What do you do to help your horse specially when its bad during the seasons summer into fall? Any tips? My mare got it bad and dropped weight quick and I feel like no one can give me a real good answer on them on what to do help them. The best thing I read so far was NRF2 and she been on them before and it did help with over all general heath when I first got her a year ago and then I got broke so had to stop buying them now I wish I didnt! I just started her back on them today! I hope they help! Specially so I can give people that are in the same spot as me and give them my suggestion what help my mare! |

There is a horse at the barn that has heaves and I've noticed that when they think he is about to flare up they put him in an area by himself and he does get supplements year round. Next time I go back I'll have to ask them for some advice to pass on to you. |

Make sure to soak the hay so there is no dust on there and make sure to keep the spaces large and open. Because clean air is imporant for them, at least that's what I remember. My friend was trying to rescue a mare who had a foal with that and the mare had to be put down and the foal was taken to a nurse mare because of the mare's condition had gone down hill fast. |

My mare back home (Kiera) has heaves and was really struggling there for a while because she caught strangles at the same time, but she's been doing much better lately. We also have a second horse in our barn with heaves (Skippy). Both get year-round supplements and plenty of open space, and we soak their hay before feeding. I have noticed that when we first saw signs that Kiera had heaves it got bad quickly and for a long stretch of time (a couple of years, but I'm sure that was dragged out by the bout of strangles between) but then suddenly got much better without much change in her care. She has more energy and hardly coughs anymore, much more like her old self. Not sure if the supplements we're using work long term or if it's a fluke. Skippy just recently started showing signs of heaves and we are still struggling with her coughing and keeping her comfortable. Her stall and pasture are separate from the others, so I suppose we'll find out if that makes a difference. Best of luck! It was hard for me to see my girl struggle through it and I wish you the best! |
