This is the mascot backstories thread! Please post your mascot's backstory here once it's completed. There is no length requirement and you do not have to write it yourself (although, it must be original work, so no copy/pasting from somewhere off the internet -  if you don't want to write it then enlist a friend to help you). If you have multiple entries you must make a separate post for each backstory UNLESS they share a story, in which case you may make one post, but please make that clear at the start of your story.

These are due by 11:59pm HP time on March 29th.

Procyon

Have you ever looked into the night sky and seen the constellation of Orion? How about the constellations of Canus Major and Canus Minor? Many legends are told of Orion’s two faithful dogs Sirius and Procyon. Sirius aka Canus Major and Procyon aka Canus Minor have been told as competitors for Orion’s attention, Sisters separated by the milky way, and even given different names with different lives. This however is the true story of Sirius and Procyon. These two dogs are real and every 500 years are sent to earth in hopes of doing some good. For many years the two dogs have fought for the attention of Orion. Sirius, the larger of the two and Orion’s favorite, has always managed to impress Orion the most on their trips to earth. Procyon the smaller brother has always lacked from his brother in some way or another. This time Procyon has arrived on earth determined to outshine the brightest star in the night sky so that he too can be looked upon with admiration from not only Orion but all who look up at the night sky in wonder. As all the gods, goddesses, and constellations arrive on Earth in their new bodies, the fight begins. Some are fighting for power, others for love. Procyon fights for acknowledgment. Awakening in the body of a rare Stabyhoun, Procyon begins his training for the battle with his brother for his chance to shine bright in the sky with all the other constellations and for the honor that comes with it. Procyon has already heard the rumors of Sirius arriving as a large and beautiful German Shepherd. A favorite breed of many humans, he has learned this time will be as hard if not harder than all the others. This year Procyon also has something else to fight for, Monoceros also known as the unicorn constellation is a very faint shining consetellation but Procyon would do anything for her. She is on Earth this time and if he does not want Sirius to win her he must defeat him this go around. Procyon has so much more to lose than ever before, defeat is not an option.

Gerbil's story:

Little Tommy Turvil's
parents didn’t want an animal bigger than a gerbil.
Tommy was terribly upset,
He wanted a pet , so he went to the vet
….. and came home with a puppy instead.

He doesn’t Bark!
Tommy said with a start.
And he definitely smells better
He’s as light as a feather

Tommy pled
With tears filling the eyeballs in his head
and his parents finally gave in.

The sun shone down into the meadow, illuminating a small herd of pegasi who idly grazed. A small breeze drifted through, ruffling manes in rainbow of colors. In the center of the herd, a mare whinnied softly, reaching down to nuzzle the small bundle on the ground beside her: her new foal. Her first foal. But there was no movement, no sound answering her call.

She tried again.

Every head in the meadow went up when they heard the strangled, pleading cry that Serenity made. There are not words to describe the loss and anguish.

Her baby, that she had waited for months, felt move and grow within her, was gone, never to take a breath, leaving the mare bereft and alone. She couldn’t move, everything was black to her eyes. Her herd - family and friends - gathered close, trying to comfort.

But as the days passed, Serenity did not regain the joy that she once had. Her world seemed bleak and cold. She could not even bring herself to spread her wings and rejoin her family in the sky. Some began to grow upset with her:

“Everything happens for a reason.”

“It was not meant to be.”

“It’s better this way.”

“You can try again another time.”

Hurt, and in shock, Serenity spread her wings, and without a second thought, left her own herd behind. Friends don’t belittle your loss. Friends know that everyone heals at a different pace. She ignored their hurt cries, and didn’t turn back.

She lost track of the time, how long she flew. But she saw a small glade below with the gleam of colors that could only be another pegasus herd, and she landed, needing the safety that only a herd could provide.

