The name for the embassy is Koutei Inu, which is Japanese for "Emperor Dog" - inspired by both the temperment and history of this wonderful breed. After being established on the northern island of Honshu, the Akita dog was owned only by the Japanese emperor and royal court. Over time, the breed became available to the common people and is a treasure in Japan. There, the Akita is honored for its loyalty, bravery, and regal bearing. Families with newborns are often gifted Akita statues as a wish for happiness and long life. For all these reasons and more, the Akita is truly an Emperor Dog - and deserves an embassy that declares as much!

The Akita is a working class spitz-type dog that stands an average of 2 feet high at the shoulder. They have a thick coat that comes in many colors, including pinto, brindles, masks, and urajiro (the shiba-inu coloring pattern). The Akita breed has been divided into 2 types - American Akita and Japanese Akita. The American Akita is usually bigger and built thicker, whereas the Japanese Akita is slimmer and has stricter restrictions on coloring.

When it comes to temperment, the Akita is an intelligent, loyal, and independent breed - which can lead to strongly protective behaviors. They need to be firmly trained and heavily socialized as puppies to keep behavior issues to a minimum. As natural guardians, they can be aggressive towards other dogs, but are very eager to please their owners and show off a very playful and silly side when with their family.
