Does anyone on here sign? or use ASL?

I just started learning ASl because I have a customer who comes in regularly. Usually he calls in, so his calls are interpretted and I never get to see him in person. But, he came in person last night and I decided that I was going to try learning ASL again but take it seriously this time. So I watched videos for HOURS picking things up!

And let me tell y'all, a different customer came in today needing help and I was able to help him!! It was such an amazing feeling watching his face light up when he saw that I could sign even just a little bit. He was so nice and even helped to teach me a few things!

So, now I was just curious to see if anyone else in our little community ever uses sign language?

Same as Maharet here. My mom studied Sign Language in her first two years of college, for both the fun of it and in case she may need it in the future. I've picked up a couple things from her studies and in my own time studies of a ASL book; since I have to take a language course in one of my upcoming semesters for film and animation, I'm actually heavily considering taking a sign language course as one of my narrowed option choices.

Granted, I'm not a fluent speaker in ASL, but I can sign quite a few things that have come in handy. I can sign all the letters of the alphabet, a few words like: hello, goodbye, nice to meet you, please and thank-you, yes and no and all the days of the week. In addition to that I can also partially sign the Pledge of Allegiance and ask someone if they want a drink but that's all I can "say" as of right now.

Maha and Eau, that's both awesome! I wish I would've taken it in my previous years of college when I was taking credits for fun. Now the only credits I can take are for my major

I've always thought it's a useful skill to have and it always bugged me that my very dumb high school made us learn Latin instead of sign language. I just wish there was a universal sign language, but then again I don't know how much ASL differs from, say, Finnish sign language.

From what I have learned on Youtube, I have been able to help around 6 customers here at my job. And it's made me decide that at some point, after I finish this school year and get my first bachelor's degree. I am going to go back to school so that I can get certified and become an interpretter.

What job do you have that brings so many Deaf in??

Just as a heads up, you'll have to take several years of classes in order to get certified, and you have to continue to renew the certification which is a little pricey. But it's worth it.

Im the Rental Car Manager at Toyota in my city. But, since we are in the dealership, we get a lot of customers who are coming in to get their car serviced. I'm one of the few here who even know any sign language. I'm the only one actively learning.

And yeah, that's what I've heard. But, it would be so worth it!

I know some of the super basics.  The alphabet, hello, goodbye, yes, no, thank you.  My college had very few sign language courses, and they never fit into my schedule, but now that I'm out and have my bachelors, I think I'm going to take a few ASL courses at a community college near my house to learn it.  It just seems like such a good skill to have, and I've always been interested in it. I knew a lot when I was younger, but I've forgotten most of it.  Can't wait to really get back into it =D

I have learned so much from watching Libbey aka TheDailySign on Youtube who does mainly music video covers in PSE which is a form of sign language. And then the lessons that Bill Vicars has posted!

I am finishing up my bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Studies this school year (graduate 2018 may!!!) and I'm debating going back to school for an associates in either ASL interpretting or Private Investigation.

I took a year of ASL in undergrad and absolutely loved it! I had an incredible professor who was born deaf and taught us completely using ASL from day one. I think most of us were able to pick it up so well because he taught his lesson that way, instead of using a translator. That's amazing that you're learning this on your own!

Oh that's awesome! I agree, I think submersive teaching is the best way to go. This language is so visual so I don't think there needs to be a whole lot of translation when being taught. BUT! I am also one who learns by seeing and doing so...
But yes, I absolutely love the language and the culture and I really want to become fluent.

Deaf culture is so important! And that's really interesting that you're a visual learner. I on the other hand am not, so I found it initially challenging, but once I practiced the techniques and got accustomed, it came a lot more naturally. Good luck with the rest of your studies though! We need more ASL people :)
