My Cockatiels Odie and Luna finally gave me some babies! Luna laid 3 eggs, two of which hatched. The babies are a week old tomorrow (Saturday)!

Here are some photos! The photo with the yellow fuzz is from today, and the white fuzz was taken yesterday.




They are suuuuper ugly, but they will get cuter in approximately 3-4 weeks time lol.

I weighed them today, and the white fuzz baby isn't gaining enough weight, and each time i've checked them, his/her crop has been empty. Healthy weight for their age is 6-12 grams, and while yellow fuzz weighs in at a healthy 10 grams, poor white fuzz only weighs 5, so he/she will be pulled tomorrow and hand fed.

White fuzz didn't make it through the night :( And Odie & Luna are rejecting yellow fuzz too now so i've had to pull him (gonna say 'him' until I know for sure lol).
I went out this morning and bought a formula, a box, a bunch of bedding materials, a heat mat and a digital thermometer. I'm all set lol.

aww, I'm so sorry white fuzz didn't make it :'( Here's hoping yellow fuzz does!! :)

I'm not surprised because he/she was so little compared to yellow fuzz, but i'm sure yellow fuzz will be just fine. He's strong and growing well, so he should be fine! I'm about to feed him for the first time. I don't usually pull chicks until they're 14 days old and I've never hand fed one this young so i'm a tad bit nervous lol!

He's doing really well! And we've both figured out a rhythm at feeding times now so it's a lot easier haha. I think he'll be fine :D

Yay for yellow fuzz! I love the top picture of him squawking :3 They really do look so bizarre when they're this young, but it is rather endearing :p

so i take it Yellow Fuzz is his name then, yes?!!!

He doesn't have a proper name yet, i'm going to wait until I can see what colour he's going to be first haha.

At this age (9 days) he should be on 5 feedings a day, but he is a little behind development wise due to Odie & Luna not feeding him enough when he was in the nest. So i'm going to be feeding him every 3 hours between 6am and 12am. That's going to be fun lol.

Yeah! I mean it only takes a few minutes to feed him, it takes longer to make the formula than it does to actually give it to him LOL. I COULD teach danny & andy to do it but i'm a little possessive :P It's SO easy to overfeed baby birds and overfeeding can lead to a world of trouble so i'd rather just do it myself and know that he's getting the correct amount lol. The best thing is his crop is emptying within an adequate time frame, which means the risk of him getting some sort of crop infection is lessened a great deal and is one less thing to worry about. Baby birds can develop sour/slow crop fairly quickly (food doesn't digest and just sits in the bottom of the crop, causing an infection) and it's one thing i'm constantly checking for but it hasn't happened so far, so i'm stoked about that lol.

His tiny eyes are starting to open. They should be fully open by tomorrow, if they're not he'll need some help. I also started using coconut water in his formula as it's better for hydration. I had been adding more water than usual to his formula which is great for hydration but not so good for nutrition, so now I can thicken his food more so he'll get enough nutrition as well as enough water.

Phewwwww. The next 2-3 weeks is going to be the toughest. Once he starts to feather it will get easier.
