The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a series of US-based horse races for three-year-old thoroughbreds. It consists of the Kentucky Derby (held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY), Preakness Stakes (held at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, MD), and Belmont Stakes (held at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY). The three Triple Crown races have attracted over 4,200 entrants since they were established. Of these, 292 horses have won a single leg of the Triple Crown, 52 horses have won two of the races, and 13 horses have won all three races. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Justify in 2018. Secretariat holds the fastest speed records for each of the Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), the Preakness Stakes (1:53), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24).

Welcome back for another year of TTCG!  This event has been hosted by me almost every year since it was established in 2012 and it is something that I truly look forward to running for the community.

While this game revolves around actual IRL horse races that will be run over the next month and a half, YOU DO NOT NEED TO WATCH ANY RACES OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HORSE RACING IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE! While I will be posting potentially lengthy updates or associated facts regarding the races and the contenders, this is provided as optional reading to help players become more knowledgeable about the participating horses and the sport itself. Have a question about horse racing? Feel free to ask in a reply to this thread and I will do my best to answer it!

Opening dates for each race are tentative. They may open later than planned depending on the information available for the horses that are running. I will post a reply to this forum thread when the draws open for each race. If you want to be notified each time draws open, you can subscribe to the thread and you will be messaged each time a reply is posted!

KENTUCKY DERBY: 5/1 THROUGH 5/7 6:00 PM EST
PREAKNESS STAKES: 5/15 THROUGH 5/21 6:00 PM EST
BELMONT STAKES: 6/5 THROUGH 6/11 6:00 PM EST

In order to participate, you will need to purchase draws for each race. EACH DRAW WILL ASSIGN ONE HORSE TO YOU AT RANDOM USING A GENERATOR. You can have a total of three draws per race. DRAWS CANNOT BE PURCHASED UNTIL THEIR RESPECTIVE RACE IS OPEN FOR DRAWS (THIS IS TYPICALLY A WEEK BEFORE THE RACE WILL RUN; SEE THE TENTATIVE DATES ABOVE). I.E. When I post a reply to this thread stating that the Kentucky Derby draws are open, you can send the HPD to #113 for 1-3 draws for the Derby depending on how many you would like. YOU CAN REPEAT THIS STEP AGAIN WHEN DRAWS OPEN FOR THE PREAKNESS AND BELMONT (AGAIN, WHEN I MAKE THE POST TYPICALLY A WEEK BEFORE THE RACE RUNS STATING DRAWS ARE OPEN FOR THAT RACE).

DRAW 1: 7 MIL
DRAW 2: 12 MIL
DRAW 3: 16 MIL

If you are a newer player (joined in the past twelve months),
you are eligible for a 50% discount on your draws!
You can view your join date on your home page.

ALL FUNDS RECEIVED ARE ADDED TO THE JACKPOT FOR THE RESPECTIVE RACE WHICH IS AWARDED AS PART OF MANY PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS. Every jackpot will automatically begin at 250mil (150 provided by me and 100 provided by Koni via admin donation). This is a 150% increase from the starting jackpot in 2021!

EACH DRAW WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHICH HORSES HAVE NOT BEEN DRAWN YET. If someone has drawn Bob, Bob will not be drawn again until all other horses have been drawn. This will ensure that at least every horse is drawn at least once and reduces duplicate draws as much as possible.

IN THE EVENT THAT ONE OF YOUR DRAWN HORSES IS SCRATCHED FROM THE RACE (REMOVED/WILL NOT BE RUNNING), ONE OF TWO THINGS WILL HAPPEN. If an alternate horse is entered in its place, your draw will be applied to the alternate. If no alternate is entered, you will be drawn a replacement horse from the generator.

IF YOU WIN, YOU WILL NEVER WIN LESS THAN YOU PAID IN. If you paid 16mil for a draw 3, but your split winnings of the jackpot amounts to less than 16mil, I will pay the difference to make sure you get back what you paid in. This is a safeguard for the players in case a race doesn’t have many horses and too many people draw a single horse.

HERE IS A BASIC EXAMPLE OF HOW THE PROCESS WORKS!

1. Blitz sends 16mil to #113 for a Draw 3 for the Kentucky Derby.
2. I draw 3 horses at random for Blitz: Bob, Sue, and Nora.
3. It is now 5/7 and the Kentucky Derby just ran!
4. Bob placed 2nd, but Sue and Nora placed 5th and 8th respectively.
5. Since Blitz had their name assigned to Bob, they win the 2nd place prize. If another player's name was also on Bob, they would split the jackpot for 2nd place and the non-jackpot prizes would be raffled to either Blitz or the other winner.