To her surprise, the mood in the glade was subdued, quiet. The herd was gathered, watching - something. She couldn’t see. The herd leader turned a head towards her, and seeing she was no threat, made space for her in the circle. There, curled up and unmoving, was a tiny foal. Memories came flooding back, and that feeling of utter loss reared up stronger.

“His mother died.”

“No one in the herd has milk for him.”

The words did not register, caught up as she was in her own sense of loss. The poor colt, alone in the world.

“My foal died five days ago. I-”

Her head flew up in surprise, as without another word, she found herself pushed forward by the herd, until she was beside the weakened baby. Small nudges helped him to stand, and he began to suckle.

A sign of relief went through the herd. They had lost a friend, a sister, a daughter, but her colt did not need to die that day as well.

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. But always remember: you are not alone.

The Alchemist

The full moon shone an eerie blood red the night the filly was born. Long shadows cast by trees tinted red by the moonlight fell over the barn where the only sounds were the mare’s labored breathing. In a field nearby, the sire, a destrier renowned for his strength and power in war, paced along the fence, awaiting the news that a fierce colt had been born from him. Overseeing the birth was the stablemaster, Ulric, a solid man with broad shoulders and surprisingly gentle hands. He looked over the filly to confirm her health, sighing in disappointment. He knew the master, a knight by the name of Carac, had been hoping for a colt. His destrier was getting old. This filly would not be totally useless; she would make good breeding stock eventually, but Carac would still be angry.

Lost in thought, the stablemaster did not notice the strange glow beginning to appear on the filly’s left flank. Delicate, intricate marks began to sink into the filly’s flesh, as though a knife cut into the skin, though without any pain or bloodshed. Each mark emitted a subtle glow. Finally taking notice, Ulric leapt back in shock, staring wide-eyed at the markings, which stood out starkly against the filly’s jet black coat. Not believing himself to be a particularly superstitious man, Ulric stared more in curiosity than fear, though still not daring to touch the filly, lest the marks be of witchcraft. Next to the filly, the mare weakened rapidly, her breathing quick and shallow. Swallowing his suspicions, Ulric moved to the mare’s side in an attempt to keep her alive.

Outside, sensing something was wrong, the stallion galloped up and down the length of the pasture, snorting and tossing his great black head. Ulric worked over the mare, his forehead glistening with sweat, until he had to admit defeat as the mare sighed her last breath. Glancing from the mare’s lifeless form over to the shivering filly, Ulric tentatively traced a finger along the glowing marks on her flank. Glancing around, Ulric carefully lifted the tiny filly into his arms where she snuggled against his warm chest. Making a decision very quickly, Ulric wrapped the filly in his great coat and guided one of the master’s coursers out of its stall. Mounting the courser, he dug his heels into his heaving sides and galloped away from the barn, the squealing destrier, and his master. Bundled against Ulric’s warm breast, the tiny filly slept soundlessly through the long, red night.

***
Many moons passed and the filly, hidden away in a small fortress by the stablemaster, grew into a beautiful young mare. As she grew, she began to develop strange powers, powers of healing and of prescience. In her dreams, she witnessed the developing sickness of the stablemaster, her only companion, and, though distantly in the future, his eventual death. Determined to alter the course of the future, she began to study the stars and planets, herbs and base elements, with the goal of saving her dear stable master’s life.

Though she did not know it at the time, she was destined to become a powerful alchemical master and healer, The Alchemist who could alter the elements and heal those even on the brink of death.

Foxfire - Your 2020/ Dog Tickets/Show Mascot !

Foxfire was born under the stars of Australia during the horrid wildfires that plagued the country. Over 1 billion animals were harmed during the 2019-2020 wildfires and Foxfire, the fireheart, was brave enough to escape to spread awareness. Foxfire is your symbol of hope, your bright light during times of despair, and your confidence to be brave when all else seems inevitable! It was she who brought on the rains that ended the fires and she who continues to protect all the wildlife recovering still to this day.
This beautiful Anatolian Shepherd Dog is large and in-charge and ready to be your 2020 Mascot!

