shadows of winter like my sire I would grow strong.   Thunder would answer when I reared and screamed my battle cry at the sky.

The white femmine had entered a world she never thought existed, she heard so many stories. Looking down her paws were almost real, except she had a white glow to her. And she whimpered slightly a bit scared. Sniffing the air it seemed so clean. She realized as soon as she spotted her rock with her own body on it, she then knew that she wasn't in the world anymore. Sighing softly, massive paws filled the roof of hell itself. Appendages carried her throughout the woods as she moved swiftly. She had this sudden anger and she let out a bark, but then she calmed and she was frightened by herself. Polar had been dead for quite sometime, but she had yet to awake. Walking slowly over to the river she had once played in, she looked at herself, she was still the same. Her mind spoke to her When you look at me, tell me what you see. She laid there for quite sometime. Her stare was still. Her fur was still overwhelmed by Blaze. She belonged to him, but her memories were gone. And she felt no trace of love, she felt pretty cold. Standing up again she moved under a tree, and soon laid down and fell asleep, but all she could see was the dark side of her, barking and growling at her. Maybe this was just a start of nightmares.

The next morning the sun seemed to shine down on her, but she didn't feel the heat, instead she felt cold. A shiver was sent through her, it seemed to creep through her fur, Polar as usual stood up and shook the dust that made her pelt look a grey color. She felt a knawing feeling at her, like she wanted to explode with rage. Appendages took this female over to the water, she saw what was inside her, it wasn't nice, nor herself. It seemed to be a demon, she backed slowly away from the water concerned. And closed her eyes, flash backs are all she saw. Then her old self let go. Polar was no longer there, but her deep enternal self took her place. She laughed demonicly and went around killing everything in sight. Her eyes where not a crystal blue, but a rather deep dark blood red. Her pelt was now a red color. This wasn't the way Polar had planned, somehwere beneath that demon she was screaming, but it always seemed to force her back. The demon spoke You don't have control... I do.. and I will make your life a living hell. The demon seemed to chuckle, and she growled at it. Forcing herself to come back. She felt a shrilling pain shoot through her, and her body collasped.

When the next few hours passed, she tried to stand up but her legs were so numb she couldn't stand, she yelped and pleaded for the demon to let go of her body. Again it forced it's way through her, and this continued the next few mintues, before the demon retracted. Polar knew she wouldn't ever be able to look at herself in the water ever again, for the fear of seeing the dark side of her. From now on she would walk with shame.

“Good night, Colette,” my mom said as she pulled the blankets up, tucking me into bed.

“Night, mom,” I yawned.

She kissed my forehead, and walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her, leaving me in darkness. I rolled over to my other side and closed my eyes, slowly drifting away into sleep.

I was jolted awake by a noise. My eyes opened wide and I tensed, waiting. Had I imagined it? Then again, claws on wood. I slowly sat up in bed, looking around my room in the almost perfect darkness.  Then a rattling noise broke the silence, and my head turned, trying to find the source of the sound. Another rattle and I knew. It was my closet door handle. Something was making it move.

There was something in my closet.

I pulled the blankets up over my head and sat in the darkness trembling. It was going to get me this time, I knew it. I squeezed my eyes shut as tightly as I could, my hands curling into small fists.

“Please, please, please….” I moaned softly, the litany repeating over and over.

A muffled thump, as something moved outside of my tent of blankets. I stopped repeating the words to myself and whimpered.

Something tapped on my blankets, and I screamed.

What I found in the attic on Halloween night didn't surprise me so much as entertain me. I knew my mom used to dabble with the paranormal from late nights of farfetched ghost stories and what I thought to be silly superstitions.  But a ouija board?  Really?

I'd been scouring through boxes for my Freddy Krueger mask to scare the trick-or-treaters when I found it. It was older, at least mid-century, and covered in a layer of dust. But, despite age and an attic mouse problem, it was still in good shape.  Which is why, an hour later, I sat cross-legged on the aged wooden floors surrounded by lit white candles ("White attracts only good spirits," my mom had told me many times) with my fingers gently placed upon the plastic planchette.

Although a non-believer, I felt compelled to give it a try. Maybe it was curiosity, or maybe it was some kind of subconscious reconciliation for the past since me and my dad had rolled our eyes at my mom's stories right up until the day she disappeared a year ago.  Who knows.  Either way, when the planchette began to glide effortlessly across the board, a spark of fear rose along with a myriad of goosebumps.

R O S E B U S H

My heart hammered mercilessly against my ribcage.  Rosebush?  I thought of my mom, grinning at me from across the yard as her gloved hands tended to her beloved roses.

"Mom?" I heard myself whimper.

R O S E B U S H

The planchette began to move faster, flying across the board in unintelligible shapes and patterns.  The candles' flames flickered rapidly.  I let go, breathing hard, and ran.

Straight downstairs and into the backyard.

I went to the rosebush, dead now, and would've acknowledged it as the second piece of irony of the night had I not noticed the one patch of oddly shaded earth to the right.  Something told me to dig and so I began to do so, with my fingers, not caring about the dirt or the bugs, until I hit something solid.

And white.

A skull.  There was a huge gauge in it, splitting the flat of bone into two jagged edges.

Dead leaves crunched behind me.  I whirled, my breath caught in my throat, blood pumping adrenaline to my racing heart, to find my dad hovering over me with the ax that I recognized from the outdoor shed.

His lips curled into a wicked smile.

"I see you found your mother."