IF YOUR HORSE WINS FIRST PLACE:
50% OF THE JACKPOT (split equally if multiple players drew the same horse)
6 MONTH UPGRADE (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO KONI!
SET OF HORSE TICKETS (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!
SET OF DOG TICKETS (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!
10,000 POINTS FOR ANIMAL (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!

IF YOUR HORSE WINS SECOND PLACE:
30% OF THE JACKPOT (split equally if multiple players drew the same horse)
20 EXTRA ENERGY FOR ANIMAL (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!
5,000 POINTS FOR ANIMAL (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!

IF YOUR HORSE WINS THIRD PLACE:
20% OF THE JACKPOT (split equally if multiple players drew the same horse)
10 EXTRA ENERGY FOR ANIMAL (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!
2,000 POINTS FOR ANIMAL (raffled to one winner if multiple are eligible) SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!

Non-jackpot prizes (energy, tickets, points, etc) will be granted to two separate players if more than one player has drawn the winning horse. This will be decided via randomizer.

BONUS PRIZE: If you purchase a draw 3 and all three horses place in the top three, you will win 20,000 POINTS FOR ANIMAL (SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!) AND A 1 MONTH UPGRADE (PROVIDED BY ME). This will only be awarded to one person per race. If multiple people are eligible, one winner will be drawn via generator.

_________________________________________________

PARTICIPATION RAFFLE: Everyone that participates in a race will earn 1 raffle ticket towards a drawing for 10,000 POINTS FOR AN ANIMAL (SPECIAL THANKS TO BV!) AND A 1 MONTH UPGRADE (PROVIDED BY ME). This drawing will occur after each race and will only be drawn for the participants in that specific race. Your name will be entered even if you only purchase one draw for that race.

HPD DONATIONS: Do you want to earn 3x raffle tickets for the participation raffle? If you donate 30mil towards the jackpot, you will earn extra tickets for every participation raffle as long as you purchase at least one draw for each race to ensure you are entered as a participant. Each player can only donate ONCE. If multiple players donate during one race, the donations may be added to a future race instead of the current race to keep all jackpot prizes equally large.
*Your HPD donation bonus tickets do not apply to the first, second, or third place randomizer, only the participation raffle.

SPECIAL THANKS TO BROKEN VOW AND KONI FOR SUPPLYING STAFF-PROVIDED PRIZES ALONGSIDE MY OWN!
PLEASE GIVE THEM ALL THE LOVE IN THE WORLD FOR HELPING MAKE TTCG A SUPER REWARDING EVENT!

YOU CAN NOW PURCHASE DRAWS FOR THE KENTUCKY DERBY!
DRAWS CAN BE PURCHASED UNTIL
5/7/2022 6:00 PM EST.

Post Position Draw will occur on MONDAY 5/2/2022 BETWEEN 2:00 AND 3:00 PM EST. It will be livestreamed on the official Kentucky Derby website. This draw will finalize who will be participating and determine which position each horse will start from. This can be very important in determining how well a horse will run the race. For more information on the importantance of post position, click here! Morning-line (starting) odds for the race will be announced shortly after the draw. I will also update the list of horses to reflect their post draws the same day.

Post time for the race is set for approximately 5/7/2022 AT APPROXIMATELY 6:57 PM EST. This is when the horses will begin making their way to the gate to start the race. You can watch coverage offered by NBC from 12:30pm to 2:30pm EST on NBCSN and from 2:30pm to 7:30pm EST on NBC, or on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.

WHAT IS THE LENGTH OF THE KENTUCKY DERBY? The Derby is 1¼ miles or 10 furlongs. A furlong is a racing term that refers to an eighth of a mile.

WHAT DAY IS THE KENTUCKY DERBY HELD EACH YEAR? The Kentucky Derby has been held every year since 1875 and has been staged on the first Saturday in May every year since 1946, with two exceptions. The 1945 Derby was held June 9 because of World War II and the 2020 Kentucky Derby was held Sept. 5 after it was moved over fears of the coronavirus pandemic.

WHO CAN RUN IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY? The race is open to up to 20 3-year-old horses that have qualified through Churchill Downs' "Road to the Kentucky Derby" points system first implemented for the 2013 running. Prep races running from September through April reward horses doing their best running closest to May 1.

WHAT IS THE KENTUCKY OAKS RACE? The Kentucky Oaks is a Grade I stakes race for 3-year-old Thoroughbred fillies that takes place on the Friday that precedes the Derby.

CAN A FILLY RUN IN THE KENTUCKY DERBY? Fillies have run in and won the Kentucky Derby, though none have tried since the current points system came into effect in 2013, which requires fillies to race against colts before the Derby. Among the 40 fillies to run, Regret (1915), Genuine Risk (1980) and Winning Colors (1988) were Derby winners.