This Is Me (hORSE tICKETS/sHOWS 2020 mASCOT

“Hi, do you want to play with us?” I looked up in shock as Barbie one of the pretty girls came over to my corner of the field and nodded shyly to her.

“Well you can’t, giraffe.” She bounded off with her tail in the air as she trotted off to laugh with her friends. I held my head up and looked at them even as I felt the embarrassment. Stupid to feel such hope as they never invited me to play and regularly mocked me.  I wish I could toss my head and stomp my hoof and show them but I froze inside and was so shy I was unable to do anything except quietly pretend their mean names and leaving me out meant nothing to me.

Over time, I was sold and ended up in different homes but it always seemed to be the same anywhere I went. I was different and that led to ridicule.   Anyone that bought me did so as I was cheap and because they wanted a horse but not because they wanted me.

“This Is Me is in here.” I harrumphed at this as yet another family was brought in by the yard owner to reject me.  A young teenager came into the stable and I put my ears back and ran at her.

“Whoa.” The girl rushed back out and her parents looked concerned. I snorted. I didn’t want them anyway! I turned my back on them and looked out the window just as one of the young liveries jumped a small cross pole and gave her pony a big hug.

I shied as I felt something on my shoulder.  The teenager had come back in and placed her hand on me.  Glaring, I tried to shake her off but she had a firm hold of my headcollar and turned me back around to face the front of the stable.  I put my ears back and tried to whip my head around to bite her.

“You said she was good for…” Here was the start of the rejection from the parents.

“She is but she’s had a bit of a tough life due to her looks.  Give her some love and you’ll have a friend for life.  Try her out.”  They groomed me and tacked me up but I acted aloof.

Off we went to the school and the girl got aboard and I went through the motions – we walked, we trotted, we cantered and we did a little jump but I did it without pizazz.  “She doesn’t have much life about her does she?” I rolled my eyes and looked into the distance.

“Oh mum, she will.” Will I?  “She’s perfect.”  Yeah, right.  Another joke at my expense.

A few months later.

I lifted my head from grazing as a car turned into the car park.   “I thought you had no interest in being here?” My field mate enquired sarcastically.

“That was before. Life is no longer about being groomed because it’s necessary before being ridden or being galloped around fields and over jumps without a pat well done or being laughed at.”

“Ahhh, Charlotte managed to get through that wall you erected.” Corporal laughed as he went back to grazing but I watched the gate and as soon as Charlotte was in sight I galloped to the gate and skidded to a halt before she reached it.

“Hey.” She sounded delighted and I put my nose out for her to stroke before taking the carrot she held.  This was the first time I had galloped over as although I watched her approach I usually only walked so far and made her come to me.

It took a lot of patience and time on Charlottes part but she treated me kindly and firmly and gradually I put my trust back in her.  We were never going to be world champions but for the first time in my life I had a friend.

We got some hurtful comments when we were out riding but Charlotte laughed them off and patted my neck and so I was able to ignore them for the most part and trot along with my head held high while I knew that we were having fun and enjoying life.

Remember - true friends like you for WHO you are

TXIKI

They named me Txiki, from under the dune

Born by the light of the bright round full moon.

The smallest of three, with big Dumbo-sized ears,

I’ll be owl bait for sure, that was their great fear.

One morning I woke, and they were all gone

Left for the hunt, they’d left me at dawn.

Since I was so small, they left me behind

It was often like that; they paid me no mind.

This time I’ll show them, I thought with a growl

And off I went, paying no mind to the owls.

I kept to the shadows, then started to climb

Until the sight of the sun meant it was bed time.

After a rest, I was up like a shot

Determined to find food meant to be caught.

I’d bring it all back, I’d show them all!

Just because I’m tiny doesn’t mean I’m too small.

Just as I came over the crest of a hill

I saw it, right in front of me, the perfect kill.

A nest of bird eggs, just left out for me

It was just as if it was meant to be!

