I'm thinking about starting a project to get a dog to 5mill points, but I've never actually done that before so I'm having a hard time figuring out how much money I'll need for this project, and therefore how much to save up before I start.

I know lots of people have taken on similar projects like this, so I just wanted to see if anyone would be able to ballpark around how much HP money a project like this would cost? :)

I also am working on saving for a project.  The best I've come up is to calculate how much it would cost to use only private shows, and then maybe double that to allow in for tickets?  I haven't done math yet with the recent prices, but  at one point, I had calculated around 1 billion, but I don't remember if that was for just private shows, or both shows and tickets.

If you are buying tickets it can cost up to 2 billion HPD, just private shows alone it can be 500 million-1 billion HPD. :)

What breed have you chosen?

not sure about dogs but horses 90 private shows a week gets 5million pts by retirement with NO tickets...

I think dogs only get to around 4 mil with private shows only, because they have a shorter amount of time to gain points unfortunately.

One show spot for dogs is going for around 200k at the moment which is pretty dirt cheap haha :p You could train the dog and it's mate in 90 private shows a week for just over 500 million. You also need to factor in the cost of buying the extra energy, either 10 mil per week via the regular shop, or 180 mil in the cash shop.

Doing a rough calculation using 3000 points per show (I find this estimate is usually on the low side since it doesn't factor in entrance points), you'd have 3780000 points from just shows, meaning you need to budget for around 1220000 points to gain with tickets. This means you need around 325 sets of tickets, which based on the current ticket prices (around 200k) means you'd need an additional 325 mil.

So bare minimum I'd say save up 825-850 mil, 1 bil if you want to get on the top 25 dog rankings :)

It would definitely be a wolf project, that's just my breed lol. Honestly if I could keep it at 1bill I think it'd be doable!
