Public Breeding?

I'm still pretty new to the game, about a week since I've started. OOOOOLLLLDD player of HL, so I guess I'm coming with that mindset when I ask, are players offering horses for stud? I am trying out the Thoroughbred breed here (used to be a SEA breeder) and making breeding plans for my store mares. I've searched and found no studs are currently being publicly offered. Is everything private now? If so, why? What's happened to scare everyone from offering public breedings?

Like I said, I'm new and I still have some homework to do to understand everything.

I know exactly what mindset you're talking about! The public vs. private lines/breedings is an ongoing issue here... My understanding is that it's sort-of related to the number of breeds available. There are a lot, and some breeds only have a handful of active breeders. With Thoroughbreds, at least, there is a pretty active breeding community so it will be a little easier for you than with some other breeds! I can't say for sure why players like to keep things private, but in the past I have worried about things like lackluster (ie, untrained) offspring being tied to my brand, reselling, over-breeding, etc. HP hasn't reached the massive size of HL yet, and I think a lot of people like to feel 'in control' of their lines, or descendants from their lines, even if they no longer own them. I will fully admit to that, though I'm trying to get over it and be more open to public breedings/sales. :P It's almost a trust issue, in a way?!That being said, I think that most players are willing to negotiate with you if you approach them directly for a breeding (rather than relying on the search function). I know I have let other people breed to my stallions a few times in the past!

Dont worry misa i wont ruin your lines lol Misa is a good example of trusting since she so gratiously sold me a few back up ISHs. But i do my best to keep my lines open for the most part cause sharing lines is exciting! When people show interest in my lines it means that i have done good as a trainer. But, like she said, it's a trust thing. When you think about it thats 20 weeks that you have painstakingly trained through to get the final result.

I love sharing my lines to trusted trainers/breeders. The Andalusian breed isn't as popular as other breeds and by me selling back ups and offering public breedings I get more people interested in the breed. I wish more people were open to public lines!

I can definitely understand why people are trying to secure their lines by limiting breeding to almost completely private. I used to keep tabs on foals I sold to make sure they are kept up with and often offered to buy them back if nothing has been done. I've lurked on home pages almost expecting to see which horses they have available for stud and if they have a limited slots and whose filled them, like how it was on HL. I'm not seeing it, so thats why I've asked. When I played HL to get a 200ker was HUGE! It took a ton of money and networking. I used to spend 20 minutes training just one horse, so I totally get painstaking training. As I've said before, I'm coming here with an old HL mentality.

I guess what I'm saying, is I hope there will be more public breeding. Everyone has taken great care and bred wonderfully high pointed horses and imagine the horses we could have if lines were shared. :D

Well I don't have much of anything to add to the why public breedings are not as popular here, I think the other hit it pretty much on the head. But ! Welcome to HP! We can always use more active players :)

Here are 2 other threads about sharing lines, aka public breedings. Maybe someone in one of these will be willing to stud out to you :) http://horsephenomena.com/viewpost.php?id=900 http://horsephenomena.com/viewpost.php?id=5419

Sorry for the necro-ing of a fairly old post, but I just saw it and would like to add my comment too. I'm fairly new here, but this topic has been of a great concern to me already, and has been the only fault I've found with the game.Because of some issues I have, I'm not very social when it comes to forums/chats. You will probably never see me in the chat room, and I only post on the forums when I have something specific to say. I'm rusty and have very little time in my life to make photo manipulations, so that aspect of the game is out for me as well. So for me when I came here, I was most excited about the breeding aspect of the game, as thats where I have thrived on every other game I've played. Only to be disheartened to see that the breeding community in this game is well... non-existent.I think a lot more should be done to promote breeding in the game. Some suggestions? Remove wait time period for stallions completely, and lower mares to 7 days per breeding. Move breed specialties to this - 4 maximum foals for non-breed specialties, 6 maximum for specialties. This still allows a perk for specialties while preventing over-breeding, but will also allow players to not have to feel that "I can only breed every 5/14 days so better not let that go to waste on a public breeding" mentality that I think is going around. Makes mares available for lease, so you don't limit public breedings to just stallions. Maybe offer a small point bonus (10k-ish points?) to foals who have parents bred from two different player ID's. Lastly, make a forum section dedicated to offering stallions and mares available for breeding to make it easier to find the perfect horses for breedings.Until then, all of my animals - horses and dogs, males and females, are available for public breedings after hitting certain age and point goals! I am proud to offer them to other players and hope to see my bloodlines thrive in future generations throughout the game! :D

I don't think removing wait times will encourage more people to offer breedings, nor do I think that limiting how many offspring people can have per animal will help."Maybe offer a small point bonus (10k-ish points?) to foals who have parents bred from two different player ID's" -- while good in theory, I think a lot of people would just put their mare and stallion on two different accounts to take advantage of this. It won't have the effect that you want. It's one of the things in the game that I don't think we, as staff, can really do anything about. It's player attitudes in waiting to keep their animals to themselves. Even if we stopped accepting new breeds to the game so people had to breed something that five other people are breeding, we can't stop them from wanting to keep their lines to themselves.

There's been more and more talk about promoting outside breedings between players, so I think it's something that's on the horizon. A lot more people have been open to the idea since we made it so that retired animals no longer disappear off the pedigree, people just have to start actually DOING IT. Plus, the fashion on this game leans more towards being the only or one of very few breeders of any given breed, versus massive amounts of people breeding the same thing... which is kind of unfortunate. It doesn't look like the OP or yourself breed anything that I do, but if you ever hop onto any of my breeds, I gladly cross out and trade backups. (I do spot akhal-tekes and appaloosas on your account, Durdanios, and a cross between the two produces a Nez Perce, which I -DO- breed... so down the road... ;D)

I have my studs for Private only so I can control who gets a breeding. So If you want one you just need to request.
