So i've been looking for a new bird to add to my flock, and after keeping Cockatiels for most of my life and having a Conure for a couple years, I decided i'm ready to branch out and get something a bit bigger. I WAS in the market for an Indian Ringneck but nobody seems to have any young birds around here being almost Winter and all. So I was surfing the pet pages last night and I came across an ad for a handraised Rainbow Lorikeet located in the next town over. So I called the lady and arranged to go visit today.

Turns out she had two, brother and sister, and they were quite close and Danny didn't like the idea of separating them. So we came home with both of them XD



She hasn't had them DNA tested so she's not 100% sure, but she thinks the one closest to the camera is a boy and the other is a girl. They hatched on the 13th and 14th of February so they're only approx 3 months old. They're weaned and on adult food (HUGE PLUS) and they're very tame. They hate me right now because i'm the big brute that shoved them in a box and took them away from their home, but they'll come around. After some protesting and arguing they both stepped up on to my hand and allowed me to put them in their cage (which is very bare right now but is only a temporary holding cage until their proper cage is set up).

I'm so happy! I love them already. They're such little characters! I'm gonna have them DNA tested so I know for sure who is what, but for now i'm just going to assume they're a boy and girl. They don't have names yet and that is going to be the hardest part I think lol. NAMING IS SO HARD.

Danny said they're my early early birthday present haha XD (my birthday is in september)

how trainable are they? Like... What's the range of what they can be taught? Or are you talking just some basic obedience stuff?

I seriously thought about bonnie & clyde but i'm not 100% sold on clyde lmao.
I've just gone for random names instead of couples because I couldn't find anything I loved, so I'm going with Jade for the female (jade green :P) and possibly Oscar for the male (Oscar the Grouch haha). Plus they're relatively easy to say so teaching them to say their names will hopefully be pretty easy. I think i'll just loosely go with oscar & jade until I have them DNA tested so I know for sure lol what genders they are lol. Taking samples is going to be brutal. They acted like we were murdering them when we clipped their wings.

Chao, they can be taught a huge range of stuff! Talking, dancing, tricks and even potty training (which I plan to do because these guys literally projectile poop on a 45 degree angle).

To give you an idea on how easy they can be to train, tonight I tried to teach Oscar (trying it out.. Lol) to spin around because it's one of the most basic starter tricks there is, and Jade was watching us from a short distance and within a couple of minutes she waddled over to us and started doing it :P

For a good while Jade wouldn't step up and she'd avoid me when I would ask her to step up. With the help of a syringe full of apple juice she now steps up like a pro lol! Oscar has always been good for stepping up and he'll do it without being asked (aka he'll invite himself into your personal bubble), but Jade has always been more 'wary' I guess, bless her, but she has started to open up to me < 3
