Hey! So ever since I was a little girl, I've been in love with horses, as I'm sure a lot of you are and I've always wanted my own. I am slowly saving up my money to eventually buy my own, at the moment I'm taking riding lessons but I was wondering if it is a good idea to gradually build up little bits and pieces kind of like a glory box of some sort but for a horse, say like a grooming kit, lead rope, maybe a halter.

Is this a good idea or not? And if it is, are there definite things I should hold off on buying until I have a horse?

Thanks guys!

It's really up to you, but that stuff gets expensive quickly so make sure you save up enough for that too. A lot of things that you get, you won't be able to buy until you get your horse because you will need to buy them specifically for that horse. And with a grooming box, you could get it now or later, it's up to you!

I agree with Sam there are somethings you could buy, be it now or late, but a lot of stuff when it comes to horses is better off being bought once you have said animal, basically because proper fit is so important. So stuff like say a grooming kit, a lead rope, and some of your own riding clothing might be okay, but stuff like halters, saddles, blankets, bridles should wait until you buy your own horse :)

I agree with everything that's already been said here, but I just thought I would add something from the perspective of someone who does not own but leases! :) I've been accumulating horse stuff that's more or less "transferable" for some time now. I have a grooming kit, fly sprays, bathing supplies, a few halters, and lead ropes. Aaand I love buying new saddle pads and baby pads. Basically, I'm collecting things that I can use now with the horse I lease and might someday be able to use with a horse I own~But as Sam and RedRain said, I wouldn't recommend buying things like saddles/bridles/sheets, because who knows what type of horse you'll end up with!

Yeah i used to have an appaloosa x quarter horse cross. Should be a normal sized horse right? Well no! His head was so big you would think he would have some draft in him but he was just a really big boy. He had to have specially made halters and bridles.

Haha, alrighty, I'm thinking after everyone's feedback I might just continue to save for the horse alone and see what may be passed with the horse. :)Farewell - That's so funny! I don't think I've ever heard of a horse having to have specially made halters and bridles lol.

Haha! That's so awesome! A horse with musical preference, that's probably the coolest thing I've ever heard. :P

My horse has a musical preference too, haha. I love country music but when I play anything too twangy her gets upset (which is sad/funny since he's named after Brooks and Dunn), he really likes Imagine by John Lennon.

That's amazing lol, I've never even thought about whether certain music changes a horses behaviour.

definitely use craigslist! ive gotten some AWESOME steals on there for just about everything. always be cautious and don't rush your decision-making of buying, especially if its for a high-priced item like a saddle or show tack. most of the time if you get stuff from a horse person, they will throw in some extra items for free :). good luck! taking riding lessons is a GREAT first step and will help build your confidence for sure.
