I thought Brabant was just another name for the Belgian/the foundation stock of the Belgian? http://www.trekpaard.net/en/belgian-draft-horse |

There's a pretty big difference between what is called the Belgian here and what is called the Brabant Belgian. When people refer to the Belgian, they mean what is essentially the American Belgian, which are the tall leggy chestnuts. Brabants are referred to as Brabants or Brabant Belgians. I have no idea if they're considered the same breed still but there's a very significant split in physical appearance, which I feel like you see more in show Belgians than anything. Here Belgians are the tall, leggy chestnuts and if you mean literally anything that is outside of that, you call it a Brabant or a Brabant Belgian. If it's roan, short and thick, it's not called a Belgian, it's a Brabant. So, the Brabant was a foundation for what eventually became the American Belgian, which are the chestnuts. You've got the American Belgian and the Brabant Belgian pretty much. I have no idea if they're considered the same breed over here (or if some people do and some people don't, etc.), but I do know there's multiple registries and everything I've seen with the drafts I've been around has involved this split.
Belgian: Brabant:
Editing this to add: In all the research I've done, I feel like this split came about in breeding for a show type draft vs. a working type draft. Kind of like how American Percherons look very different from European Percherons. |

Cool beans! I've heard a ton of information with people being split as to them either being one breed, two breeds, the foundation stock of one breed, a sub-type of one breed, etc. etc. so it's like 'what in the world is true?!' |

Seriously!! It's absolutely a mudpit of information! It'd be so much easier if they just officially split them into different breeds lol. |

Yeah it's super confusing lol I even messaged Sam to see if I should even try to get them added. But they have their own associations in different countries, so for the sake of HP they can be their own thing haha. My understanding is that they are the foundation breed for the American Belgian, but still seperate because the American Belgian was cross breed to give them a longer, leaner look. But finding legit info isn't the easiest. Now that we're talking about it, I have a friend in Norway who photographs them at shows; I should ask him what he knows about the breed. |

I know of a European stock provider that seems to have one. I've always drooled over it. I had no idea the breeds had any relation to each other! Link Tree |

If I was a horse, I'd probably be a Brabant. Short and fat and freaking adorable. |
