So we lost Jade to a spider bite last week :( I put them outside in the morning and I went to check on them a couple hours later and they were fine, and an hour or so after that I went out to give them all some fruit and Jade had passed away. There was a white tail spider on the wall behind their cage, so I am assuming that was the cause. My poor baby :(

But Oscar is still with us. He was understandably depressed for a day or two afterwards, but he's perked back up to his usual happy self now. Here are some recent photos

His beak is all orange now! He's growing up fast. I'm currently teaching him to dance and spin around. And he can say "hi" and we're working on teaching him to say his name :)

That's horrible about jade. Will Oscar be ok without the second bird there?

He's growing up absolutely beautiful though. I was never that into birds but seeing all your posts gives me a whole new appreciation.

He will be fine. He was a bit depressed for a couple of days afterwards (we both were) but he's bounced back now and as long as he keeps getting all the loves like he is now he'll be ok haha :P

Rainbow Lorikeets are fairly monogamous and choose one partner, but if they lose a mate they will grieve for a while and then seek out a new mate when breeding season came along. Oscar and Jade were siblings and still just babies (just turned 4 months) so it was companionship that they got from eachother rather than a "lets make babies" relationship. It's up to us now to give him the companionship he got from her, which isn't hard because they spent a good deal of their time with us anyway.

Birds are crazy smart. Google "rainbow lorikeet playing" and just enjoy. They say rainbow lorikeets are the clowns of the bird world, but it's something you can't truly appreciate until you see it, and it's so freakin cute lol.