HOW MUCH DOES THE KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER GET? In 2021, the total purse was $3 million, divided between the race's top five finishers. The winner received $1.86 million, the second-place finisher took home $600,000, third place received $300,000, the fourth-place finisher got $150,000 and the fifth-place finisher was given $90,000.

01. Nineteen past winners have had names beginning with the letter "S," including Secretariat, the fastest horse in Kentucky Derby history, who completed the 1973 race in just under two minutes.

02. Only three horses raced in the 1892 Kentucky Derby.

03. The traditional drink of the Derby is the mint julep, and over 120,000 are said to be consumed at the race each year.

04. The youngest jockey to win the esteemed race, Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton, was just 15 come derby day in 1892. Bill Shoemaker continues to hold the title as the oldest winner; he was 54 when he took home the 1986 title.

05. The Derby is also referred to as 'The Run for the Roses' because the winner is awarded a blanket sewn with over 400 roses post-race. This blanket weighs about 40 lbs.

06. Diane Crump was the first woman jockey to ever ride in the Derby; there has yet to be a female winner, but Shelley Riley came the closest in 1992 when she came in second..

07. The Derby has never been cancelled or postponed due to inclement weather.

08. The Kentucky Derby was started by Lewis Clark Jr.—grandson of William Clark, half of the famous explorer duo Lewis and Clark—after he saw England's Epsom Derby.

09. Only three fillies (female horses) have won the Derby: Regret in 1915, Genuine Risk in 1980, and Winning Colors in 1988.

10. The race was first televised in 1952.

From the disqualification of Maximum Security in 2019 to the coronavirus-delayed race in 2020 to last year's controversy surrounding trainer Bob Baffert and winner Medina Spirit, the Kentucky Derby has produced more than its fair share of drama in the past three years.

Much of the talk about trainers leading up to the 2022 Kentucky Derby has centered on the one who is not allowed to participate in the race this year. But while Bob Baffert serves his suspension following the disqualification of 2021 winner Medina Spirit, there is no shortage of storylines revolving around the trainers who will have horses in the 148th iteration of the race this year. Six trainers are in position for their first Kentucky Derby starts. Five others could have multiple horses in the field.

Will our next Kentucky Derby winner make history and claim the elusive Triple Crown? Only time will tell! It's anyones race!

WHO WON THE KENTUCKY DERBY 2021?

Medina Spirit won last year's Kentucky Derby by a half-length over Mandaloun, but the ultimate result could take years to decide due to appeals.

A week after the race, the trainer Bob Baffert revealed Medina Spirit tested positive for betamethasone, which is illegal when found in the blood on race day because it’s considered a possible performance-enhancer. Baffert’s camp, including owner Amr Zedan, filed an injunction against the KHRC in June 2021 in an effort to show the betamethasone detected in the horse’s blood samples was from a topical ointment and not an injection.

Medina Spirit's next start was the Preakness Stakes, the second leg in the Triple Crown. Baffert agreed to additional testing protocols for Medina Spirit in the days leading up to the race. Medina Spirit passed all of the pre-race drug tests administered to him and was given final clearance to run in the Preakness. After going off as the co-favorite at 5-2, Medina Spirit finished third in the race behind Rombauer and Midnight Bourbon, ending his bid for the Triple Crown.

On May 17, 2021 (two days after the Preakness ran), Bob Baffert was banned by the New York Racing Association (NYRA) from entering Medina Spirit or any of his other horses in the 2021 Belmont Stakes or any other race at Belmont Park. Baffert later sued the NYRA over his suspension and on July 14 the suspension was reversed by U. S. Federal District Court Judge Carol Bagley Amon. The Judge made her ruling based on the NYRA not allowing Baffert a forum to refute their claims and stated that (they the NYRA)..“had held no hearing — let alone a prompt one.”

On February 21, 2022, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission disqualified Medina Spirit from his first place finish in the Kentucky Derby and suspended trainer Bob Baffert for 90 days. Baffert's attorney, Clark Brewster, later announced that the ruling would be appealed. With this turn of events, Medina Spirit became only the third horse in the race's 147 year history to be disqualified after having first having been declared the winner. Subsequently the former second place horse Mandaloun was declared the winner.

WHAT HAPPENED TO MEDINA SPIRIT?

Medina Spirit collapsed and died at Santa Anita Park following a five furlong workout on December 6, 2021. His rider was unhurt. The horse's preliminary cause of death is a heart attack. Medina Spirit's trainer Bob Baffert stated that his barn was "devastated" by the news of Medina Spirit's death, and described the horse as a "member of the family."

According to a statement from Santa Anita Park, a team led by Senior Veterinarian Dr. Laurie Bohannon “immediately took blood, hair and urine samples from Medina Spirit. Those samples were sent to the California Horse Racing Board. A full necropsy, as per protocol in California, run by the University of California-Davis’ School of Veterinary Medicine will be performed to try and ascertain the exact cause of this sudden death.”

