It's that time of the year again! This game was established in 2012 and has run almost every year since. It is something that a lot of players look forward to playing and I'm thrilled that I am able to run it as a Mod this year with additional prizes!

Please be sure to read through ALL the information below before entering. You don't need to be online the day of the race or personally watch it in order to participate. You don't even need to know anything about horse racing!

If you are a newer player (joined in the past six months),
you can apply a 50% discount to your draw fees!
You can view your join date on your home page.

If you have any questions, please send me a message.

Opening dates listed below are tentative. They may open later than this depending on the information available for the horses running. I will post a reply to this forum thread when the draws for each race open.

Kentucky Derby: 4/25 10:00am EST through 5/1 6:00pm EST
Preakness Stakes: 5/9 1:00pm EST through 5/15 6:00pm EST
Belmont Stakes: 6/1 1:00pm EST through 6/5 6:00pm EST

Draw 1: 5mil
Draw 2: 10mil
Draw 3: 15mil

Send the HPD to #113 with "TTCG DRAWS" in the reason box. When you purchase a draw, one of the horses running in the race will be chosen at random by a generator and assigned to you. You can purchase up to three draws total per race. Prizes will be rewarded to players whose horses place in the top 3 spots at the conclusion of the races.

All funds received for draws are added to the jackpot. Every jackpot will automatically begin at 100mil. This is double the jackpot size from 2019!

I will post a new reply to this thread each time winners are announced and draws open for the next race.

Example

1. Prynne sends 15mil to #113 for a Draw 3 for the Kentucky Derby.
2. I draw 3 horses at random for Prynne: Bob, Sue, and Nora.
3. It is now 5/4 and the Kentucky Derby just ran!
4. Bob placed 2nd, but Sue and Nora placed 5th and 8th respectively.
5. Since Prynne had their name assigned to Bob, they win the 2nd place prize. If another players name was also on Bob, they would split the jackpot for 2nd place and the 7 bonus energy to an animal would be raffled to either Prynne or the other winner.

Extra Information

Each draw will take into account which horses have not been drawn yet. If someone has drawn Bob, Bob will not be drawn again until all other horses have been drawn. This will ensure that at least every horse is drawn at least once.

In the event that one of your picks is scratched (removed) from the race, one of two things will happen.
1. If an alternate is entered in its place, your pick will be applied to the alternate.
2. If no alternate is entered, you will be drawn a replacement horse from the generator.

If you win, you will never win less than you paid in. If you paid 10mil for a draw 3, but your split winnings of the jackpot amounts to less than 10mil, I will pay the difference to make your winnings total 10mil.

PARTICIPATION RAFFLE: Everyone that participates in a race will earn 1 raffle ticket towards a drawing for 7,500 points for an animal and a 1-month upgrade. This drawing will occur after each race.

HPD DONATIONS: Donate 30mil towards the jackpot and receive 3x entries into the participation raffle for the current and remaining races. This means if you donate during the Derby, you will earn 3x entries for all three participation prize raffles as long as you purchase at least one draw per race. Each player can only donate ONCE. If multiple players donate during one race, some donations may be added to a future race jackpot instead of the current race to keep all jackpot prizes equally large.

FIRST PLACE: 50% of the jackpot split between winners. 10 extra energy for a horse or dog raffled to one of the winners if multiple are eligible.

SECOND PLACE: 30% of the jackpot split between winners. 7 extra energy for a horse or dog raffled to one of the winners if multiple are eligible.

THIRD PLACE: 20% of the jackpot split between winners. 4 extra energy for a horse or dog raffled to one of the winners if multiple are eligible.

BONUS: If you purchase a DRAW 3 and all three horses place in the top three, you will win 15,000 points for an animal and a 1-month upgrade. This will only be awarded to one person. If multiple people are eligible, one winner will be drawn via generator.

I will answer that for you soon, N.adhima!

The Preakness list has been updated. Draws are now closed!

We reached a 287.5mil jackpot, but I'm going to personally bump that to 300mil!

Update: THE 146TH PREAKNESS STAKES HAS BEEN RUN!

You can watch the official race replay on YouTube here if you missed it!

Two weeks ago, Medina Spirit could not be caught after jumping out to the front of the pack at the Kentucky Derby. That was not the case at Saturday's 146th Preakness Stakes. Little-known Rombauer sprung an 11-1 upset to win the Preakness on Saturday, passing Bob Baffert's Kentucky Derby winner to end a potential Triple Crown bid.