Feeling a bit peckish, I ate one so small,

It was my right, I’d worked hard after all!

It was very yummy, but now it was time

To head back with another, to commit this egg crime.

I carefully took one, no need to be greedy,

I left two behind, we weren’t all that needy.

I carried it gentle, inside of my mouth

It wasn’t that comfortable, to tell you the truth!

I when I finally made it back, down into our hole

My family’s faces were something quite droll!

For they all looked so sad, like someone had passed.

But when they all saw me, that all changed so fast!

They all looked amazed, asked where I had been.

So I told them a story of all that I’d seen.

I finished it all with this wisdom, I called:

"You can do anything, even if you are small!"

Samwise
1992-2018

On November 29, 2018, the world lost the best pony ever, my Samwise Fuzzyface.

Anyone who knows me knows that Sam was my favourite horse at the barn I volunteer at, TROtt, my heart horse. Old volunteer or new, those involved with my barn and those who aren’t, I would tell them that Super Sam was the best, because he was, end of story.

Sam possessed the amazing ability to sense what his rider could and couldn’t do, and behaved accordingly. For a young child or disabled rider, he would take the gentlest of slow steps to safely carry them around the ring during a lesson. He was the perfect pony for anyone nervous, anyone sitting on a horse for the first time...he easily put their fears at ease with his calm, kind nature. He gave those who struggled to walk or play sports the wings in which to do so. With his exercise riders such as myself, he would zip around the ring with speed and responsiveness, loving nothing more than a good trot, or when he was lucky, a good canter. You could always tell he was enjoying himself in his rides with his fuzzy little pony ears forward through it all. He was also one of the best horses at the barn to train a new volunteer or horse handler because he was eternally patient.

Every time he saw me in the barn or out in his field with with his buddies Dakota and Teddy, his little ears would pop forward and he’d do what I affectionately call the “treat face”...ears forward, and he’d look away slightly, then back as if to say “is that for me? Really??”. This was especially effective in the winter, when he’d grow the most insane fuzzy pony winter coat...a good inch and a half of fuzzy hair all over his body, legs included. He’d turn into a seriously fuzzy teddy bear.

If I had a bad week, I always looked forward to going to the barn on Saturdays because I knew that I could go give Sam a hug and take a moment to let the week wash away in his presence….he’d always take it, and listen to me talk about whatever was bothering me, unconditionally.

Sam spent an astounding 19 years as a TROtt therapy horse, and would have hit his 20 year anniversary in February 2019...a feat that only one other pony has reached in TROtt’s 40 year history. In the high stress environment that therapy riding can be for a pony, with all the unknowns of a lesson with things being thrown, children screaming, crying, etc, that’s an especially impressive feat. It truly has not been the same there without his fuzzy face to greet me.

Only Ashes

All of the barn workers had gone home for the day when it happened. The barn was dark and I had started to snooze in my stall, in the light of the full moon coming through the open door at edge of the barn next to my place. A twig snapped and my ears twitched, picking up the sound. Guess I wasn’t sleeping yet. I watched silently as the dark figure entered the barn. Taking a breath, I recognized the sound as one of the old barn workers who hadn’t fed me in awhile. I’d heard the others gossiping he’d been fired, whatever that meant.

As I watched he took something out of his pocket, made a noise with it, and suddenly there’s a flash of light, which falls to the ground. Then the figure runs out the door. I think. I’m too busy watching the flash of light grow bigger as it spreads along the floor, eating up the scraps of hay. Not good not good!

I let out a shrill cry, and start kicking at the walls of my stall, trying to get the attention of someone, anyone, to let me out so I can get out of here. The fire is spreading quickly, but thankfully I’m the only one indoors tonight...the rest of the herd is out in the far field, far away from this disaster.

It’s getting closer, the hot flames eating up everything in its path and using it for fuel. Frantic, I scream out a whinny and frantically kick the walls, trying to alert someone that I need help, or better yet, break down the walls myself to get myself to freedom. This couldn’t be the end!

