Just a cute little pumpkin story. :P

Once upon a time there was a sad little pumpkin who lived in a great big field full of other pumkins. The other pumpkin were all big and round and the right shade of orange but the little pumpkin was tiny and misshapen and a light, pale orange. When the farmer came through the field to check on his crops he would stop an admire how big the others were but never seemed to notice the littlest one. When the field was opened up for all the families to come and pick one out and take lots of pictures. One by one the biggest and prettiest pumpkins are taken to made into jack-o-laterns or pies or so many other things but the little pumpkin could not be a jack-o-latern or pie. Day in and day out he was looked over and each day he got sadder and sadder. But one day into the field came a family with a stumbling little toddler who was so excited for the adventure ahead. As he searched all around, he didn't seem interested in the big pretty pumpkins insead he kept looking until he spotted the little pumkin sitting all alone. "Mommy, Mommy! I want this one!" He said as he picked up the little pumpkin. "But what about these big ones over here? Look how big and orange they are!" His mother said gesturing all around. "No this one!" He said with a huff. With a sigh his mother called out to the farmer. "How much for this little one?" she said. "That little thing? Really?" The farmer questioned. With a shrug she just gestured to the smile on the little boys face. "You can just take it. No charge." He said. She nodded with a thank you and turned to her son. "Come along then." He clutched his little pumpkin close to his chest and headed out with his mother. In the car he strapped his pumpkin in with a seatbelt before crawling into his carseat. As they drove away the little pumpkin had a big smile on his face because he was not sad anymore. He had been choosen and that's all he had ever wanted.

One Halloween night my friends and I were on our way across town to where the best houses were giving out candy. No toothbrushes or off-brand candy for us this year, oh no. We were heading to the king sized candy bars! It was already getting late, and the sky was dark. My two best friends on either side of me, clutching our pillow cases to put our candy into, and trying to hurry to get in as much trick-or-treating as possible before we had to go back home.

“Hey, isn’t that the cemetery up ahead?” Lola, to my right, asked.

“Ooh, you’re right! I forgot. How fun, on Halloween! Let’s go in. Just for a minute; pleaseee?” Sophie begged from my left.

“Fine,” I gave in after only a moment. Candy was great, but there was something about a cemetery on a dark Halloween night that just gave me goose bumps. And if it was scary, then I just had to do it.

As we began to cross the cemetery lawn, on our way to the nearest group of graves, it began to drizzle. I pulled my witch’s cape closer to my body, glad that I had my long hat. Lola, dressed as a cat, was already losing a little of her dark cat’s nose that we had carefully painted on earlier.

“What was that?” Sophie squealed, stopping abruptly.

“What was what?” I asked, eyes wide.

“There, just behind the headstone,” she pointed.

I craned my head. “I don’t see anything,” I complained.

“I thought I did, but- oh, there!” Lola jumped.

“Oh my god.” I could hardly take my eyes off of it.

Rising from the ground behind the nearest headstone, a whispy white figure was coming out of the ground.

We didn’t even have to talk. We grabbed each other’s hands and ran forward, just in time to see the – well, it had to be – ghost turn around and take in its surroundings.

I grabbed my cell phone from my pocket and began to take pictures. Who cares about candy, no one else could beat a real life ghost story!

“Look at it, look at it!” Sophie said breathlessly.

The figure was now becoming slightly more substantial before our eyes. It appeared to be a boy about our age. We could still see through him, but he looked like he was walking now, not just floating above the ground.

He was coming closer.

“Hi, my name’s Lloyd. Can I go trick-or-treating with you?”

And that’s the story of how I went trick-or-treating with my two best friends and a ghost.

So mine is a bit... creepy.  I blame a friend of mine, who swears her youngest daughter knows the name of her oldest (who died very young) even though they've never discussed it.... anyhow!  Heres mine:

My husband and I have been waiting with excitement to hear our daughter’s first words.  This milestone, this amazing part of our child’s life, and we have been waiting so long to feel our hearts soar with joy.

She coos and gurgles and smiles her lovely smile.

We joke about what she will say and say the silly things all parents say to try to goad her into gracing us with just a simple word.  Something.  Anything.

“Mommy loves you.”

“Daddy’s baby girl!”

“Say mommy.  Mommy.  Momma!”

All the books say she should have been speaking by now – a few words, even.  We worry, after all, that there’s something wrong with her.  She smiles her beautiful smile at us, bats her stunning eyes – hazel like her daddy.  But sometimes…

Sometimes she stares at nothing.  And she coos, like there’s something there.

Sometimes she goes completely quiet.  Like even breathing is too much for her.

The doctor says not to worry.  That all babies develop at their own rate.  That our darling, our little sweetheart, she will speak when she is ready.  My husband thinks I worry too much.

I’m staying home with her, as usual, while my husband is at work.   She’s doing it again, looking at nothing and babbling away as if she’s gabbing away to her best friend.

She giggles, and I turn, smiling at her because the sound – so like the sound I imagine an angel makes – makes me laugh as well.

“What are you doing, you silly goose.  Who are you talking to?”

That when it happens.  Her first word.  The word that should make my heart soar and my pride overflow.  The word that should be mommy or daddy of flowers or something wonderful.

She says, eyes shining with joy, “Lee”

My heart goes cold.

Lee, you see, is her twin brother – the darling little boy that I brought into the world.  But unlike Sarah, who is beautiful and warm and wonderful… Lee was cold.  Dark.  Gone before his time. Dead before he smiled, laughed… before he spoke his first words.  Lee was a stillborn.

She says it again, “Lee,” and she giggles, pointing to the chair behind me.

I scream.

Yours, Neke, reminds me of those 2 sentence horror stories. I'd post them here, but they're maybe not all HP-appropriate, haha.
