So Sierra went into heat last month and, no matter how hard we tried, Kaiser gott around us to try and "tag" her. Well obviously we don't need that right now because puppies would have been born a moth or less before Kable was born and that just sounds like the worst situation ever. So we quickly called the vet and got her scheduled to be fixed for this morning, he wanted to wait a month after she was in heat for her safety, and a few minutes ago he called to say the surgery went fine and the she had been pregnant... with 10 PUPPIES!?!? Holy cow would that have been a nightmare... Don't get me wrong we feel bad we had to do it like this but there is no way I was going to juggle a newborn and that many puppies that would get to be so big. But it's just amazing to us that 2 dogs who have never had puppies, and one still a puppy himself, were able to make 10. o.o

Male dogs will do everything they can to get at a female in heat.. if given the chance. Chloe's still unaltered and she's 5 now and all I ever do during her heats is keep her separated from any male dogs we have. All I do is keep them separated by room and alternate them for family time.

It's good that you got her fixed though, so this doesn't happen again. 10 puppies is HUGE for a maiden girl and if she was allowed to carry to term and deliver, she likely would have needed assistance which can be very pricey depending on the situation.

I hope she is recovering well though!

no joke! We did everything from underwear and using gates and he was still able to do that. my husband was shocked by that number of course but I was more shocked cause it was a first. My females first are on the smaller side from what I have seen.

We just picked her up and she is doing good. She is feeling pretty sleepy since she got a 24 hour pain killer.

Aww. I understand why you had to do it, but RIP puppies. :(

Unfortunately, dogs won't be stopped by underwear and gates, as you are now aware.. They literally need to be physically separated and not allowed near each other AT ALL while the female is in heat. Like in separate rooms behind doors that cannot be opened. Dogs are very determined when they need to be. (I know this no longer applies to you, but in case anyone else in a similar situation reads it!)

It's a really sucky situation, but at least now that she's been spayed, it won't happen again. Hopefully she recovers quickly :)

Yeah we just didn't like the idea of locking her in a room all alone :/ And he was extreamly persistant. So our hands were tied.

The vet's daughter is studying to be a vet so she often helps with sugerys and todays was apparently difficult for her as she had never had to remove pups before. We felt bad but he said it was a good lesson for her. He said they were about less than an inch long.

We are looking on the bright side of things because ow we know when we are ready to breed him he will be able to get the job done.

I lock Chloe in a room on her own when she's in heat. It's no big deal to her. She is alternated with the boys for family time. The boys are persistent as are most boys around a female in heat, but when I tell them to go away they just... go away.

Trying to have puppies and babies at once is incredibly difficult - especially as puppies grow incredibly fast and all need home in a short period of time.  Sad, yes, but what's done is done and seem to be the best option.

That being said... they will do anything, so Ash is 100% right in the idea of full separation. :)