The CHRC will release the necropsy and toxicology studies at a later date.

THE HORSERACING INTEGRITY AND SAFETY ACT

There are huge changes coming to horse racing in 2022 which include establishing baseline rules and safety standards for the sport regardless of where races are being run. These unified rules should help regulate the sport in the manner it desperately needs. These will not take affect for the Triple Crown races until next year, but it's worth acknowledging!

"The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act was signed into law on Dec. 28, 2020, and focuses on ensuring the integrity of Thoroughbred horse racing and on the safety of Thoroughbred racehorses and jockeys by requiring national, uniform safety standards that include anti-doping and medication control and racetrack safety programs. Once the new program becomes operative on July 1, 2022, states will no longer have the power to regulate or enforce their own rules and they have no ability to opt out of the Authority's anti-doping and safety programs."

If this is something anyone wants to read more about, there is a lot of good information here.

POST POSITION DRAW

The post position draw has finished! Here is a list of the official Kentucky Derby lineup and their starting odds. You can click on this image to view it in its original size.

TWO TOP 20 POINT EARNERS DO NOT JOIN THE DERBY

It was heartbreak on Kentucky Derby entry morning for the one-eyed New York-bred gelding Un Ojo, who was not entered for Saturday's classic after emerging from his final work with a bruised hoof. Trainer Ricky Courville characterized the issue as a minor one with terrible timing. "He'll live to fight another day," said Courville, who would have been saddling his first Kentucky Derby starter. Un Ojo's defection allows Ethereal Road into the 20-horse Derby starting gate. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Luis Contreras will have the mount on Ethereal Road in the Derby.

Trainer Chad Brown announced Sunday morning Early Voting will not be entered in the Kentucky Derby. Brown previously had left the door open to enter the Derby but said he was leaning toward the Preakness for Early Voting, who finished second behind Mo Donegal in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial. It was just the third start in Early Voting’s career. Brown, seeking his first Kentucky Derby victory, has another top contender in Zandon. The departure of Early Voting opens the door for Pioneer of Medina to enter the Kentucky Derby field at No. 20 on the points list.

WHO'S THE FAVORITE?

Epicenter is currently, and expected to remain, the favorite.

Epicenter won the Louisiana Derby in late March, solidifying its spot as a likely Kentucky Derby front-runner. The colt has notched victories in four of its past five races, and he finished second in the other, so he's had plenty of past success.

Trainer Steve Asmussen has won the Preakness Stakes twice and the Belmont Stakes once, but the longtime trainer has never been victorious at the Kentucky Derby. Perhaps this could be the year he completes his personal Triple Crown. Epicenter has a former Derby champion as his jockey, too. Joel Ortiz won the race with Orb in 2013, and he'll look to ride to victory again this year.

Some other top horses to keep your eyes on are Zandon, White Abarrio, Messier, and Taiba, but any horse could steal the win from any of these favorites!

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE FIELD

The only female who was under consideration, Secret Oath, has opted for Friday's Kentucky Oaks for fillies.

All but four of the likely Derby starters born in Kentucky.

Two horses have never raced in the U.S.: the Japan-born Crown Pride and Summer is Tomorrow, the top two finishers in the UAE Derby in Dubai.

The most lightly raced horse in the field is Santa Anita Derby winner Taiba (two career starts), and the most experienced are Tiz the Bomb and Barber Road (eight starts each).

Fourteen of the probable entries have been bought at public auctions, for prices ranging from $15,000 (Barber Road) to $1.7 million (Taiba). Three — Zozos, Happy Jack, and Charge It — were bred by their owners.

There hasn’t been too much to report on for the Kentucky Derby since the post position draw. Instead, I will post some information about the Kentucky Oaks that ran earlier today!

P.S. There is less than 24 hours remaining to purchase draws for the Kentucky Derby! Our jackpot is up to 534,000,000 HPD!

WHAT IS THE KENTUCKY OAKS?

The Kentucky Oaks is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred fillies staged annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States. The race currently covers 1 1⁄8 miles (1,800 m) at Churchill Downs. The Kentucky Oaks is held on the Friday before the Kentucky Derby each year. The winner gets $750,000 of the $1,250,000 purse, and a large garland blanket of lilies, resulting in the nickname "Lillies for the Fillies." The first running of the Kentucky Oaks was on May 19, 1875, when Churchill Downs was known as the Louisville Jockey Club. The race was founded by Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. along with the Kentucky Derby.

On Kentucky Oaks Day, Churchill Downs Racetrack is a vision in pink as more than 100,000 guests are asked to incorporate pink into their attire in an effort to drive national attention to the fight against breast and ovarian cancer. One of the most beloved traditions of this 14-year effort is the Survivors Parade - a march of breast and ovarian cancer survivors that takes place on the historic racetrack prior to the running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks.