Baffert was not present at Pimlico Race Course, opting to stay away because of the controversy surrounding Medina Spirit, who tested positive for the steroid betamethasone in post-Derby testing. All the focus nonetheless was on 2-1 favorite. Medina Spirit was passed for the first time in his career by Rombauer, who won by 3Β½ lengths over second-place Midnight Bourbon.

Rombauer trainer Michael McCarthy won a Triple Crown race for the first time and captured the Preakness before Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, for whom he worked as an assistant before opening his own barn. Pletcher gave McCarthy a bear hug after the race. Rombauer is owned by John and Diane Fradkin, a far cry from Medina Spirit's Zedan Racing Stables and other horse racing conglomerates. He won for the third time in seven starts. McCarthy choked back tears while talking about everyone involved with Rombauer. "Means a lot to be here, participate on a day like this," he said. "Happy for the Fradkins. Just goes to show you that small players in the game can be successful, as well."

Here are the final results of the Preakness!

1st - Rombauer
2nd - Midnight Bourbon (3 1/2 lengths)
3rd - Medina Spirit (5 1/2 lengths)
4th - Keepmeinmind (9 1/2 lengths)
5th - Crowded Trade (12 1/4 lengths)
6th - Unbridled Honor (17 lengths)
7th - France Go de Ina (17 1/2 lengths)
8th - Risk Taking (23 1/2 lengths)
9th - Concert Tour (34 1/4 lengths)
10th - Ram (36 3/4 lengths)

Even though we won't have a Triple Crown contender this year, the Triple Crown Game will go on! Don't miss the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes on June 5th. Draws should open by June 1st. There may even be an extra surprise! Check back then for an update!

Bonus post since there was an inquiry as to what odds represent and how they work!

To put it in the most simple of terms, horse racing betting odds are the mathematical depiction of how likely each horse is to win a specific race. Horse racing odds are the return you can expect on your investment if your wager is successful, the odds or the payout reflecting to some degree the percentage chance your horse has of winning the race. The lower the chances of success, the bigger the payoff will be. Odds can vary heavily from track to track, horse to horse and from one moment to the next as the industry reacts to news, form and to how much money is being wagered.

When odds are shown in the traditional fractions, i.e. 4-1 or 9-2, it shows the amount of profit there is to be gained versus the stake. So if you bet a horse at 4-1 for $5 and it wins, you will return $25 ($5 x 4 original stake). Seeing any other number than a 1 means you can simply divide the amounts, so odds of 9-2 are basically 4Β½ to 1 then the same sums apply. This is why β€˜odds-on’ horses still give you a profit, so if your horse goes off at 4-5 this is basically 0.8 to 1 which is a negative, but you would still return your stake too. So a winning $50 bet at 4-5 would return a total of $90, giving you a profit of $40.

Remember that the chances of a horse winning, and how much money should be paid out if and when it does so, are based on probability. Traditional odds really give you a chance to see what sort of percentage chance the industry as a whole gives to your horse. For example if your horse is 5-1 that may not make it seem like such a long shot, but you have to add a standard $1 stake to that and divide 100 by that number. So, 100 divided by 6 gives this horse a less than 17% chance of success. A 17% probability of winning really isn’t bad in horse racing, but it’s important to note that if the odds on your horse suggest it has a 17% chance, it therefore also has an 83% chance of losing.

The Morning Line Odds:
Before any of the actual wagering starts, there are β€œmorning line” odds. These are the odds placed on each horse by the track’s handicapper (the person responsible for weighing each horse's likihood to win the race they are registered to run in). In today’s horse racing, the morning lines are rarely something to go by since they change so much as more bets are placed.

Changing Odds:
The odds will change depending on how many people are betting on each horse in the race up until post time (when the horses are loaded into the starting gate).

Favorites:
Each race has a favorite. This is the horse most likely to win. If there is more than one horse with the same odds of winning it may be displayed with β€œJF” meaning joint favorite.

Here are some examples of possible odds and how much they would pay out for a first place win using a standard $2 bet. They are listed from lowest to highest (numbers found on the top left side are the best odds and numbers on the lower right are worse). As you can see, the less likely a horse is to win a race, the more it pays when they do win.

I hope this helps odds make more sense!

You can now purchase draws for The Belmont Stakes!
Draws can be purchased until Saturday, June 5th at 6:00pm EST.

