Thoughts on why the odd line breeding is so frowned upon on games like HP?

I always wondered this too. It's extremely common in pretty much any well-known horse breed IRL. It makes re-creating Arabian lines on here difficult to say the least!

Hrm, don't know either! Maybe if HP had genetics it would be more of a thing?

My opinion is that you're not dealing with genetics and the huge impact they have in RL breeding. On here, you have one thing to consider when breeding and that's points. Points are so one dimensional and can be replicated fairly easily, it's like taking the easy way out to not train another animal. But if it something you want to do for whatever reason then I think you should. People might have freaked out on HL but we're much more laid back and understanding here so yea ;)

I'm curious on this myself, really. When I had AQH's I wanted to replicate some lineages I loved from Smart Chic Olena, Hollywood Dun It, Three Doc Bars, Pine Bar Zippo, etc. but with ban of line breeding, it made it difficult so I never could. I lost my interest after that and pulled from them. :/

Would be nice to replicate a few famous real life Holsteiner pedigrees if I could when I decide to cut my Medicine Lines down.

Is there a ban on line breeding on HP or is it just frowned upon? Or is it even frowned upon? Sounds like there are several people who aren't bothered by it. :)

The game literally won't let you breed animals together that are related at all - up until the relation is a certain amount of generations away (the exact number of which escapes me right now).

There's is no offical ban on line breeding.  The system just wont let you inbreed.

If yall want to do line breeding then just use the same name...just the points wont match, but youll have the names to replicate lines...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the game catches it if it's within 3 generations, so basically what you can see when you view an animal's pedigree. Otherwise, you're good to go. The thought has occurred to me to do what Aza suggested as well, it all depends on the timeframe you're working within to recreate a pedigree.

Yeah, using Azalie's method it's possible, but on the principle of being an anal-retentive person about it actually being the same horse - I'm just going to stick to not recreating lines. :] It's just a game; I really don't care that much. Everyone else is obviously welcome to do as they please.

I misunderstood line breeding when I was talking to Mame about it. I don't do it on here, and I never understood how it's any different from inbreeding, so I don't agree with it.

I'm re-creating my horse's lines here on HP and there are a few repeats in his lines, which is kind of difficult to replicate here. I just changed the repeated names ever so slightly lol (Natalma, Natalia, Natalie)

This is a super interesting question. I know that, like many have said before, it's frowned upon. Truly though... if you look at the real world breeding of any pedigree animals... often the ones with some line breeding generally are better. It's a great way to narrow in on a specific trait that you're after. We have purebred cattle and there is an extent of linebreeding that we do as well. However, like so many pointed out, the game is more based on points vs genetics. Really interesting question and great conversation. :) *genetic nerd in cattle* lol!
