Alright... if any of you know me... you know that I'm an absolute cow nut haha. I just wanted to toss my girl Platinum up here. We've bred and raised her. She's expecting her first baby this January! We cannot wait. We've already had several breeders inquire about embryo work with her. So that's a huge compliment to us. I cannot wait to see what she has for a little baby. She's bred to a bull all the way over in Australia (we're from Canada), so we're pretty excited to see what comes of the combination of the two of them.
On a side note I can't figure out how to post a photo. |

She is so pretty! I love the roans! Now I'm excited :P
One of my 4H kids got into beef cattle, and has her own Shorthorn, who is completely white, and ended up with a mostly red heifer calf, but they are dying to have a roan like yours! |

Oh Vinny she is absolutely gorgeous! I love roans too! I went to an agricultural school and I had a particular soft spot for some of the simmies we had on the farm. My grandfather bred Herefords for years when our family used to farm so I'm cow-mad too! Please keep us posted! |

I had no idea this color was called roan on cows hehe I always thought of them as like a sabino. She's so pretty though! I want a cow but we don't have the room. |

Thanks everyone! She is an absolute doll! She's also the most soft for those that are wondering lol! The bull she's bred to is red, so we'll see what it comes out as. We've bred the bull to other roan cows and have gotten pure white calves, so it's a total crap shoot as far as what color it is. :) I can't wait for calving. I'll be sure to post photos of our babies as they start to be born. I honestly had no idea so many people had ties to cattle here on HP! Super cool! I absolutely adore herefords and sims! Two of my most favorite breeds! :D |

I'm also a farm girl with cows! They're not quite as pretty as yours tho! :P My dad raises beef cows - hereford and some angus. Love calving season and all the wittle baby moos. :) |

Wooo we should start a cow club Pan lol! :P Awe does he cross the hereford and angus cows for black baldies? Totally the best time of the year. They are just so blinkin cute! When does your dad calve? In the spring? |

He prefers the herefords for their temperment (and the color haha) -angus, I've seen firsthand, even, are more tempermental and get can get more problematic with loading, vet checks/shots, but he likes to breed the angus especially to the hereford heifers as then they have smaller calves. He's been doing AI the last few years trying to match smaller bulls with the heifers and then the herefords to the others who have calves already. He actually just told me he plans next year to have them bred a little later so calves are born later in the spring...and, he had a reason for this and for the life of me I can't remember what it was. xD Oh!! I think the price of fat cattle always ends up fairly low about the time he's ready to sell cuz that's when everyone else is, so he thought he'd try to have cattle ready later on in the season and then have a chance of getting a better price on them! |

Yes, we can totally relate there. I grew up on a commercial beef cattle operation and dad had a few angus and angus cross cows... great cows, but they are a little "hotter" than other brittish breeds. That's why we love the shorthorns so much. They are puppydog quiet, much like the herefords. Sometimes that's worth it's weight in gold. We also have limousin cattle and they are pretty quiet now, thanks to a lot of efford of breeders to cull out the tempermental ones to not pass that trait on, but they definitely aren't quiet like the herefords/shorthorns.
Haha yes! Same here! I can't wait to post pictures of the little fluffers as they start making their appearance! |

We should take bets on what her calf is going to be as far as color! I'll find a picture of the calf's daddy and we could start a "baby pool" lmao! The colors that shorthorns can get are as follows: Red, Roan, Red and white (kind of like a paint, usually a red base with white markings) and then white! We've used this bull before and have gotten a pure white as well as a roan. Here is a good article explaining their color with pictures. :) https://shorthorn.org/shorthorn-color/ |
