Characteristics

The Canadian Sport Horse is an all arounder breed, produced to excell in the hunter, jumper, dressage and eventing rings.

They should ideally, stand around 16-17 hands with good body depth and substance. A well defined head with expressive eyes, strong and clean joints and well angled pasterns. The neck should flow to well-defined withers a long sloping should complete with a smooth topline. The hindquarters should be muscular and rounded. Their gaits need to show impulsion and corectness, straight, balanced and ground covering. Both mares and stallions should have a good character, show intelligence, courage and have an athletic presence.

History

Farmers would select their mixed bred mares (usually those with lots of cold blooded influence) and breed them to imported Thoroughbreds. The resulting mix created an agile, sound saddlehorse. This technique was well used and tried around the world, notably in the creation of the Irish Sport Horse. Later on, European warmbloods had gained supremacy of the sport horse and competition world. With the regular import of these warmbloods to Canada, the Canadian Sport Horse Association noted the potential of increasing the quality of performance horses, and began including these horses in it's studbook. Horses intended for breeding use are required to be inspected and approved, meeting the above characteristics under the "sport horse" type.