A giant creature in a mask stomps in, kind of in the shape of a human, undoes the lock on my door, and shoves the door wide open, before moving out of the way. I bolt past him out into the fresh air, running as fast as my feet can carry me towards the far field and my herd. I jump the fence with ease, calling to my friends as I approach them. Reaching them, I slow and drop my head, happy to graze with them, trying to ignore the ashes that rain down around us from the barn fire, carried to us by the cool night breeze blowing.

I’m content, knowing they’re only ashes.

Togo's Journey

Are you sitting comfortably so I can tell you a snippet of my amazing journey?  We had a precious package on our sled and this is a small part of a journey that included 20 mushers and approximately 150 sled dogs covering 674 miles in five and a half days,

Leonhard Seppala was my owner and he complained that it was bitterly cold as he wrapped his furs around him.  I could hear the wind howling all around us and I could feel it dancing around my ears and rippling my coat.  The snow was hard under our paws and it seemed dangerously harmless as it fell around and on us.

We had run for miles and now we chose to take a shortcut across the ice.  It looked solid and my instincts told me we could make it.  My instincts were so solid that I had a longer lead than most lead dogs in a team get but it meant I could pick out the safest route for us to take.

I set off on the ice feeling my team mates running behind me on my chosen path and the sled gliding behind them.  I ran a fairly straight line only moving to the left or right now and then when it didn’t feel right.  I was alert as I raced across the smooth surface but I felt it.

My mind slid back to when I was a puppy and I managed to escape from any pen, barn or tether because this was what I wanted to do.  I used to stalk and chase any reindeer that I scented as I followed behind Seppala and his team.  The reindeer tended to be alert so I had to be sneaky to get close and then running after them was fun as I was born to run.

I shook my head to get rid of the memories as I had to focus.

That slight movement caused my heart to skip a beat and I threw my weight forward running faster.  I was already going full speed but I needed to go.  We had to move.  The dogs behind picked up on the change in me and they followed.  We raced as fast as we could but could we make it? I sure hoped so.  I couldn’t go any faster but we were so close.  The ice dipped to the side of us and we felt the sled move and try to pull us.  We kept on target.  I saw the powdery snow beyond.  I couldn’t think about what was behind me or to the sides.

We ran and we dipped all directions as the ice started to crack.  An ominous, disturbing sound when you’re not on safe ground.  I tugged a little more and I reached it and my paws and claws could get more purchase.

My team was still on the ice due to my long line.  I had to keep going.  Harder and further we went until finally two by two the team made it onto the land but it still took extraordinary effort before the sled made it off with us.

There was no time to rest or praise our efforts as our job was not done and so we raced off into the distance to continue our part in the 1925 Serum Run to Nome.

Name: Hollow Galaxy.

Age: Why would I tell you?

Gender: Mare, in case it isn’t obvious…

Visual Description: Depending on the light, it can show as either dark smoky grey or bright dapple grey. Though most would just call it ‘grey’.

“Those who know me, know me as Gala. You? You can call me Hollow. You’d like to know more about me and my history? Why?” her ears flick back as she snorts “I guess I can tell you…” she turned her head and stretched her jaw a bit before turning back to the inquirer, her one eye blinking bored-ly at them “Well, what I can remember starts out when I was just a young filly. Maybe about two years old? I was galloping around the field with my favorite human at the time. He was a young man, who was always kind to me. Always fed me and…” she trailed off looking past the one in front of her as if reliving it “Anyway, we were playing around like always when I slipped. I’d never done it before but I didn’t see the divot… and when I fell, everything seemed fine. I got up, shook off but my Human looked very worried. He moved to my left side and I felt his soft touch on my cheek but… I… I couldn’t see him. I didn’t know why, but I couldn’t. I got startled and backed away.

