**CAUTION - TRIGGER WARNING** Beauty was a Welch X Arab pony I took in as a rescue about a year ago. She was nothing but a bag of bones (literally) when I got her. She had foundered several times before and needed serious help. Before I even knew it, I'd be giving her such a better home. The only thing we really knew about this mare was that she was bred on a farm with a LOT of land (somewhere around 200+ acres) and was only grazing. Then something happened to her owners and she fell into the hands of an elderly couple. The wife of his older couple had passed leaving the man to care for her - we were told that this is when her health rapidly declined due to the fact he had he didn't have the land nor the knowledge to care for her. He would chuck corn cobs over the fence for her to eat. Poor girl! One of my friends came across her and took her in. I do give her props for rescuing her. She reached out to me and asked if I wanted to take her in because she knew nothing about animals (she did ask me what to feed her and I advised her on what to give her). A couple weeks after the initial message, she messages me again and really pleaded for me to take her in... I did. I was hesitant at first because I know how much money it takes to get a horse/pony back on their feet... but I did it... and we did it. She trailered her over to my property and I put her out in the front pasture. The only thing I thought of what those horse skeletons people use at halloween. That is literally how bad she looked. My mom and I got her the works, farrier - mineral block - hay - weight gain- proper feeding schedule (twice a day). Within a month and a half she had gained most of all her weight back. She was steady for a few months then had took another decline in health. We figured out she had been eating acorns which are highly toxic to horses. Not sure as to why as she had hay and ample amount of food. We of course fixed her up and got her back to her normal personality. From this point forward though - she wouldn't gain weight. We did special diets, alfalfa hay. A few days ago I noticed something was off in her. Her balance was off - she would literally bump into you and follow you so close she could be standing on top of you. I had almost given the idea she was blind. I gave her meds (bute/electrolytes) and hoped we could recover her again. This morning (4/21) I came out to see she how she was and saw she had went down and couldn't get up. She was too close to the wall to be able to get up herself. I went out and tried to assist her, but she didn't have the energy. I called the vet around 08:30-9am and no one would be able to get to her until after lunch. I told them it was an emergency. I dont know how long she had been down but everyone knows that horses can't be down for long periods of time (usually anything after 3 consecutive hours). No matter what I told them, the answer was still they'd be out in 3-3.5 hours. After getting off the phone with them my heart sank because I knew what was in store.... I tried hard to get her up but it was only myself and I had to try my best to not let my son near her or see. I called my gma out and she took over watching my son. My mom came out after as well. She kept getting worse. Thrashing about, stiffening up, sweating, fast heartbeat, muscle spasms and eye twitching. I couldn't take it anymore. Something had to be done. RIP Beauty. Sweet, sweet girl. |

Today, I finally got her buried. It took an entire day but now she can finally rest in peace. Two elder (70-80s) came out and buried her for me. I am so thankful for them. It's made me realize that in this world people are only here for self gain and money. It's hard to come by people who can help if they have the means to. I guess I am part of the older generation that if you can help do it. Cause you never know you what will happen in the future. But at least now she can rest in peace and I feel better knowing she can. |

Thank you both. It really was sure a hard thing to figure out, because your heart says one thing and your mind says another. I had to listen to my head this time, as much as I wanted to see if there was a chance of survival... I just ruled it out due to the spasms, thrashing and eye twitching. I had messaged my friend who is a vet tech and she even said it looked nuerological and also wondered if she had EPM. She lost her horse to that a few years ago and had a HORRIBLE experience with putting her down. I hated it for her...
I only had Beauty about a year and a half, but I do feel as if she did have a better life with me. Food every day - friends to play with (even if they did pick on her sometimes) and lots of attention from me and my little boy. My mother and I tried so hard to do what we could for her. Ya know? I've been struggling with my thoughts of "I could have done this... I should have tried this..." when in reality one can really only do so much.
I am just so relieved she is now in bigger and greener pastures. She is now roaming with our "Heart Horses" in Heaven! Chief - Whiskey - Celadon

I am so very sorry, Dakiti. You absolutely did the right thing -- it's so easy to go down the could have/should have rabbithole, but the reality is that you did everything that you could for her, up until the end with your very last act of kindness. You can see by looking at her that she was happy and well loved. Such a beautiful girl with the kindest, softest eyes. Thank you for being able to give that to her. Sending hugs and all of my thoughts❤️ |