To celebrate the conclusion of the 2021 Triple Crown Game, the jackpot will start at 200mil instead of 100mil! In addition, there will be three 1-month upgrades awarded for the Belmont Stakes participation raffle instead of only one! Upgrades will be awarded to three different individuals; a single player cannot win more than one upgrade during this raffle.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to me via message. Thank you so much to everyone who has purchased draws for any of the three races. You all make this game worth running each year!

General Race Information

Post Position Draw will occur on Tuesday, June 1st. This draw determines which position each horse will start from and can be very important in determining how well a horse will run the race. Morning-line (starting) odds for the race will be announced shortly after the draw.

Post time for the race is Saturday, June 5th at 6:49pm EST. This is when the horses will begin making their way to the gate to start the race. The race can be watched on NBC. I will post a link to a Youtube video covering the race when I announce the winners within 24 hours after the race is run.

Contenders & Estimated Odds

Essential Quality, 7-2
Hot Rod Charlie, 9-2
Rombauer, 5-1
Rock Your World, 6-1
Known Agenda, 9-1
Rebel's Romance, 11-1
Promise Keeper, 15-1
Keepmeinmind, 20-1
Bourbonic, 26-1
France Go de Ina, 28-1
Overtook, 30-1

Fun Facts

01. Before 1921, the horses ran in a clockwise manner, as they did in English racing.

02. In 2002, Sarava, at 70.25-1 odds, upset War Emblem and his bid for the Triple Crown, making Sarava the highest paying winner in Belmont history. A $2 bid on Sarava returned $142.50.

03. In 1993, Julie Krone became the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race at Belmont Park.

04. Secretariat's 2:24 winning time not only set a world record for 1 1/2 miles on the dirt, but also set a Belmont record for his 31-lengths margin of victory. In addition, Secretariat also set Belmont records in 1/2 mile, 3/4 mile, 1 mile and 1 1/4-mile fractions.

05. The record for the largest crowd came in 2004.Β  That year 120,139 fans went to watch Smarty Jones attempt to win the Triple Crown only to be upset by Birdstone.

06. The Belmont is the longest of the three Triple Crown legs at a distance of 1.5 miles. The Kentucky Derby is 1 1/4 miles and the Preakness is 1 3/16. The longer distance is what historically has put speed horses at a disadvantage, and is the main reason why the Belmont is also known as "The Test of the Champion."

07. The Belmont Stakes is the oldest of the three Triple Crown races, with its first run taking place in 1867. The White Pine in Belmont Park's paddock is even older than that. The iconic tree, which became the Belmont Park's logo in 1968, is estimated to be about 200 years old.

08. Despite the fact the Belmont is the oldest of the three Triple Crown races, it isn't known for its longstanding traditions β€” mainly because its traditions have repeatedly changed throughout history.

09. More than half of winning horses have been bred in Kentucky.

10. The winner of the race has a large blanket of white carnations draped over them. More than 700 carnations are needed to create the 40-pound blanket. The process of constructing the blanket takes around five hours.

Post Position Draw is Complete!

The Post Position draw occurred on Tuesday, June 1st. This draw determines which position each horse will start from and can be very important in determining how well a horse will run the race. Here is a list of the official contenders for the race and their recent odds. Three horses didn't make it to this list. The people who drew those horses in the days prior have been issued a replacement and contacted via private message.

01. Bourbonic       15-1
02. Essential Quality 2-1
03. Rombauer        3-1
04. Hot Rod Charlie   7-2
05. France Go de Ina   30-1
06. Known Agenda    6-1
07. Rock Your World  9-2
08. Overtook      20-1

Regarded as "The Test of the Champion," the 1 1/2 mile Triple Crown race requires horses to conserve speed and energy. When they enter the long homestretch at "Big Sandy", stamina becomes a deciding factor. Over the last 15 years, there have been 10 horses win the Belmont at odds of 6/1 or greater, and eight of the winners were double-digit odds at post time. The eight-horse Belmont field is the smallest since American Pharoah beat seven rivals in 2015 to capture the Triple Crown. It is truly almost anyone's race. I can't wait to see who wins!

Why is Medina Spirit not running in the Belmont?

We will not see Medina Spirit run in the Belmont in New York due to Bob Baffert being suspended by the New York Racing Association (NYRA) in May 2021 and barring his horses from any event at Belmont Park or Saratoga Race Course this summer. The NYRA said in a statement that the suspension is simply not a reaction to Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit testing positive for betamethasone earlier that month. Rather, the decision takes "into account the fact that other horses trained by Mr. Baffert have failed drug tests in the recent past, resulting in the assessment of penalties against him by thoroughbred racing regulators in Kentucky, California, and Arkansas." The Hall of Fame trainer's horses have completed the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes twice in the last six years, but Medina Spirit's loss at the Preakness last weekend ended Baffert's chances at another Triple Crown.

