Australian riding pony

» I think...

ARPs are cute as a button, beautiful ponies in the hack ring and pony club events. I used to breed them on HL and I’d love the chance to breed them here on HP as well :D

» ARP source from Wikipedia

The Australian Riding Pony is a breed of pony developed in Australia since the 1970s. It has been greatly influenced by the British Riding Pony, the Thoroughbred and Arabian bloodlines.

These ponies are small copies of elegant show hacks, developed from English Riding Pony bloodlines. They range in height from 12.2 to 14.2 hands (50 to 58 inches, 127 to 147 cm) in contrast to the Australian Pony breed, which does not exceed 14 hands (56 inches, 142 cm). Australian Riding Ponies have a free-flowing, lower action than many of the older pony breeds. Australian Riding Ponies are of one of the solid colors, with small heads and ears.

The Australian Riding Pony Stud Book Society was formed in about 1980 in the wake of interest aroused in the Riding Ponies that were shown in several Royal Shows. A foundation section was formed which required at least three crosses of animals from approved breeds before a pony could be entered in Section A. Originally there were four sections, but with the foundation firmly established some have been finished. Nowadays most of the major British and New Zealand bloodlines are represented in the Australian Riding Ponies.

Today, the pony is mainly used as a children's show mount and for small adult riders. They compete in dressage, show jumping, combined driving, gymkhana, mounted games, and horse shows.

» Karma Park  just one example of a show home with these beautiful pons, check them out

» I checked…

With Koni whether they should be an accepted cross breed or a new breed added - because of how many breeds influenced the ARP the decision is that they are to be a new breed.

Please can we get another four hands up (or more!!) to make 5 interested parties in breeding them ?

I’d love to take them on and start with 20, possibly 40!

I am not taking on any more breeds, but can I just say how much I would LOVE to see these little firecrackers back in the game. I rode my ARP Pebbles from primary school right through to high school and took home a plethora of mounted games championship ribbons, and so they have a special place in my heart. They are such a versatile little breed, and such a credit to the Australian show circuit.

Good luck guys!

Question...

Reading about these guys on the page you linked for the Riding Pony Stud Book Society...are they ACTUALLY a breed? Or a type?

https://www.rpsbs.com.au/breed-standard/

"The Riding Pony is one of the few examples of a planned exercise to breed a type for a particular purpose. It cannot be considered in genetic terms a breed but rather a refined type."

and

"In other words the Riding Pony is essentially a fixed cross or composite of several breeds."

Not sure if this is helpful or not but they do seem to be listed on the Australian Pony Stud Book Society under their crossbreed registers

Sorry just seeing these now

yes they are a cross influenced by many breeds, I think making them too hard to be a straight cross breed on HP because I wasn't too sure either which I should be pitching for

they're definitely a staple in our show rings here xD

I can confirm, they are a registered breed here in Australia. They were developed as a result of crossbreeding, but the breed was registered as 'Australian Riding Pony' so long as they fit a particular criteria.
I also know that during my time competing on my ARP, some of my EFA points could only be scored through registered breed classes, and so my ARP could only be entered in these, alongside the general hacking/3DE events.

I hope that helps!
