(Fred The Wonderhorse is what my dad calls Freddy :p)

We cut today! Fred cuts twice a year - on New Year's and on Memorial Day. New Year's cutting was canceled because of rain, so this is the firs time Freddy has cut in over a year. It is also the first time he has been loped undersaddle in about a month. He was good! Only tried to buck me off twice! XD

(Either way, I've gone down a pants size and a half in the past four months so nanana boo boo even if you were gonna make one, not gonna work! #selfappreciation)

But first! Look how cute he looks in Jackson's headstall!




Cow is far away from us and out of shot, but look how intense he gets, haha
(The farther you are from the cow, the slower you have to go in order to keep up with the cow, especially in a round arena, so beginners/people who have old angry geldings tend to stay a bit farther away.People who show and practice regularly are like three inches from the cow :p)


My tongue is out like a nerd, but Fred looks so cute and in frame. ^.^


Oh, and btw...New Year's and Memorial Day Cutting is open to anyone who wants to give it a try!

And that TB is hilarious. He looks so out of place. I heard the walkers at my barn went to an open cutting event and  The big fancy show ring boy completely lost his mind because he just did not cow. Obie is such a male model and it showed.

Hahahaha, I feel like me on Bella would look as out of place as those OTTBs, but it's awesome those guys get to experience something new! She also hates cows so... that could be an issue.

You and Fred look great Overture! Looks like you guys had fun, thought dittoing Zad's question on why you only get to do this twice a year! Is it his age?

We only do this twice a year for a couple reasons - a.) twice a year is when the cutting trainer waves her cow fee. Obviously, to have cows, you gotta feed cows, and hay isn't cheap. So there is a $40 use fee every time you want to play with cows, plus her usual lesson fee if you wanted to get a lesson. B.) Fred is a bit older now. He also has some arthritis and about 15 years of being a showed reined cow horse under his belt, so he isn't the most youthful moving animal around! Fred is always welcome to go in and turn back, or help move the cows around and make sure they stay in the center for the person cutting, which Freddy loves and usually on requires him to walk or jog, but cutting is hard on an old boy. I'd rather cut twice a year for the next six years than more often for a year or two before he's too old. If that makes sense haha

(If it makes you feel better, the two women on the OTTBs are my good friends so I didn't post photos of their horses bucking and running from the cows, but I totally have pictures of it and they totally did haha)

Hahaha. She doesn't buck but there would be some impressive half-passes and turning on the haunches. Possibly some little bounces on the front feet. She's highly opinionated! 

Looks like fun! That would totally be me in the English saddle, I can't ride Western to save my life, so I just trail ride and do everything huntseat, haha.

Both you and Fred look great! Such a pretty frame. Also, that bay OTTB is gorgeous. Do want!

Looks like fun! I'm much more comfortable in an English saddle be it for Saddle Seat or Huntseat, but would love to give that a try one day! :D

I have been working Fred a bit more as he has been moving really well.
"Working more" for Freddy means 15 minutes of work on a line or light ride three times a week instead of once every other week haha.
He seems to be really enjoying getting back to doing a little bit more stuff. he really does love to work. One of the great things about cow horses - they like their job. ^.^

Anyway, here are some photos of him working in the round pen. He hadn't been worked in a round pen with a saddle on in maybe three years haha. He was very excited :p