Update Regarding Medina Spirit's Failed Derby Drug Test

Medina Spirit’s positive drug test after the Kentucky Derby has been confirmed after testing a second sample from the day of the race. The test confirmed the presence, at a prohibited level, of the drug betamethasone, a corticosteroid that is injected into joints to reduce pain and swelling. The second positive test sharply increases the chance that Medina Spirit’s victory on May 1 will be overturned by Kentucky racing officials and that Mandaloun, which ran second that day, will be declared the winner. Hours after disclosure of the test, the company that operates Churchill Downs Racetrack β€” the site of the Kentucky Derby β€” said it had immediately suspended Baffert, and any trainers directly of indirectly employed by Bob Baffert Racing Stables, from racing at that track for two years. That means that no horse trained by Baffert or his stable can race in the Derby in 2022 and 2023.

Clark Brewster, a lawyer who represents Medina Spirit’s owner, Amr Zedan, said a laboratory at the University of California (which Baffert personally chose) tested a second postrace sample from the Derby.Β  In a text message, however, Brewster said the laboratory did not test the blood or urine samples for the presence of other compounds, β€œwhich could prove the trace positive came from an inadvertent and materially inconsequential contamination sourced from a topical ointment used to treat Medina Spirit for a skin lesion on his hip.” Brewster said the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has agreed to send the original blood and urine tests to an independent and accredited laboratory for analysis to determine whether the specimens contain other components proving the source to be the topical ointment.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has the sole authority to disqualify Medina Spirit as the winner of the Derby. The commission declined comment on Wednesday. Kristin Voskuhl, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, said in a statement that the commission β€œdoes not provide comment or updates on the status of ongoing investigations.” β€œThe KHRC values fairness and transparency, and will provide information to the media and public at the close of an investigation."

A possible disqualification is months away and destined to be tied up in the courts for years. First, racing officials will conduct a hearing and issue a ruling. If they disqualify Medina Spirit and either suspend or fine Baffert, he could appeal to the full commission. If the unfavorable ruling is still not overturned, he could pursue a remedy in civil court. If Medina Spirit is disqualified, they will forfeit the more than $1.8 million first-place check they earned when the horse crossed the finish line first. If Medina Spirit is disqualified as winner of the Derby, he will not be the first. In 1968, the Derby victory of Dancer’s Image was taken away after a drug test showed the presence of a banned anti-inflammatory. It took four years before Dancer’s Image was irrevocably disqualified.

The Medina Spirit controversy comes as horse racing, acknowledging it has a drug problem, prepares to implement the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, which was passed last year in Congress. It will take effect July 1, 2022, and calls for a board overseen by the Federal Trade Commission to write rules and penalties to be enforced by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. I made a post regarding these upcoming changes previously in this thread if you would like to read more about it.

You're very welcome, Tragedy!

I had a very good question from someone today regarding purchasing draws for the races and I wanted to cover it pubicly to make sure everyone who is tempted to enter understands this.

Every race is considered a separate event despite it being collectively called The Triple Crown Game. You can purchase draws for any race that is currently active regardless of whether or not if you participated in any of the previous races. So if you're just now seeing this event and want to participate, you are more than welcome to!

Again, please feel free to ask any questions by replying to this thread or sending me a message. (:

Update: THE 153RD BELMONT STAKES HAS BEEN RUN!

You can watch the official race replay on YouTube here if you missed it!

Essential Quality, trained by Brad Cox and ridden by jockey Luis Saez, won the 153rd running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday! The horse was the early betting favorite to win the race and finished ahead of Hot Rod Charlie and the 146th Preakness Stakes winner Rombauer, who finished in second and third place, respectively. Hot Rod Charlie was the early leader but Essential Quality passed him in the final turn and held on down the stretch to win by a length-and-a-half. Rombauer finished 11.25 lengths behind Hot Rod Charlie. The win gave trainer Brad Cox his first Triple Crown victory.

Essential Quality became the fourth son of Tapit to win the 1.5-mile race since 2014. The colt won in 2:27.11, the 11th-fastest time in the Belmont at the 1.5-mile distance and the fastest since American Pharoah completed the Triple Crown in 2015 by winning in 2:26.65.

Here are the official results!
