My Photography As Stock - IMPORTANT!

I have been getting asked this a lot recently since my last show at the Open Western Pleasure - I'm honestly very upset to have to tell you all this, but the breeders in my area are the ones making this happen for now. I do not know what they're trying to hide, but clearly it is something suspicious.

for those who are new to the game or have just learned about this, allow me to summarize for you. Starting in September, I started my own hobbist photographer business as practice while I'm in College for Interactive Media Production. As many of you are aware, I specialize in cats, dogs and horses but I particulary swing mostly in the main focus of horses. When I first started the business, I stated in a forum (maybe more), that my images could be used as stock anywhere, for any reason as long as I was credited properly.

Unfortunately - That has not worked out. Many breeders have specifically told me qoute, "We do not want our horses, children or ourselves put online. You may take pictures of us for personal use but they may not be used on websites or as stock. For any reasons."

But, I have had the occasional few tell me this,"Yes, the images may be put on your website but they may not be used as stock."

Due to this reason (and having courtesy of my clients), my images can not be stock at this time and to say it politely, I'm very frustrated. There are many images that could be used as stock. But until I move up north (or get into a commercial business), they're only for looking at.

If you wish to not follow anymore on the journey, I understand - But, please let me know if you still want to see my work.

I sincerely apologize :/

I understand you situation, being a fellow professional photographer.

You should definitely respect your personal clients' wishes. I would recommend telling them that your photography posted online and used as stock will not harm their reputation or "social image". Maybe ask them why they don't want you to post their pictures online and talk to them about it? Sometimes people are confused or don't fully understand what happens when the pictures are posted online. However, I personally would insist on being able to use them in your portfolio.

I do want to mention though, if you go to a horse show and are walking around taking pictures of the horses in and outside the arena, you are in your full rights to do so (and use the images any way you choose). Of course, if someone notices you taking pictures of them or their horse(s) and asks you to stop, it's respectful to concede to their wishes, or maybe just take their picture discreetly. The only people/person that can demand that you stop taking pictures at a show, is the owner of the property. Until then, it is completely legal and within your rights as a photographer to take pictures. If you are on public property, no one can demand you stop taking pictures (I believe fairgrounds are considered public property).

Also note, that no one (including police) can take your camera and/or delete the images on your camera (unless they have a warrent). Your camera and the images already on it are your property and would be illegal for someone to demand you delete them (or take it and delete them).

I'm not saying to be rude to anyone, I just think you should know you're rights. If someone objects to you at a show, maybe introduce yourself and explain what you're doing. I've never had anyone at a show ask me to stop taking pictures of them or their animal (of course, I'm usually just taking pictures of horses or dogs, not the people). I actually find just the opposite, they sometimes pose for me to take pictures.

Also, if they'r concerned about their children it's probably that they just don't want their kids online. Not wanting their horses I do not particularly understand but I 100% agree with what Sassafras has posted. The pictures become your property! Be polite but understand your rights.