WHO WON THE KENTUCKY OAKS 2022?

Secret Oath charged from pack to grab the lead from Yuugiri and off favorite Nest by two lengths Friday in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, giving 86-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas his fifth Oaks win and first since 1990. As Secret Oath earned her fifth career win in eight starts, the Hall of Fame trainer got his first Grade 1 stakes win since the 2017 Hopeful Stakes with Sporting Chance at Saratoga.

Coming off a third-place run behind colts Cyberknife and Barber Road in the Arkansas Derby, the chestnut filly started the 14-horse race from the rail and was in the middle as Yuugiri set the pace through the final turn. Secret Oath steadily worked forward and moved into contention by the far turn before surging along the rail into the lead. Nest, the 2-1 favorite, made a push down the stretch but couldn't catch Secret Oath at the finish.

You can watch the official race replay
on YouTube here if you missed it!

In a truly shocking upset, Rich Strike is the winner of the 2022 Kentucky Derby. Rich Strike closed at 80-1 odds, the longest odds among all 20 horses and the second-biggest upset in the race's history. The first was Donerail, which won in 1913 after closing as a 91-1 longshot. As favorite Epicenter and Zandon dueled down the stretch, Rich Strike seemingly came out of nowhere in the race’s final strides and claimed the win.

Rich Strike made the Kentucky Derby field only because Ethereal Road pulled out on Friday, and Ethereal Road was in the race only because Un Ojo scratched earlier in the week. The long-shot has only raced seven times previously; it was only his second win in eight starts. He hadn’t won since his second race at Churchill Downs on Sept. 17. It was only his second time at Churchill Downs.

This is the first Kentucky Derby entry for trainer Eric Reed and first Derby ride for jockey Sonny Leon. Talk about beginner's luck! "This is the most unbelievable day ever," said owner Richard Dawson of Red TR-Racing, LLC. Reed, the trainer, said that even though the colt appeared to be improving with each race, the finish surprised him. "I fell down the paddock when he hit the wire," he said. " ... We're not supposed to be here."

Even though the Kentucky Derby is over, the excitement is far from over! Rich Strike now has two more races for a chance to complete one of the great achievements in American sports, the Triple Crown. Check back on 5/15 for the Preakness Stakes portion of TTCG!

The order of finish for the 148th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, was:

1. Rich Strike
2. Epicenter
3. Zandon
4. Simplification
5. Mo Donegal
6. Barber Road
7. Tawny Port
8. Smile Happy
9. Tiz the Bomb
10. Zozos

14. Happy Jack
15. Messier
16. White Abarrio

It was quite the race. The way Rich Strike's jockey manuvered the horse...it was amazing.

YOU CAN NOW PURCHASE DRAWS FOR THE PREAKNESS STAKES!
DRAWS CAN BE PURCHASED UNTIL
5/21/2022 6:00 PM EST.

Post Position Draw will occur on MONDAY 5/16/2022 AT 4:00 PM EST. This draw will finalize who will be participating and determine which position each horse will start from. This can be very important in determining how well a horse will run the race. For more information on the importantance of post position, click here! Morning-line (starting) odds for the race will be announced shortly after the draw. I will update the list of horses to reflect their post draws the same day.

Post time for the race is set for approximately 5/21/2022 AT APPROXIMATELY 6:50 PM EST. This is when the horses will begin making their way to the gate to start the race. NBC Sports will be providing comprehensive race coverage and analysis live on CNBC, NBC, NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app and Pea before, during and after the main event. Coverage begins at 2:00 PM EST on CNBC and moves over to NBC at 4:00 PM EST.

HOW OLD IS THE PREAKNESS STAKES? Two years before the Kentucky Derby was run for the first time, Pimlico introduced its new stakes race for three-year-olds, the Preakness, during its first-ever spring race meet in 1873. 2022 will be the 147th running of the race.

HOW DID THE PREAKNESS STAKES GET ITS NAME? Maryland governor Oden Bowie named the race in honor of the colt Preakness from Milton Holbrook Sanford's Preakness Stud farm in Preakness, New Jersey, who won the Dinner Party Stakes on the day Pimlico opened (October 25, 1870).

WHAT IS THE RACE DISTANCE? The Preakness is 1 3/16 miles or 9.5 furlongs, making it the shortest of the Triple Crown horse races. The Preakness has been run at seven different distances since its establishment, but the current length has been the standard since 1925.

WHICH HORSE HOLDS THE RECORD FOR THE FASTEST TIME AT THE CURRENT DISTANCE? Secretariat holds the record at this horse track with a time of 1:53 in 1973.

