Rest in Peace Candy Girl

My facebook HP friends already know, but after a day of issues my 24 year old mare Candy passed. The horses had all been in the barn for two and a half days due to temps and weather, so when they were let out they all went for it. Candy fell and it sounded like she popped. People came out and helped her get up, she had a knot the size of a fist on her side by her left front leg. We honestly thought it was colic so we started walking her. Called the vet, played phone tag with the poor boy. We stopped walking and led her to water and made her drink and her gums were white, the knot softer but the size of a football. When he arrived, they were slightly pinker. He examined her. Eric thinks that one of the others kicked her and the booboo hematomaed. Gave her the clean up, gave her electrolytes. Before he left, he gave us antibiotics for her every 8 hours and said if it got bigger in the morning, that's bad news. We put her back in the stall with heat lamps and food where she perked up and looked livelier. I go over at 4 Sunday (yesterday) to feed the horses and I open the barn and shes got her head over the door waiting. I go to touch her, and she's sweaty like its summer and I just ran her. I go to feed the others, and she starts pacing so we let her out. The mare who hates the rain goes waddling around in the rain finding a place to lie down. Her back right leg seemed to have a hard time holding weight, everytime she put weight on it it shook uncontrollably. The knot is now the size of a massive watermelon and has swollen the left side of her chest and spread to her last rib. We bring her under the awning (with a lot of work, even when she's sick she's bullheaded) and she lies for the first time there. Tried offering her food again, wouldn't take it. At this point she was cold cold so we hade her get up and she goes back out in the rain and lies down. We haul her up and bring her in the barn. She starts pacing and lying and standing. She finally takes a mouthful of hay and we mutually decide to leave her alone. We go back at 5:40 and she is lying down with her head under the divider banging it. She stopped when we arrived, we gave her her last shot. Shortly after she starts gasping for breath and then she goes. It's almost like she wanted to say goodbye before she went, we were there making it as comfortable for her as we could, petting and brushing till the end. If it happened again, I still wouldntve shot her to get it over with, she was fighting until the end like I knew she always would. We are left with her obnoxiously sassy daughter Cassidy, who we may or may not breed in hopes to calm her down. I honestly think it was Cassidy who kicked Candy, all factors point to her. The geldings don't dare even mess with momma. When momma first fell, Cassidy was screaming like I've never heard, and when she passed Cassidy was watching and started freaking. Ah well. Candy would have been 25 in May, she still made it to 24 which is crazy! She's in a much better place now, she will be missed by all the girls she taught how to ride. Lovely Candy Star.

Thank you all. We certainly miss her, but its tearing Cassidy up. The once obnoxious sassy made now wants cuddles and won't eat unless led to food, she's getting better though. |