He looked so sad…” another snort and a slight paw at the ground “that’s when I smelled it. The Iron tang of blood. I had cut my cheek, which is why he was so concerned. No worries. I’d done it before. He led me into the barn and pampered me as usual. Nice warm Bran mash, a cool scrub down, and then the vet came out to check out my cheek. I found that odd…” the pain on her face became visible “That’s when I realized it… When the vet went to touch my cheek, I again couldn’t see him. I startled back again and my Human calmed me. He said ‘ Don’t worry Gala, we’ll get through this too.’ Which confused me… What would we get through? Why couldn’t I see anything on my left side?.. Flash forward a week. After 7 days of wound dressings, daily meds that he thought I didn’t know about but ate because I knew he wanted me to.. and some tears from him the Vet came back out. I heard them talking ‘Her vision hasn’t returned.’ ‘It may be best to remove the damaged tissue.’ ‘Will she ever be able to compete?’ ‘That’s up to her.’ I didn’t really know what it all meant, but the following day my Human loaded me up into the trailer and took me to the vets house instead of the vet coming to us. When I woke up, I felt much better…. I don’t remember falling asleep, but apparently I had.

I still couldn’t see on my left side but at least now it didn’t hurt… at least not the same way it did before. My human took me home, and continued to spoil me.” She paused for questions. “These scars? Oh, those are from me learning how to navigate again. I had to figure out how to walk around again. I had to re-learn where to put my feet. It was not easy, I lashed out many times at my Human out of anger and frustration. He was very calm with me. He cried many times but always told me he was sorry about everything… Now that I’m older, we have faced many challenges together but the best part is… He got his dream. We were able to compete. Now that I know what that means… He wanted to be able to ‘look better’ than some of the other horses we ride around with. Even half blind I was able to make him happy, and that’s all I wanted to do. So, that’s my history. Hope you enjoyed it.

Frank was born into a herd of very serious, fairly miserable unicorns. The unicorns had always been hunted for their magical powers, which were located within their horns. Huntsmen would hunt down these mystical beasts and cut off their horns to acquire their immortal powers. The herd, therefore, had to set some strict rules to ensure their safety. This unfortunately meant that there wasn’t any time for fooling around, and therefore Frank wasn’t able to frolic around with her fellow herd members. This left Frank colorless, depressed and very sad.

One day, as the herd were travelling down the grey and miserable brick road trying to find a new town to call home, they were walking alongside a calm, moving seashore. Frank saw a sharp object moving in the water. “Guys, wait, what’s that?!” she gasped, but her voice was ignored and the herd moved onward. Frank went closer to the shore to investigate this anomaly in the water. “Is it a stick?” … “No, it’s too light in color”. Maybe a human object that’s been thrown out? Frank put her head down to look towards the object when out popped a big white sharp tusk, followed by a round face and a whale wearing a hat. “Hi, I’m Lisa and I’m a Narwhal”. Frank whinnied and leapt back, falling over as she hit the sand with a thud. “A whaaaaaat?!” she asked. She blinked and couldn’t quite believe her eyes. What was this water whale doing with a tusk and a hat that looked like a horn? “I made a wish last night that I wanted to be a unicorn and The Mighty Moby sent me this horn for me to wear knowing that I WILL BE A UNICORN”. Frank chuckled to herself. “My herd doesn't appreciate me, and they always ignore me.” “Well why don’t we make our own home? We’ll call it ‘Lisa Frank Land’ and it’ll be the best in all the kingdom" said Lisa. In a flash, Lisa whipped out a unicorn floatie and invited Frank to jump on. They sailed off into the sunset and lived happily ever after in their wonderful new land of vibrant rainbow color.

Missy

My name is Missy and im 9 years old. Im just here to tell you a bit about myself. I was born a farm dog. Running, playing and sleeping wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted. It was great! My human is Erik, he has a bad temper, im here to keep him calm. Without me he throws a lot of things, and yells and screams. I help him stay calm, and boy have I helped him well!

