I just spent a long time putting together some information about the breed so I thought I'd put it here, too so you all can learn about this fascinating horse!

ABOUT THE NOKOTA
The Nokota horse's physical and behavioral characteristics reflects their known history since the late 1800s. Their ancestors include early Native American and frontier ranch horses bred for use as war horses, buffalo runners, and all-purpose saddle horses. Many of those horses were descended from Spanish colonial stock. During most of the twentieth century, they lived in the rugged Little Missouri badlands, an area of rugged topography, erratic climatic conditions and long, sub-zero winters. These physical and social pressures combined to form durable, athletic, intelligent horses.

Nokotas are called “the equine all-terrain vehicle” because of their athleticism, durability, and stamina. Physically, they are characterized by a square-set, angular frame, tapering musculature, V-shaped front end, angular shoulders with prominent withers, distinctly sloped croup, low tail set, strong bone, legs, and hooves, and “Spanish colonial” pigmentation. The overall type is somewhat larger and rangier than the Spanish colonial horses of the souther Plains (“mustangs”) while retaining typical Spanish coat colors and other points of conformation. Many Nokotas are blue roan—so many that this relatively rare color has become a hallmark of the breed. Mentally, they are problem solvers and independent thinkers and develop strong, reciprocal bonds with those they trust. 

Because of their agility, endurance, and jumping ability, Nokotas are used in many events, including endurance riding, western riding and English disciplines.

The Kuntz family has been working hard since the 80's the preserve this amazing horse. You can see the most up-to-date pictures of what they're doing at their Facebook Group, The Nokota Horse Conservancy.

For the month of July, I'm offering new breeders a free foal from my Sunnyside or Namesake lines. Namesake line Nokotas should be ~1.8mill points by the time of breeding. Message me to reserve!

After July, free foals from Sunnyside lines will be available only on a case-by-case basis.
