I BOUGHT A BABY HEDGEHOG!

If anyone knows things about Hedgehogs...please tell me the things. I don't know a lot about hedgehogs and keeping them as pets. But I've wanted one for about 7 years now.

So I only have these pictures so far from when I first brought him home yesterday. He is a boy. I'm not sure exactly how old he is but I know he's young. He's very scared and shy right now. I read that it takes a long time for hedgies to bond with their new owners so I'm trying to give him a balance of space to acclimate but also bonding time with me. They are nocturnal so I usually sit with him in the late evenings and I'll take more pictures tonight!

As for names, so far I have: Lucky, Francois, and Mr. Prickles. I am open to any other names though!

Awwwww omg congrats he is adorable! I haven't owned a hedgie of my own yet, but many of my friends have had multiple little pricklers over the years. My best advice based on gleanings from my friends and years of small pet ownership would be:

- Invest in a Carolina Storm wheel (Google it!) - the best large-scale small pet wheels on the market. Most commercially-available wheels aren't big enough for fully-grown hedgies (their backs should be able to be completely parallel to the ground while using it, not curved), but Carolina Storm wheels are easy to clean, quiet, and hard for pets to tip over.

- Paper bedding like you're using is great - but you can also look into reusable/washable fleece cage liners (you can make your own or find a seller on Etsy) as well. Both can be used at the same time, your pet might have a preference if you give him both options to try. :)

- Some hedgies like having their bristles brushed with a toothbrush - others get dry skin/dry spikes and can benefit from some olive oil droppered/brushed over the dry spots.

- Litter training is a godsend if you can stick with it. There are a lot of resources out there on how to teach your hedgie how to use a litter tray reliably; use "Yesterday's News" or other pelletted litter in the pan without any sort of fragrance or "bonus" additives that can come on cat litters.

The little white spot on his forehead or on top of his head area is spittle because he was self anointing :D I get so excited when he does something, lol.

Ha, thanks nyx! I've read they do bite but not very hard and usually it's called a "test bite". Although, if they are scared or upset they might bite multiple times to tell you to leave them alone. My hedgie bit my fingers and toes but I think it may have been because he thought it was his water bottle. It didn't really hurt!

He seems to be getting used to his new environment with all the sounds and stuff so that's good. He doesn't like the process of being picked up but once either on a surface or even in my hand, he is totally fine. I'm so happy that he seems happy! I think I might give him a bath this weekend.
