![]() This week, I'm focusing on a rather complex topic. As many MH topics are! That is okay, our brains are complex, our lives are complex, and therefore so is our health. This week - PTSD : Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder . I felt this was a good week for this after Labor Day Weekend which is typically "celebrated" with stores hosting sales, BBQ's and gatherings being had, and maybe some fireworks displays! But, with all that.. it can also bring on an all too familiar PTSD trigger. So, let's hop into it! ![]() As always, I will trigger warn as I may touch on some sensitive topics. Mentions of stress or abuse - causes of trauma - triggers for PTSD and other things may get mentioned. So, if these are things that may trigger you. Please know that there is no pressure to read this "article" of mine and that I'm always here for you! I'm always happy to type up an article that doesn't include your triggers if you message me privately! ![]() Post Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) is defined by the VA (Veterans Affairs) as : " a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. It's normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. If symptoms last more than a few months, it may be PTSD. The good news is that there are effective treatments." PTSD is caused by a trauma - a stressful event. Not all stressful events are combat involved. Your stressor could have been a bad car accident, a traumatic event at school like being yelled at or singled out by a teacher, it could even be the pandemic going on around us! Stress effects everyone different and just because your event might not be a "huge deal" - to you, it is and THAT IS VALID! Your trauma is no less important than anyone elses trauma. Let me say that again ... Your trauma is just as important and valid as anyone elses! This is not a game of "whose trauma is "worse" or who had it "worse". This is a matter of something happened to you, it effected you, and now you have side effects. And I am not saying that to belittle anyone - I say it to join us together and to reassure you that your trauma is not something to fit into a box or diminish. ![]() Above is an image from a recent study done at Yale about the effects of PTSD and a new treatment they may have discovered. Full article and photo details here : https://news.yale.edu/2017/07/17/new-ptsd-study-identifies-potential-path-treatment The good thing to know is - you are not alone and there is a light at the end of the tunnel, there is a way out. There are MANY MANY tips, coping mechanisms, treatments and therapies that you can utilize! (Resources with websites/phone numbers will be listed below). I'm gonna share a few youtube links as I know some of us are visual/auditory learners and this info graphic! As always, my inbox is always open. Judgement free. I'm here for you! I care about you. It was/is! I want to cover it in a way that provides the info, without generalizing it too much or being too specific.. and also trying not to potentially trigger anyone! This was a tough one. But I'm glad that you liked it! Thank you for reading! |
