When you read that title, I'm sure you were expecting some weird horse-tiger combo, but alas, these are not some genetic cat horse hybrid but a beautiful gaited breed! 

Tiger horses can be traced back to ancient China but have only been recognized with their own registry in the last two decades. They are average size horses and typically max out height around 16 hands. The name may suggest that these horses have stripes but their defining characteristic is actually their SPOTS! They can have white, black, or bay base coats and the Lp Lp gene results in a myriad of leopard patterns including molted, fros, snowflake, varnish, roan, speckled, blanked, leopard, and the rear few spot leopard referred to as "ghost horses". 

One of the most sought-after characteristics of Tiger horses is their tait. Their gait, called the Indian Shuffle, consists of moving two lateral sets of legs nearly in unison. The hind leg steps down an instant before the front leg and it is a form of a stepping pace. It is a four-beat gait similar to a pace but much smoother. Their gait is often called an amble or shuffle due to its smooth field. Because of this, they are often used as trail mounts. 

The tiger horse registry is mentioned in several articles and posts by other gaited registries and magazines but the website is currently down. The Gaited Horse magazine states that a video of the horse's gait must be submitted along with DNA testing for the Tiger Horse registry. Tiger horses can also be cross-registered with gaited registries such as the Pleasure Saddle Horse Registry.