We left the farm a long time ago, and gained more humans, and nicer humans! My auntie Amber is the best human! She looks after me when my Erik is not here. I don’t know where he goes, but hes gone for a long time all the time! Auntie Amber gives me belly rubs, and walkies, and makes sure my belly is full all the time!
I used to get out of the yard a lot. Always looking for some nice doggie friends. Apparently that’s not the right thing to do, the fence is supposed to keep me in.. oops. I got in trouble a lot of the time. They stopped trusting me outside by myself I had babies once because of a doggie friend I met once. I started getting hungry all the time, and tired, and FAT! Can you believe that! One day I got so uncomfortable I thought I was dying, my humans had to take me the vet – that dreaded place! They gave me needles, I woke up feeling all weird, and I had 3 mini versions of me I now had to take care of.
My humans were very helpful with my babies. As they got bigger though, they also started getting into trouble. Chewing things, peeing everywhere, eating things they shouldn’t. What was I supposed to do, stop them? Ya right, they would all gang up on me. So I just let them be!

I got tired of being with them all the time, eventually. Little attention hogs! It was no longer about me! A lot of people started showing up to look at them, but what about me! I came second in those days, it was upsetting. My babies left me one by one after a little while. I was told they had to go help other humans like I help my human Erik. So, I was ok with that. Erik hurt himself at the place he goes to all the time. So he gets to be home with me all the time now! I love it! Plus, I haven’t felt the need to leave the backyard to find doggie friends. It must be because Erik is now home all the time, I don’t need new friends.

Don’t worry, auntie Amber is still always there to give me belly rubs and walkies! My favourite time of the day! 💖

Here is Kovu's story! I got a little carried away. Please let me know if anyone has trouble reading it, it opens right up for me, so I'm hoping it's not just because I'm the creater.

P.S. you might want to grab a drink and a snack before starting his journey!!

Calaca #125058

Today has always been my favorite day. And that's because I get to see you. I may have left the world long ago, but I wouldn't had I got to choose. That's why today is my favorite day: everyone gets to come back and see their people on earth. And every year since I' left, I've come back to see you. Because you were my girl, remember? And I was your boy. When you found me, I was nothing but skin and bones. Then you fed me and gave me a place to sleep. You were the first person to show me love. So every day from then on we were side-by-side. I would walk you to school and back again. I didn't mind waiting for you, there was always good food to find in town. You remember when we would run through the creek and chase frogs? I loved playing with you, we had so much fun. I thought those were my favorite days, but this one is so much better.

When I left, you were very sad, and it broke my heart. The first time I came back I was worried I wouldn't find you, but you came to were I was laid to rest and made my bed so pretty. I loved all the flowers and my favorite treat you left for me. Wasn't a big fan of the candles, maybe you should've given those to the cat, but I was grateful all the same. Every year we would come back to this place together. And every year I'd watch you grow. Then one day you brought your husband. I liked him, he made you happy. Just when I thought you couldn't be happier, I got to meet your baby, then another, and another. As every year went by, you never forgot about me, always meeting me here on this day.

But today wasn't the same. There were no flowers, or treats, or even candles on my bed. Today you weren't here, where had you gone? I couldn't miss seeing you, so I went looking for you. I stopped by our old home first, but someone else lives there now. I looked and looked for you all day long. The sun is setting and my time is running short. Where are you? Will I ever see you again? Just when I had given up hope, your familiar smell caught my nose. I followed it and found your family. When I first came into this new house, everyone looked so sad. I soon found out why. Your hair had gone white and your skin a little pale, but you were still the same to me. My same friend who, all those years ago, dragged a puppy from a well and into her heart. They said it wouldn't be long now, so I laid at your feet just like I did when we were young. As the sun dipped below the horizon, you raised up, looked at me, and pet my head. “Hello, Calaca,” you smiled. We stayed a moment longer, then we parted in death the same way we had lived in life: together.
