So i'm new to the whole smudging and redoing the mane thing. I just did a quick test run on a simple head shot and would just like some tips and hints on stuff, to make it look good. I especially need help on face definition {cheek bones, etc.} and the mane in general. Anything else that looks off, please let me know. Like I said, i'm totally new to this and could use all the help I can get!

Here's what i've got thus far: http://i39.tinypic.com/mm4xl3.png
and the original image: http://colourize-stock.deviantart.com/art/Itz-123-381223061

I used my laptop to make this {mouse} and just pretty much cut it out, smudged the body, and then smudged the mane.

Not bad for your first shot. I would say its a bit overdone though. But thats just me. Im not a huge fan of body smudging, unless of course its a bad quality image, and smudging helps make it look better.Remember to go with the contours of the body. Use low strength, to prevent over smudging... Thats all I got. Keep practising!

I'm not SUPER with smudging, but I try as much as possible to stick to the original mane. So I pick colors from it and smudge lightly at the top and just try to bring it down so it's more flow-y and looks natural. I use photoshop so there's a finger painting option that leaves a small dot of color and then lets you smudge which I like. But I really like the way you've kept the mane going in a "natural" direction! A lot of people when they are first starting on manes and tails go all crazy with it and it looks like a horsey wig, haha. So good job!I've never really done body smudging so I can't help there! Sorry :P.

When I smudge a horse, I duplicate the horse layer, smudge the one, and then lower the opacity, so, the horse doesn't look, overly smudged. And for just smudging the mane, it looks nice ^^
