MHM : Holiday Stress.

Good Morning Fellow HP Mental Health Lovers!
I’m sorry that this post is a day late. As some of you may know, I took my re-test yesterday for the Real Estate Exam. Unfortunately, I did not pass. As you can imagine, I was a bit upset and so I didn’t want to post while I wasn’t in a good headspace. I am studying again and hopefully 3rd time is the charm!

Today, I want to just talk about the holidays in general and how they can be tough.


The holiday season can be one of the hardest times in people’s lives. The expectations of sending gifts to numerous people when maybe your budget is a bit tight, the hoards of people going last minute shopping and stressing out people working in Customer Service positions, those with PTSD struggling during the fireworks displays, those with trauma surrounding the holidays, and those who have lost someone and may be spending the holidays alone. Then mix in the fact that the world has been living with a pandemic for the past year? Two? I’ve lost count. Holiday season can be rough for more reasons than the same Christmas songs playing on a loop. So, remember that you are not alone and your HP family loves you and has your back!

So, how do we cope with the holiday season in healthy ways? Well, this student from Baylor wrote a short article that lists out a few steps to helping you get through the holidays :

Step 1. Realize that it is okay, to not be okay. Your feelings are valid. You do not have to put on the happy mask just to please everyone.
Step 2. Do something you are good at or enjoy. Serotonin boost from accomplishing something you already enjoy? Double whammy bonus!
Step 3. Make that new year list! Your goals, places you want to travel to, things you want to see/do, things you want to manifest! Give yourself something to look forward to.
Step 4. If you are able and it is safe to, help others. Holiday season always brings about tons of charities and local things you can get involved in.
Step 5. Comfort shows. That’s right, sometimes you just need a good couch potato moment with your favorite blanket and the show/movie that just makes you feel safe and loved. (Catch me watching Twilight for the 5984375987 time.)

I could google and read articles for HOURS about different ways that people cope and deal with the holidays. Everyone has their own way of handling things right? Another way to distract yourself : HP ! You have a beautiful community of people right here that are here to help! We post TONS of events and activities during the month of December to give you something to do and look forward to each day! Additionally, more events = more people hanging out on the site which = more people to talk to in basic chat! If you really want a fun distraction, message me and I can give you a tarot reading about what the future holds for you in 2022! ;P

The moral of my story here? Sometimes the holidays suck. So, don’t be afraid to reach out to someone that you trust to help you get through it. Remember that you are a survivor because each day that you wake up - you’ve survived. You can get through this. We are already half way through!
I heard a funny quote via Tiktok the other day that I want to share. “If you struggle with depression but manage to wake up every morning and get through the day? Then you aren’t struggling with depression - depression is struggling with you!” While I see how that can be slightly problematic phrasing as it invalidates your depression.. It’s also slightly encouraging because it’s like “Yeah! I kick depression’s butt every time I wake up!” . So, take that with a grain of salt.. Maybe it will be something oddly encouraging for you.

Now, this is usually the part of the post where I start sharing inspirational Tedtalks. But, instead today .. I’m gonna share some positivity and motivation videos, funny memes, and just things to help you survive this holiday season.

I hope that this helps! I hope that maybe some little nugget from all of this will help you to survive this holiday season. I get super overwhelmed even going basic grocery shopping this time of year. People are everywhere and the lack of care for their surroundings is saddening. Some people are great though so it's not all chaos and panic.

The intense amount of people in stores stresses me out! You are not alone in that! People definitely lack situational and spacial awareness during the holidays.
