I didn't know if I was going to use a tablet very often so I just bought a cheapie off of Amazon.  If you aren't looking to spend a whole lot of money this one has been great for me:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OBZRPU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

It comes with software, and is pressure sensitive which is nice.  ☺  I know it shows Amazon doesn't have it in stock, but you might check other places. :P

Pretty much any tablet in the Wacom Intuous series is a great tablet to start with!

Any Wacom is going to be a safe bet. They're the industry leaders in graphics tablets and it shows.

I've also heard good things about the monoprice tablets. They're supposedly comparable to wacom for a fraction of the price. The only issue is that the stylus needs batteries.

The Wacom Bamboo Pen and touch tablets are great, I started with a small one and now I have a much bigger one.  They are nice and affordable.. I wouldn't get an expensive one unless you know you want to go more into graphic design and such.

I'd be sure to read all the reviews I could find. Cheap isn't always better, I'm sure you can find something of a decent quality for a fair amount! Good luck in your search :D

Wacom is definitely the industry leader.

Monoprice tablets are good, but they aren't made the same, and over time, it shows.  I use a monoprice, and while it functions, I cannot use it for manes/tails/etc. any longer, because the tablet itself is scratched up and the pen "bounces".  When I called support on this, it is an issue they know of is the only response I got.  Granted, I paid a whopping 30 bucks, so I dont really cry over it.
