Lucky Got Shaved This Year

We decided to shave lucky this year because it's just too hot where I live. So he went from this: to this: You can kind of see that he actually has small tan and grey spots on his back that you couldn't see before. He's got a lot of grey behind his ears too from his sable coloring I assume. He's so much cooler now and I don't have to vacuum ever 5 minutes haha. |

aww! We shave Shadow every 4-5 months. Otherwise he itches real bad (shaved he doesnt itch at all.. weird). They always look so small after they are shaved! |

I miss his long hair though, I like him better "all natural"but he's more comfortable this way so it looks like he'll get shaved at least each summer. I'm interested to see how long his hair takes to grow back |

I am just wondering if you know that shaving a Pyrenees may cause their hair not to grow back properly due to their double coat. However, a lot of people do shave them down, and they are fine. I had just had Porter clipped before he passed. How much does he weigh? Porter was 175 pounds. |

I'm well aware of the chance of his hair not coming back correctly but it's just not feasible to keep him in full coat in our weather conditions. I've seen enough of our patients with shaved legs grow hair back normally to not worry too much about it.At this point Lucky is only 83lb, he'll probably fill out a little more over the next year but most likely won't break 100lb. |

There's no rule that you can't shave a double coat, it's a highly debated subjected with no definitive answer. There are advantaged and disadvantages to both. In our case the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. We did this to make him more comfortable and he is. End of story. This topic is to show off his "new do" not debate if the shaving is bad for him. Further discussion of the political correctness of this isn't necessary. |

I don't shave my furry beasties (I don't want to part with their beautiful hair xD) but I invested in a furminator brush and it pretty much pulls out all the under fur that they shed anyway, just it gets it done a lot faster. Alfie (my pom) is double coated of course, but his fur has never been super thick, so the heat isn't too bad for him unless its super ridiculously hot. Winnie on the other hand, is coated like a fricken polar bear :p But now that I've 'furminated' her haha all she has left is the long top coat which is fairly thin and doesn't trap much heat. She's much happier now hahaHowever, if I lived somewhere where the heat was causing trouble for my dogs, I wouldn't think twice about shaving them. Yeah their double coat helps shield out heat to an extent, but when its 45 degrees outside, I really doubt wearing two fur coats helps keep them cool. I'm more concerned with their health and comfort, rather than what their fur looks like.Back on topic... Lucky looks so skinny without all that fur! When I give Alfie a bath, his coat flattens out and I can see how tiny he is without all the fluff. His coat will probably grow in pretty fast, since once summer ends, fur-growing season begins :P I'm betting he'll just look more poofy to start with, rather than shaggy like he did before, since the two coat layers will be starting at the same length. You should post progress pictures, I'm interested to see what he does hehe |

I tried a furminator on him and was all excited about it but I didn't really like it when I used it. He has like no top coat or something so he was basically bald in the spot I concentrated on when all his undercoat was brushed out. I've had better luck with it now that it was shorter but he's growing his hair back fast!Edit: Here's some updated pictures if anyone is interested. |

He is so handsome! I shaved my german shepherd mix once, I wont do that again, he looked way to different and his hair grew back in lighter which was weird o.o I shave my border collie down and I want to shave my anatolian mix down but I dont want to ruin his super soft hair. I know it doesn't always happen but it scares me xD |

Thanks Copper. He's not the most photogenic dog XD The texture hasn't changed on Lucky but yeah, you never know until you do it what it will grow back like. |
