Milk Cows?

Has anyone on HP had any experience with milk cows? We are looking to buy one not only for family milk/butter/cheese but for our bottle calves every spring. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for the best milking experience? Also any recommendations for breed? We know a few people who have had jersey cows but I've been looking into holsteins and galloway heifers as well. Thank you in advance!! |

I live and breathe dairy cows! Jerseys are the most popular for family cows, because of their butter fat, and they are easy to work with, they have a bit of more of a personality vs the Holsteins. Holsteins are more for quanitity of milk, so I guess if you want bottle babies then she'll do the job with supplying the milk. If you have any questions you can message me! |

I know more about dairy goats than Dairy cattle, but I still do have some knowledge on the matter! You could message me on any inquiries/questions, but if you specifically want cattle then Amberellie is ya gal!

I second the Jersey suggestion! They are super quiet cattle. They also do hae a bit richer milk than Holstein and are a smaller animal than a Holstein. As far as the best milking experience, if you're just milking for your own consumption you probably will want to make sure that she has a calf on her otherwise you'll probably have to milk her twice a day. I know hand milking can take some time, so there are little portable milkers that you can buy. They are pretty pricy I am sure, but I bet you could probably find a good used one for a more reasonable price. What I would do is get in touch with a local breeder. They may have a female that isn't cut our for their operation but might be perfect for a family cow. :) |

I have never owned or raised a cow but this entire thread is super intriguing to me. :D * lives vicariously through everyone who has a cow * |
