I'm sat eating my way through my bag of Apple Pie flavored popcorn (weird, I know..) and I began to wonder how others identify their generations.

For example, I have always thought that a store-bought horse or dog is my first generation, and their offspring the second, and theirs the third and so on and so forth. Some people dismiss the store animals and then identify their first generation as the offspring of the stores.

I don't think there's necessarily any right or wrong way to look at it, but I'm just curious!

What do you guys think? :)

I am rather new to the whole "Generation" thing.

However, I am counting my original set of store bought horses to be generation 1. Currently I am working on generation 3!

Will be interested to see what others think!

I've always considered my store to be generation 1. And if I breed a store with a lined horse, I still consider the foal the next continuing generation as well.

For me, I have bred lines both ways: counting stores as a G1 and moving forward and exempting the stores as just foundation with their babies being considered the first generation. I'm most comfortable with just calling the stores "foundation lines" and just making them known as the birth or founder of a line; for example, with my GV Wicked Medicine, I'm just calling him a foundation line but any foals he sires throughout his life will be counted as G1 since they're the actual first generation from the foundations.  Then the G1 foals from Medicine would be counted as G2 and keeping to that pattern.

But back in 2014 - 2015 when I bred my Sin City Vegas AQH lines, I counted the stores the same way as Panthera and LadySword; the stores were considered a G1 and their babies were considered a G2 that went on from there. After I got to G3, I started feeling confused and just unhappy with the pedigree set-up so now I no longer count stores as a generation.

I always count the first/foundation stores as first generation and their offspring second gen.

Same...

Store lined is 1st gen/foundation

Babies from that is 2nd gen.

The 1st foundation set was G1 and then continuing on from there. I use store mates every generation, but one parent always has the extended line so the foal from the store x lined pair is still continuing the generations even if from one side...if that makes any sense.

I also consider my stores generation one, then the foal geneartion two. When I take that foal and buy it a store mate, breed them I consider the foal from the Gen 2 and store to be Gen 3 :]

I also count my stores as 1st gen.
Once on HL I was partnered with someone who counted her first set of pups/foals as first generation instead of the stores and it confused the heck out of me because we were never on the same page regarding what generation we were up to.

Yep, store horses are always G1 for me, too.

I'm like Audacious, too. A foal born from a store and a lined horse, say 4th gen, is a 5th generation horse.

I always count the stores as generation one. They're labeled as f0 though. I can't remember why but it had something to do with tracking genetics that I learned in some biology class or another.

Well, for what it's worth, in the new award system that's being finished, we count stores as Gen 1.

Im another Store = G1. And Foals with one lined and one store are always the continuing gen from the lined.

Im really super excited that the Animal awards will now track this for us.
