@trig- I honestly don't know much about it, but in my researches this morning: although it's a genetic recessive trait (and can be thrown from 2 non-laced parents), as of 2013, there wasn't a known testable component for it. Per the Namibia Wild Horses foundation, it "seems to be an inherited gene first observed in Namibia on Emil Kreplin's horses at the Kubub stud...passed on to progeny from either sire or dam...almost imperciptible in foals, it tends to 'grow' as the horse reaches adulthood" - the date range around the Kubub stud was early 1900's I think, so if present in american Mustangs, that leads me to think there's a good possibility it could be a much more primitive trait. Maybe. other than that, there isn't a whole lot of in-depth information that I could easily find! |
