So I live about 30 minutes out of town now and there are a lot of kangaroos that venture onto the roads and unfortunately, get hit. Danny stopped to move one away from the middle of the road last night when he was coming home at around 9pm, and i'm glad he did. When he got out of the car there was a tiny baby sitting next to the dead adult crying out. He scooped her up and brought her home.

I've got a guy from WIRES coming to collect her on Monday. I have done this a few times before and our vet clinics are quite full and busy right now so he asked if i'd be willing to look after her until Monday. Of course! I have some emergency formula on hand and I am buying some age-specific joey formula tomorrow.

This little girl is approx 5-6 months old. She can stand and move around, her ears are erect and her eyes are wide and bright. She is referred to as a "velvet" as she is covered in fine, velvet-like fur. I weighed her last night and she weighed 1.15kg. She is uninjured, in good health and is bright and alert! We don't think she was outside for very long, maybe an hour or two.

It's a lovely experience but so devastating at the same time. To think that if Danny didn't stop to move the dead adult off the road, he wouldn't have found this baby and goodness knows what might have happened to her. It's also just heartbreaking to picture her sitting there crying out not knowing why her mother isn't getting up. It actually made me cry a little lol.

OH MY GOD

It's difficult to get a good picture of her because she's so clingy lol. I am taking her out onto the grass this afternoon though so i'll see if I can get some then. Hopefully she'll be more interested in the grass than me.

Here are a couple from last night though. She had just had her last feed of the day and was ready for a nap.

She is responding extremely well to the bottle now and actively seeks the teat at feeding time. For a little while there feeding was very slow going because she wasn't interested in the fake teat or the fake milk lol but she's all over it now. Cuts feeding down to 15 minutes!

I'm going to be so sad when the guy comes to get her tomorrow :'(

You know all that time Australians spend convincing other countries that kangaroos aren't in all y'alls backyards... xD

It's such a heartbreaking scenario. I'm glad I wasn't there to see it though because it would have broke me lol.

The guy called me this afternoon and said he can't get here until Wednesday (he's about 2 hours away) and that I can take her to a vet if I don't want to care for her any longer. Pfftt, as if!
I told him how well she's doing and how attached she's becoming to me, despite my best efforts to distance myself. She seeks me out when she wakes up and can't see or hear me near her, even when she's not hungry. I put her right back into her pouch and she's settled for a while but then she's up at looking for me again. She's getting to the age where she has her head out of the pouch most of the time so it would be pretty scary for her to poke her head out and realize she's all alone. That's when she starts crying out.

I did the RICC (rescue and immediate care course) a couple years ago so I am actually allowed to care for her, which is great.

I didn't get any photos today, I wasn't able to get her outside. It's been a super busy day and there are just not enough hours in the day!!

Also i've named her lol.. Well danny kind of did. We've been calling her "Roo", I know, SO ORIGINAL AND CREATIVE! But i've decided to give it SOME uniqueness so her name is Roux :P

Changed her name lmao, I wasn't feeling roux/roo, so now it's ruby. It fits her pretty well!

The guy was supposed to come this afternoon but he won't be here until tomorrow morning now. I'm at the point where if he calls me tomorrow and says he can't get here until friday i'll try to negotiate keeping her in my care. She's getting too attached and settled here to be ripped away and put somewhere entirely new again. I've got her eating extremely well and putting on weight. She is also learning her way around the living room because she comes out of her pouch for short periods to hop around a bit and then goes back in. She's getting very curious and adventurous and i'm scared that if she's uprooted again she may regress.

I can't imagine many people would be qalified to take care of a baby kanagroo, let alone happen to stumble upon one needing care!