HAS THE PREAKNESS STAKES ALWAYS BEEN HELD TWO WEEKS AFTER THE KENTUCKY DERBY? Prior to 1931, there were 11 years in which the Preakness preceded the Kentucky Derby. In fact, there were actually two years, 1917 and 1922, where the two horse races were held on the same day. Due to COVID concerns in 2020, the Kentucky Derby ran on September 5th while the Preakness Stakes ran on October 3rd. The Belmont Stakes were run on June 20th in 2020 which means it was the first time in Triple Crown history that the Belmont was run first.

01. There have been 16 winning horses with names beginning with B (the most recent being Big Brown in 2008), 17 with C (Cloud Computing in 2017), and 14 with S (Shackleford in 2011).

02. In 1918, 26 horses entered the race, and it was run in two divisions, providing for two winners that year. Currently, the race is limited to 14 horses, but the only years the Preakness starting gate was filled to capacity were 2011, 2005, and 1992.

03. The first Preakness, held on May 27, 1873, drew seven starters. John Chamberlain's three-year-old, Survivor, collected the $2,050 winning purse by galloping home easily by 10 lengths. This was the largest margin of victory until 2004, when Smarty Jones won by 11 1/2 lengths.

04. No horse racing at odds greater than 23-1 has won the Preakness. In the 1975 Preakness Stakes, Master Derby won with 23.40-1 odds.

05. The trophy is so valuable, not even the winners are allowed to hold it. The mammoth 13-kilogram, solid silver Woodlawn Vase, created by Tiffany and Co. in 1860, is worth $1 million -- making it the most valuable trophy in American sports. The trophy now remains on permanent display at the Baltimore Museum of Art, with winners instead given a $30,000 replica trophy.

06. The winner is draped in a blanket of Viking poms. It’s usually called a blanket of black-eyed Susans, but since the Maryland state flower doesn’t bloom until June, the Viking poms play the part. Previously, daisies with the centers painted black were used.

07. As soon as the race is over, the 1.5-meter wide weather vane atop Pimlico Race Course's Old Clubhouse, featuring a miniature horse and jockey, is painted in the winning jockey's silks.

08. The favorite wins the Preakness more than half of the time. In 141 editions of the race, the favorite has emerged victorious 72 times.

09. The U.S. House of Representatives adjourned for the only time in history in 1877, to watch what was known as the "Great Race."

10. There have been 6 fillies who have won; Flocarline in 1903, Whimsical in 1906, Rhine Maiden in 1915, Nellie Morse in 1924, Rachel Alexandra in 2009, Swiss Skydiver in 2020.

KENTUCKY DERBY WINNER RICH STRIKE TO SKIP THE PREAKNESS STAKES

Just days after Rich Strike's improbable upset win in the Kentucky Derby, owner Rick Dawson announced that the horse would not compete in the upcoming Preakness Stakes. Rich Strike's withdrawal from Preakness on May 21 will end the horse's chances at going for the Triple Crown.

Rich Strike's spectacular victory in the Derby, in which he surged out of mid-pack to win at 80-1 odds, created a somewhat unforeseen scenario. The horse was not even listed to participate in the race 24 hours beforehand. The choice to skip the Preakness was made in the interest of rest and recovery for the horse, Dawson said.

"Obviously, with our tremendous effort and win in the Derby it's very, very tempting to alter our course & run in the Preakness at Pimlico, which would be a great honor for all our group," Dawson said. "However, after much discussion & consideration with my trainer, Eric Reed & a few others, we are going to stay with our plan of what's best for Ritchie is what's best for our group, and pass on running in the Preakness, and point toward the Belmont in approximately 5 weeks."

Future plans for Rich Strike were always contingent on what happened at the Kentucky Derby,  The original one, which the trainers are sticking to, is to give the horse rest and recovery ahead of the Belmont Stakes on June 11. Rich Strike becomes the first Kentucky Derby winner to not compete in the Preakness since 2019, when Country House did not enter after being awarded the Derby win following the disqualification of Maximum Security. With Rich Strike skipping Preakness, Justify will remain the most recent horse to have won the Triple Crown, doing so in 2018.

KENTUCKY OAKS WINNER SECRET OATH TAKES ON THE COLT-DOMINATED FIELD

Briland Farm's homebred Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath has been confirmed for the Preakness Stakes instead of the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.

This won't be the first time the filly has raced against some of the contenders in the Triple Crown races. Secret Oath finished third against the boys in the Arkansas Derby on 4/2/2022, beat only by Cyberknife and Barber Road. She came from the back of the pack, ran most of the final stretch in second place, before losing it to Barber Road at the very end. You can watch a replay of the Arkansas Derby here!

There have been six fillies to take home the Preakness in it’s 146-year history, and the latest in 2020 was Swiss Skydiver who pulled quite the upset at 11-1 odds. Since the Run for the Black-Eyed Susans moved to 9.5 furlongs in 1925, Skydiver’s 1:53.28 is the second fastest time ever in the Preakness.

