Horse names from the late 1700s.

So, as some of you know I am super into family history, and I'm currantly reading through probate records from certain counties in North Carolina during the years 1790-ish to 1805-ish, trying to find any mention of my 5x times great grandfather Simon Pugh. Anyways, in the wills it's common for people to leave horses to people, and they name the horses in the will, two names I've come across today, a black horse named Prince, and a mare named Spanish Fly. I just think it's really cool to know what people were naming their horses 200 years ago. haha.

I'm not sure if you have any particular breed preferences, but, here's some links to browse below at a fast glance; honestly, it seems their names were pretty much similiar to what we name our horses now-a-days aside the cute nicknames {i.e. Oreo, Snowflake, Sugar, Candy, etc.}: https://www.monticello.org/site/research-and-collections/horses

LMBO!! Okay, that name wins the internet!! Oh my god. xD I also found one more list of a TB Studbook from the 1700's this morning, that I thought might be interesting; These are all legitimately registered names from that era >> http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Studbook/EarlyA.htm I think out of all the names they list, I love these the most: * Yo Tambien * Young Spanker * Waxy Pope * Wheel of Fortune * Whalebone * Venison * Tantrum * Shark

I'm with Maha - love Potoooooooo/Pot8o/Pot-8-Os and the story behind the name, but I'm also incredibly tickled that one of his successful sons born in 1787 was named "Asparagus." |

Mero - I'm kinda disappointed though they did not take the opportunity to name one of Potoooooooo/Pot8o's offspring Tator Tot. But they did name one " Tomato " which is just as amazing lol! But seriously though, why all the food names? How hungry were these people?

If Tater Tots existed in the 18th century I'm sure they would've used it as a name somewhere! Crab is another one that gets me every time. |