UN OJO MAKES A RETURN AFTER SCRATCHING FROM DERBY

Cypress Creek Equine and Whispering Oaks Farm’s Un Ojo is set to put his best foot forward May 21 in the 147th Preakness Stakes. The gelding was forced to bypass the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve because of a minor but untimely foot bruise, but his team believes he will be ready for the second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico.

The one-eyed Un Ojo was withdrawn five days before the Derby, on the morning entries were taken. Ethereal Road stepped into Un Ojo's spot, only to scratch from the race as well the night before the Derby, which allowed Rich Strike to enter and ultimately claim the win.

ZANDON PASSES ON REMAINING TRIPLE CROWN RACES

After finishing third in the Kentucky Derby, Zandon will bypass the final two legs of the Triple Crown, skipping the Preakness and Belmont Stakes to point toward the Aug. 27 Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

In a phone interview, owner Jeff Drown of St. Cloud said his colt has been shipped to Belmont Park and "looks fantastic." Drown and trainer Chad Brown decided not to run in the May 21 Preakness because of the quick two-week turnaround after the Kentucky Derby. "If he had won the Derby, we'd be talking about the Preakness," Drown said. "But we didn't, so we'll make another decision. We love this horse a lot, and we think being very patient is the right decision. He's at Belmont now, and he's a happy horse. We'll just give him the time to hopefully do well in the other races.''

POST POSITION DRAW

The post position draw has finished! Here is a list of the official Preakness Stakes lineup and their starting odds. You can click on this image to view it in its original size.

UN OJO OUT OF PREAKNESS DUE TO REAGGRAVATED FOOT BRUISE

Un Ojo will not enter in the Preakness Stakes (G1) after the foot bruise that kept the one-eyed gelding out of the Kentucky Derby flared back up. “This morning his foot was a little warm again,” Louisiana-based trainer Ricky Courville said Monday morning by phone.

“The vets went over him, and he's not 100 percent. I'm dealing with the same thing. I guess the work kind of re-aggravated it.”

As with the Kentucky Derby, Un Ojo was withdrawn from the Preakness on the morning of entries. The New York-bred gelding, who won Oaklawn Park's Rebel Stakes at 75-1 odds, had a five-eighths mile work Saturday at Churchill Downs and seemed to come out of that training move in good order.

“He looked really good (Sunday) morning, and in the afternoon they went and checked him out. He was a tad off, the foot was a little warm,” said Courville, whose son, Clay, has been overseeing Un Ojo in Kentucky. “This morning it was the same.”

FENWICK LAST-MINUTE ENTRY FOR PREAKNESS

Villa Rosa Farm and Harlo Stable's Fenwick, trained by Kevin McKathan, was entered Monday morning for the Preakness Stakes. Fenwick most recently finished 11th in the Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland after an impressive front-running 5 ½-length victory at Tampa Bay Downs.

“We think he should have run well in the Blue Grass. He broke a step slow. He got cut off on the corner. The jock sat down on him for about 10 seconds. He's the kind of horse who needs to be free to run. He didn't get that chance,” said Villa Rosa Farm's Jeremia Rudan, an Ontario, Canada businessman. “I'm not saying he would have won, but if he had made that hole on the first turn, it might have been a different race. He's happy; he's sound. The way the Preakness is lining up, there's no reason not to give it a shot."

HAPPY JACK ASPIRES FOR A BETTER FINISH

Happy Jack is a horse for the people; he likes them. At least that's what trainer Doug O'Neill says about easy-going Happy Jack. “He is very sociable,” O'Neill said. “If no one is around, he will lay down. If someone is around, he will come right to the front of the stall. He really bonds with people.”

Happy Jack is a son of 2013 Preakness winner Oxbow. O'Neill said one of the traits of horses with Oxbow's lineage is their friendliness. Calumet Farm's homebred Happy Jack continues to train at Churchill Downs, where he remained after finishing 14th in the Kentucky Derby. The colt has been galloping daily. “He is very easy to train,” O'Neill said. “Very straightforward. He gets his gallop done and he doesn't fight. He goes back in his stall, eats and sleeps.”

In his last three starts, Happy Jack hasn't moved the needle much when it came to how much the betting public perceived him. When he goes into the starting gate at Pimlico in the Preakness, he won't be one of the favorites, either. One of these days, he is due to run a big one in a big race. Trainer Doug O'Neill hopes that day comes Saturday.

FRONT-RUNNING ARMAGNAC JOINS THE FIELD

Irad Ortiz Jr., a three-time Eclipse Award winner as champion jockey (2018-20), has signed on to ride Armagnac. Ortiz finished second in the 2021 Preakness aboard Midnight Bourbon. “We're excited,” managing partner Tom Ryan of SF Racing said. “The horse is well, and statistically we've got one of the best jockeys in the nation. Sometimes when you're healthy and well, if the opportunity is there you have to make a decision. Do I want to go large or [not]? It's coming together in a way that we feel comfortable with the challenge.”

Armagnac has raced exclusively at Santa Anita, making two starts since being transferred to trainer Tim Yakteen from the barn of Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who is serving a 90-day suspension that goes to July 2. The Quality Road colt was fourth in the Santa Anita Derby April 9 at odds of 72-1 prior to his recent 4 ¼-length allowance triumph, which was his first race without blinkers. Taiba, Messier and Happy Jack were the top 3 for the Santa Anita Derby; all of which also raced in the recent Kentucky Derby.

“We've always felt that he has talent. Obviously, this is an incredible step up in class, no question, but he has some racing under his belt,” Ryan said. “He's a fit, sound horse. Running him back in 13 days I suppose is an aggressive move but, that said, horses are coming back from the Derby in 14 days.”

“He had a good, confidence-building race last Sunday. I thought he got out there and enjoyed himself. You could see he was pricking his ears,” Ryan said. “The one thing that kind of swayed me was he really galloped out with energy. It wasn't a case that he just kind of got around there and won the race; the case was he won it and he kept on rolling. I just really felt good about that.”

SIMPLIFICATION THRIVING IN PIMLICO ENVIROMENT

Tami Bobo and Tristan De Meric's Simplification galloped 1 ½ miles early Saturday morning at Pimlico Race Course while sending positive signs to his connections that the son of Not This Time is sitting on a big race for the Preakness. “He really likes it here. He likes the track [surface],” said Jesus 'Chino' Prada, longtime assistant to the Florida-bred colt's trainer, Antonio Sano. “I think he likes it here more than he liked it at Churchill Downs.” Simplification is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill, where he closed from 15th with a very wide rally to finished 3 ½ lengths behind victorious Rich Strike.

Hall of Famer John Velazquez will ride Simplification for the first time next Saturday, replacing Jose Ortiz, who has a commitment to ride Chad Brown-trained Early Voting in the Preakness. “I think he can win the Preakness,” Prada said. “I read John Velazquez hasn't won the Preakness. He will win the Preakness with this horse.”

Simplification began his 3-year-old campaign with a front-running four-length victory in the one-turn-mile Mucho Macho Man at Gulfstream Park, where he went on to finish second in the Holy Bull; win the Fountain of Youth by 3 ½ lengths while rallying from off the pace; and finish third in the Florida Derby.

CREATIVE MINISTER PREPARES FOR STRONG COMPETITION

Creative Minister is a brilliantly marked son of Creative Cause. He might be light on experience with only three races heading into the Preakness, but he's handled those three races like a pro. After finishing a close second in his debut at Gulfstream Park, he registered 1 1/16-mile victories at Keeneland in the slop and Churchill Downs over a fast track.

“He's run over three difference racetracks and handled it all well,” trainer Kenny McPeek said. “I think he'll like the little added distance. Does he fit against the top 3-year-olds? I've worked him against (graded-stakes winners) Smile Happy and Rattle N Roll, and he holds his own every day."

“We understand the level of competition but think the race shapes up as pretty wide open”, says McPeek. “There is no doubt this is a measuring stick race but we’ve got some great owners (Fern Circle Stables, Back Racing LLC) and they deserve a shot at something like this. We have been swimming in the shallow waters. Now we are jumping into the deep end of the pool.”

AMBITIOUS SKIPPYLONGSTOCKING WILL GO THE DISTANCE

Skippylongstocking, a son of 2016 Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator, is coming off a third-place finish behind Mo Donegal and Early Voting in the April 9 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Skippylongstocking had won one of his first seven starts – his maiden-breaking triumph coming by 10 ½ lengths in a one-turn mile race at Gulfstream Park in September – before winning his first race around two turns March 2.

“The two mile-and-an-eighth races have definitely moved him forward. It was [jockey] Junior Alvarado's recommendation after he ran the one-turn mile race before and stopped. He said 'Try him two turns and longer. It might be a better fit.' He was 100 percent spot-on. He ran two really good races,” Joseph said.

The 1 3/16-mile distance of the Preakness isn't a concern for the trainer of the son of 2016 Preakness winner Exaggerator. “I think the distance is going to help him, but obviously he's going to face quality horses like Epicenter and the Chad Brown one that beat him in the Wood [Early Voting],” Joseph said. “We're just taking a chance. We feel the distance is going to help him. We'll hope for the best.”

Medina Spirit lost the Kentucky Derby win posthumously, then? So fascinating to read all these facts and trivia. Thanks, Prynne! How did you become so acquainted with the ins and outs of Derby knowledge and proceedings?
